From Our Bishop

Of God, Gambling, and Guns

As Christians we are called upon to pray for a just and peaceful ordering of our society.  I would like to share with you two invitations for you to consider how we might live out our Baptismal Vow to "seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself" and "to strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being."

The first invitation comes to us from Mr. Bob Kay, the Vice Director of the New Hampshire Council of Churches, of which the Diocese of New Hampshire is a member.  It urges action on some upcoming legislation that would allow Casino Gambling in our beloved state. Religious traditions stress the value of freedom from behaviors that lessen human dignity.  No one can reasonably argue with the fact that gambling has destroyed people's lives through addiction. Individuals and families have been ruined.  The electronic "near win" class of games are deliberately engineered to increase the pernicious addictive power of gambling.  Addiction, in what ever form, is the antithesis of freedom. It makes little sense that a state whose slogan is to "live free or die" would pin its financial hopes on an activity that imperils its citizens, erodes community, and exacts an incalculable social and spiritual toll.

The second invitation I would like to share is written by a new friend and brother of mine in the House of Bishops.  The Rt. Rev. Ed Konieczny is a former police officer and has a powerful story to tell about his own relationship to guns.  I invite you to read his short testimony as a compelling example of how we can be civil and humble in our public discourse about matters that tend to polarize and divide us even as we strive to fulfill our baptismal covenant.

Bishop Rob Hirschfeld

About Casinos in New Hampshire

From Bob Kay, Vice President, New Hampshire Council of Churches:

A hearing before the House combined Finance & Ways and Means committees for the Casino bill (SB-152) has been set for next Tuesday, April 16 beginning at 10:00 AM in Representatives Hall (State House).  The New Hampshire Council of Churches and its ten member denominations (including the Episcopal Diocese of NH) has for years advocated for the prohibition of expanded gambling in New Hampshire, especially in the form of a Casino loaded with video slot machines which are known to be addictive and destructive to vulnerable families and individuals.  I urge all to take the following actions:

About Guns

The Rt. Rev. Edward J. Konieczny is bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Oklahoma. He was previously a police officer in Southern California.

By Edward J. Konieczny, Special to CNN's Belief Blog

(CNN) - Both sides of the gun control debate think I'm on their side. I am the bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Oklahoma, a believer in Jesus Christ and for more than 18 years before entering seminary, I was a police officer.

While I try to preach God's love and mercy, I also have a concealed carry permit and sometimes take my gun on long drives through the isolated areas of my diocese.

I live with the knowledge that I share responsibility for the taking of a human life in the line of duty and that a good friend on the force was shot and killed after we'd swapped shifts. And I wouldn't be writing this article if the rifle that was pointed at my head one night by a man in the grip of a mental illness hadn't failed to fire.

Until very recently, I was adamantly opposed to any expansion of gun control. But as I have reflected on the current debate - and the emotionally charged and morally complex gun-related moments in my past - I find myself struggling and evolving in my understanding of guns in our society. I think it is time for an honest conversation about the assumptions on which both sides in the gun debate base their arguments. It's time for both sides to acknowledge that neither offers a complete solution to the problems of violence in our society.

In 1979, one of my best friends, a fellow police officer named Don, swapped shifts with me so I could play in a police softball tournament. During that shift, Don was escorting a man from a bar when the man pulled a semiautomatic weapon from his coat and shot Don in the chest. Don died at the scene.

The man who shot Don was a convicted felon, recently released from prison. He should not have been able to buy a gun, but he had bought the one he used and several others from a licensed dealer.

From the Vicar...

A tentative "next step" in sharing our ministry

Back in February, when the Bishop's Committees met in retreat, one of the "future possibilities" we explored was the establishment of a "Shared Ministry Office" rather than having two separate offices with their attendant duplicate costs and capabilities.

At the time, we never imagined this would happen anytime soon. We had highly capable people on staff in both of our locations and things were running smoothly at both ends. With Tiffany Lanoue's departure from Christ Church's office, however, the Wardens and I began revisiting this possibility - and in consultation with Trinity's secretary, Nita Niemczyk, we decided to give it a test run.

