From the Vicar...
From Lent's midpoint...to Holy Week and Easter
We are at Lent's midpoint as I write this, and Palm Sunday is a little more than two weeks away. Holy Week, the heart of the Church's Year and the annual jewel of its life of liturgy, is almost upon us. What I want to emphasize as this powerful and moving time approaches, is that all Holy Week liturgies are in fact Easter liturgies. The sovereign principle which runs through each one is that on the third day God raised Jesus from the tomb; that Christ is risen. Even in the depths of the Solemn Liturgy of Good Friday, the Church is showing how profound our Lord's victory is, as he shows solidarity with us even in the worst throes of abandonment and death. Holy Week is the public presentation, in liturgy, through music and preaching, of those mighty acts whereby God in Christ has reconciled the world to God's self.
It has been said that attending the Easter liturgy without attending the Holy Week services is like watching the happy ending of a movie without seeing the middle - you only rob yourself of joy. I pray that each of you will allow our Holy Week services to wash over you, that your Easter joy may be all that much fuller when it breaks upon you.
- Fr. Chip
Palm Sunday 8:45 a.m. at Trinity; 10:30 a.m. at Christ Church
This Sunday before Easter is the last Sunday in Lent. The day commemorates Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem with a blessing of palms and a procession in which the whole congregation carries palms. The day is also marked by reading the story of Jesus' Passion according to Luke.
Maundy Thursday 7:00 p.m. joint worship at Christ Church
This day is a time for remembering the Last Supper. The name comes from the Latin word maundatum for "commandment" as Jesus said, "I give you a new commandment; that you love one another." At the conclusion of this 7:00 p.m. service, the altar is stripped and the reserved sacrament is processed to the altar of repose, where it remains until the Great Vigil of Easter.
Good Friday 7:00 p.m. joint worship at Trinity Church
The Friday in Holy Week is a time for remembering Jesus' death. The evening service, at 7:00 p.m., recounts John's version of the Passion and includes the praying of the Solemn Collects of Good Friday and the Veneration of the Cross.
The Great Vigil of Easter
7:30 p.m. joint worship at Christ Church. This service is appropriate from after sunset on Holy Saturday, and thus will occur this year at 7:30 p.m. This service begins in darkness, when a new fire is lit, from which the Paschal (Easter) candle is lighted. It signifies the light of Christ coming into the world anew at the resurrection. A series of scripture readings recount the history of our salvation. The renewal of baptismal vows follows. The service closes with the first Eucharist of Easter.
The sacrament of reconciliation
The Sacrament of Reconciliation (Book of Common Prayer, pp.446ff) is a rarely-used, yet always-available opportunity to seek spiritual refreshment in troubling times. If your conscience troubles you and the confession of sins in the common liturgy has not proved sufficient to bring comfort, you might want to consider meeting with me to share in this confidential sacrament of solace and spiritual strengthening. I will be available throughout the Lenten season, whenever it might be convenient to meet with you. Simply give me a call and I would be most happy to prepare you for this rite, and then walk with you through it.

Our Lenten Program...
Wednesday, March 13 at Trinity: "Eliminating the Obstacles"
Thursday, March 14 at Christ Church: "Imagining Our Future"
Thursday, March 21 at Christ Church: "Eliminating the Obstacles"
7:00 p.m. - Preceded by Soup and Bread Supper at 6:00 and Worship at 6:40
This coming week, our Lenten series, "Finding Our Purpose: Toward a More Deeply Shared Ministry," continues. The ultimate goal of our conversations is to develop the framework of a covenant between our two churches. While the sessions of this program do build on one another, each is self-contained so that no one need feel "left out" if they cannot commit to the full series.
The series will wrap up on Saturday March 23, 9-11:45 am, at a joint gathering at St Georges Church in York Harbor, Maine as we look toward a new Shared Ministry Covenant. More details to follow.
Our Lenten worship
Sunday services at both Christ Church and Trinity will, throughout the season of Lent, strike a simpler, more penitential tone than those normally offered through the rest of the year. By changing the liturgy in different seasons of the Church Year, our worship will be deepened as we experience different windows that are opened to God by our service. Come! Share the experience!
