Open the windows of grace. Don't wait, shut up in a closed room, hunched over the same old plans, breathing in the airless atmosphere of failure, praying for rescue, expecting only more of the same. Open the windows of grace. Let a fresh wind flood your room, let it scatter the paper plans on the floor, stir up the dust, wave the curtains like flags of victory, give you a new air to breathe. Open the windows of your soul to receive the grace of God, blessings like breeze, life new like morning air.

Note from the Vicar...
Today's lead column is reprinted from an old edition of The Pastoral Staff (since renamed Abundant Times), the diocesan newspaper of the Diocese of Western Massachusetts. With the arrival of fall and the coming of several events to which we hope to draw newcomers, the reminders in this column are worth sharing.
"I am a newcomer. Won't you please...?"
Today is my first Sunday attending your church. I'm new here - and a bit nervous about walking in your church doors for the first time - but you can do some things that will help me feel more at home. For instance:
- Smile at me as I walk in the door. You are my first impression of the church. If, when I walk in your building, you make a good first impression, it will probably stay with me a long time.
- Help me find my place in the service. Trust me - I won't find it an intrusion. In fact, I will remember your kindness.
- Speak to me during coffee hour. I know you want to see your friends or perhaps settle that piece of committee business. But I may find it hard to believe that you truly care for each other if all I see is evidence that you ignore the strangers in your midst.
- Tell me good things about your church and your priest. I want to believe I have come to a place where people love each other and where they believe that they are doing something exciting and important for God.
- Notice me - even if I am not a "family." I don't want to feel invisible just because I am single or a teenager or an older person.
- Invite me to do something - but don't rush me into making a commitment I'm not ready for yet. A "first Sunday" is not the time to shove a pledge card in my hand or invite me to join the choir, or teach Sunday School. Instead, ask if I can help with an upcoming one-day event like a church fair or dinner. As I get to know people, I'll eventually be available for fuller commitments.
If you can find it in your heart to do these things for me, I will come back. I will worship with you, join your choir, teach in your Sunday School, get involved. I will find my own life immeasurably enriched as a result.
- The Rev. Donald Chamberlain
We're looking for some help with our new Saturday service
As announced over the past few weeks, Trinity Church will be hosting a weekly Saturday evening service starting Sept. 14 at 5 p.m.
This simple, quiet service provides some opportunities for lay participation. If you can help in any of the ways outlined below, please be in touch with Fr. Chip:
- A Lector for the scripture passages each week (they're the same as Sunday's readings the next day).
- An Intercessor to lead the Prayers of the People.
- One or two Greeters to welcome worshipers and hand out programs.
- Ideally, it would also be nice to have a Eucharistic Minister to assist with the cup.
Fr. Chip would be more than happy to train new persons from among those who plan to attend these services to serve in these various roles. Any new Eucharistic Ministers would need to be licensed by the diocese, but the process for becoming licensed is not difficult.
Many thanks - and do come join us for the services as they get underway.
The 2013 Evangelism Institute
September 21, 2013; 10:00 am - 3:00 pm
Lake Opechee Conference Center
62 Doris Ray Court, Laconia, NH
There's a new buzz to the Evangelism Institute! Discussion leaders will be folks who share their best practices...and listen to you! You will hear working ideas from congregations around our diocese. Whether you come from a small church struggling to fill the pews, or a large one seeking to broaden your reach...you will gain valuable insights.
Register for free at http://evangelism.nhepiscopal.org or speak with Fr. Chip no later than this Sunday, Sept. 1.
Discussion Topics
- World Café on the experience of being made welcome.
- Three churches (small, medium and large) tell about and take questions on their Come and See programs.
- A panel of lay leaders taking questions on their church welcomes newcomers.
- All are welcome, especially vestry members, ushers, welcomers and stewardship leaders.
Directory photography make-up dates
As announced earlier in this space, the Bishop's Committee endorsed our going forward with a locally-produced, non-commercial pictorial directory this fall.
Our new directory will only be valuable if it is complete. Accordingly, our goal is 100% participation. If you have not yet been photographed for our directory, here are our make-up dates:
- Christ Church: make-up date, Sept. 15
- Trinity Church: make-up date, Sept. 22
Members of either church may be photographed in either location.