Beginning this week, Nita will be our secretary both for Christ and Trinity - and the church office at Hobbs House will be billed as the "Shared Ministry Office" for our two churches. She will produce the bulletins and other correspondence for both churches - but, to maintain a physical presence at Christ Church, I will still hold office hours Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00-12:00 at our Portsmouth office.

This is far from "final." We have set this up initially as a 60-day "evaluation period." In June, we'll sit down together and evaluate how (and whether) it is working and make recommendations as to whether we continue, modify, or abandon the shared office model.

This is not only a "test run" for Nita and me - it will require your input and help as well. Some of the things we'd been doing in the Christ Church office (such as the Christ Church ministry schedules) will occur differently under this model. You will also notice that when Nita answers the phone, she will reference both churches in her greeting. (We will use "call forwarding" to assure that calls placed to the Christ Church number are answered in the shared office.)

I've outlined below a few of the salient details. For now, I ask your patience, and at least a fair shot at giving this a chance to work. It holds the potential for saving both churches a great deal of money - something we really need to consider with both churches operating at a deficit.

Fr. Chip

Shared Ministry Office Test Period

April 15 - June 14, 2013

  1. We will bill the office in Hobbs House as the "Shared Ministry Office" so it's clearly "owned" by the two churches, not just Trinity. The initial "test period" will run from April 15 - June 14, after which we will evaluate whether or not this arrangement is workable and can continue.
  2. We will set up call forwarding so if the Christ Church phone rings, it can be answered in the shared office. Effective April 15, Nita will answer, "Good (morning/afternoon), Trinity and Christ Churches."
  3. Pending Bishop's Committee approval, Christ Church will pay for 5 hours per week of Nita's time and cost-share office supplies, etc., we share in common.
  4. Should this arrangement be continued beyond 60 days, we will re-evaluate the best ways of handling such matters as copier maintenance contracts, etc., to provide the most efficient use and cost savings to both churches.
  5. Fr. Chip will continue to have Christ Church office hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00-12:00.
  6. All are asked to note an earlier Christ Church bulletin deadline due to the new production schedule: by the close of business Tuesday.

EfM: Education for Ministry (Lay Ministry)
Are you wondering what EfM is? Have you considered participating in an Education for Ministry (EfM) group?  Here's some information that might help answer your questions.

EfM,   is a four-year course of study prepared by the University of the South in Sewanee to assist and prepare lay people, acting in a small group community of faith, to understand and develop their personal ministries in the Church and in the world. The weekly sessions are 3 hours long and continue for 36 weeks out of each year, although you only need commit for one year at a time. Participants explore information from weekly reading assignments and participate in theological reflections designed to help them understand the action of God in their lives. There is a materials fee, but financial assistance is available. A thorough description of the program may be found at

Want to know more? Want to finish the program you once started? On Tuesday evening, April 30 at 6:30, Bonnie Chappell, the NH EfM coordinator, will be at the regular class session at Christ Church, Exeter  (where Betty Lane attends EfM) to discuss the new curriculum and answer any questions.   All are invited who want to know more about the program.  We'd love to see you there.

Can't attend but would like to hear more about it? Contact either Betty or Jean Wadman.

'Goodsearch' can help us raise money for our ministry

Help raise money for Christ Church Portsmouth or Trinity Church Hampton by using  Goodsearch whenever you search the internet, shop online, or dine at select local restaurants.

It's easy!

First go to  www.goodshop.com. At the home page, click on "Choose a Cause." This will take you to a screen titled: "Who do you want to help?" Type in the name of your cause - "Christ Episcopal Church - Portsmouth" or "Trinity Church - Hampton." Then create a user profile that will allow you to keep track of your individual amount raised. Goodsearch does the rest. They will send out checks for the combined amount earned by all of our supporters through Goodsearch, Goodshop and Gooddining during their fiscal year of October 1st through September 30th.

There are also quick-to-install add-ons that make your use of Goodshop easy: The GoodShop To-Go Button, GoodApp Toolbar and Goodsearch Plug-in all install in less than 30 seconds and help you to earn donations for your favorite cause when you shop and search even when you don't visit Goodsearch first.

From our perspective, it's "free" money - the more we search, shop, and dine, the more money we can earn for our respective churches. If you have any questions or need help getting started, please feel free to contact Kris Ebbeson at  kebbeson@metrocast.netor 603-319-4685.
