Happy Old Year!
Since I don't have a clue about what will be, I like to celebrate what has been. Thank you God for all the blessings of this past year, great and small. Thank you for the grace that got me through the hard times. Thank you for forgiving me for all the mistakes I made. Thank you for helping my family and friends, for your healing presence when we needed it most. Thank you for being alive and at work in the world. For watching over the poor. For saving lives. For the chance for peace. Thank you for a year of love past and a year of hope to come. May the good follow me forward and the bad fall far behind. Thank you.

Going into the hospital?

Due to privacy laws, churches are no longer routinely informed if you or a loved one is admitted to the hospital.  Please be sure you let us know when and where you will be a patient so we can be in touch with you and include you in our prayers and healing ministry. Don't assume the Vicar knows - he would much rather hear from several people than from no one!

From the Vicar...

Introducing "Come and See"

In the Gospel according to John, we hear an invitation repeated several times: "Come and see." Sometimes the invitation comes from Jesus. At other times it comes from Jesus' disciples. But always it is an invitation to simply come and see what it's like to be in the presence of Jesus.

Based on this profoundly important, potentially life-transforming Gospel invitation, the Diocese of New Hampshire has created Come and See: A Membership Growth Campaign for the churches of our diocese. This February, our two churches will be participating in that campaign.

This Sunday at Trinity Church, and January 26th at Christ Church, I will be preaching an interactive sermon introducing "Come and See" and starting us on the prayerful journey toward identifying folks who we might invite to "come and see" our two congregations. I'll also outline some of the steps we'll be taking to actually issue those invitations and follow up on them.

Over the weeks between now and mid-February, we will be studying various passages of scripture to discover what we can learn about extending the invitation to "Come and See." At Annual Meeting in each of our churches, you will be invited to make a commitment to the spiritual discipline of extending hospitality to some person or persons you think would benefit from what we have to offer.

Then, on February 16 & 23 and March 2, we'll have our three "Come and See" Sundays. We will extend the hospitality of Christ by inviting our friends to one or more of these Sundays. It is our prayer that they will experience the presence of Christ as they worship and have fellowship with the Body of Christ we know as Christ and Trinity Churches.

I know for us Episcopalians that is scary territory. But, to make it a bit less scary, we'll have some back-up, some support. We'll be doing a ton of publicity in the local papers, with posters in store windows and laundromats and what have you. And a "saturation mailing" of post cards is being prepared to share our message with every household in Portsmouth and Hampton. The key, however, as you will see in the weeks to come, is not the media we use, but the personal invitations we make, and how we make them. Join me on the journey as we learn how - and overcome the obstacles that keep us from asking folks to "come and see" our churches.

Christ Church to celebrate baptism this Sunday

According to church records, the last baptism at Christ Church was when Elizabeth and Grace Tremblay were baptized three years ago. We are delighted to welcome Kayla Rae Armstrong, daughter of Lisa and Ken Armstrong, to Christ's Body, the Church, through Holy Baptism this Sunday, Jan. 12 at Christ Church's 10:30 service. Come on out and support her as she begins her journey in Christ.

Offering envelopes

This year, as a cost-saving measure, we are only preparing packets of offering envelopes for those who requested them on their stewardship pledge form in November. If you did not request envelopes, but would like a set, please speak with Nita in the Shared Ministry office at 926-5688 and specify whether you want weekly, monthly, or quarterly envelopes. Those who requested envelopes at Christ Church will find them in their mailboxes. Those at Trinity who requested them will find them on the table in the Narthex.

First Death Penalty Repeal Bill Hearing

The repeal campaign is heating up! It's all hands on deck to send the message to our legislators, loudly and clearly, that New Hampshire is ready to take this historic step to become the 19th state to repeal the death penalty.

Please join us for the first hearing in the NH House on HB 1170, the bill to repeal the death penalty in New Hampshire, on January 16, 2014 at 1:00 PM in the Legislative Office Building (room to be determined) at 33 N. State St in Concord. The more people we can get in the room to show support, the better our chances for success.

Among those testifying will be Sister Helen Prejean, longtime repeal activist and author of Dead Man Walking.

While you're there, please plan to drop in on your Senator and let your voice be heard on this issue.

We'll send out more details soon. In the meantime, if you have any questions or need more information, please call (603) 230-2335 or email  info@nodeathpenaltynh.org.  We look forward to seeing you there!
