Spring Cleaning
"Time for some Spring cleaning. I take up the authority God has given me to cast out the things that clutter my spiritual home, I take hold of prayer like a great broom, and I start to sweep clean the corners of my soul. Out with the small jealousies and petty angers, out with self serving pity or righteousness, out with resignation and avoidance, out with excuses and emptiness. Open go the windows to the Spirit as the fresh wind of faith fills the house. Let the dust of the past fly, let the sunlight of hope beckon the new season of my bright tomorrow!"
The Rt. Rev. Steven Charleston, Choctaw

From the Vicar...
Let us love one another and show the world a different way
It has been an extraordinarily difficult couple of weeks in our country. It began with the bombing at the Boston Marathon on May 15th, which led to three deaths and, now we hear, some 264 injuries. Still reeling from the news of that incident, we learned of the terrible explosion in West, Texas, where 14 bodies have been recovered and 60 people are still listed as missing. That was followed by the that Friday's play-by-play of the death of one and arrest of the other of the brothers accused of planting the bombs in Boston.
It seems as though the presence of violence is multiplying in our world, and as horrifying as this past month has been, the frightening reality is that the United States is a relatively peaceful country, compared with other countries where these sorts of violent incidents seem almost commonplace. Witness Iraq, where sectarian violence kills dozens every single day, it seems.
For many of us, the most difficult-to-understand aspect of these incidents is that someone willfully would choose to make them happen. When those bombs were put in place at the Boston Marathon, the bombers knew that it would be possible for an 8-year-old boy to lose his life; that it would be possible for scores of passers-by to suffer life-changing injuries. I don't understand it - and I'm sure you don't either. It's seemingly beyond comprehension that there are those in our world who are willing to take actions that cause injury, death, and untold suffering to others.
In an increasingly violent world, Christ calls us to a life that is a radically different way of living. We are called by the Gospel to do as Jesus has done. Among the implications are these:
- We are not to place our needs above those of our neighbors (be they near or far).
- We are to love with the same sacrificial love that Jesus has for us.
- We are to live in such a way that people notice our extraordinary love.
- We are to love in ways that draw outsiders in - so that by our love, to quote last week's Gospel, "everyone will know that you are my disciples..."
Sadly, we live in a world where people are free to act with evil intent, and lamentably, it seems that there will always be some who choose to do so. However, in the face of this, Christians do not hide behind the safety of thick walls and locked doors. Instead, we live defiantly in this world with a spirit of love. We continue to seek the good of our neighbor; we continue to reach out in love to the unlovable; and in doing so we make Christ known. Love is the gift that has been given to us, and love is the gift that we share. Loved by God, let us love one another, and show the world a different way.

Ascension Day Eucharist
Trinity Church, Hampton Thursday, May 9 at 7 p.m.
Ascension Day stands alongside Christmas, Easter and Pentecost as one of the four "Major Feasts of Our Lord." Following the chronology outlined in the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles, it commemorates our Lord's Ascension to the Father on the fortieth day after the Resurrection.
We will offer a joint celebration of the Holy Eucharist in honor of this occasion on Thursday, May 9. The 7:00 p.m. service will be held at Trinity Church.
As with Ash Wednesday and the Holy Week Triduum, it is the Church's expectation that all baptized Christians will make the effort to be in attendance. I encourage you to come - you will find it an uplifting (sorry for the pun, it's not entirely unintentional...) experience.
- Fr. Chip
Let's wear red for Pentecost!
On the Day of Pentecost, Sunday, May 19, we will continue our custom of wearing red as a small sign that the Holy Spirit lives within each of us. Our services in both churches that day will feature some powerful Pentecost hymns - including some from more contemporary sources - and a multi-lingual reading of the Pentecost Gospel. (Do you know another language? Let me know so you can help out with this!) I'll be adorned in bright red vestments, the altar will be decked in red as well - why don't we all wear red to make the scene a "sea" of Pentecost color!
- Fr. Chip
