Board of Supervisors adopts fiscal 2015 spending plan
The Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors adopted a fiscal 2015 county spending plan at its regular meeting April 23. Board members voted unanimously to approve the budget, which includes a general fund of nearly $766 million. Board members also voted 3-2 in favor of a 1 cent increase to the real estate tax rate to fund a reduction in the pupil-to-teacher ratio in county schools while providing some ongoing maintenance funds for school facilities. Challenge yourself with something new!

Now that the warmer weather has arrived, it's time to break out of your winter doldrums and try something new! From archery to cooking programs to art exhibitions, there's something to explore in all four corners of the county this spring and summer.

 

If you've ever watched the summer Olympics and despaired that you missed your chance to try an Olympic sport, why not give archery a go? On Tuesday, July 15, 5:30-7:30, adults aged 18 and older will get an introduction to archery at the range in Rockwood Park. The fee is $20, and all equipment will be provided. Call 748-1623 and mention course 28598 to register.

 

Or if you'd like more of a thrill, perhaps whitewater kayaking is what you need. Classes are offered at the Dutch Gap Conservation Area all summer. For $140, spend a weekend learning how to kayak some of the wonderful waters that surround Chesterfield County. Perhaps you're the quiet type instead. Explore one of the county's many libraries. From the Morning Break Coffee Series to Meet You at the Movies or any of the kids' story programs, the library offers a wide range of programs and events to capture anyone's attention.

 

So whether you're thinking of entering the new Mudstock 5K mud run at Henricus on June 28 or getting spooked at the paranormal tour offered at Magnolia Grange on July 12, there's something for everyone this summer. Be sure to visit chesterfield.gov to see what's going on in your community.

The Chesterfield County office of Virginia Cooperative Extension  is offering its popular spring programs designed to get your lawn and garden in tiptop shape for spring. Business News

In Economic Development news, two major companies recently expanded into Chesterfield County. In March, the Capital One Financial Corp. data center  at Meadowville Technology Park held its grand opening. The center is expected to bring more than 100 new technology and IT jobs to Central Virginia. Evonik Industries  announced plans in February to invest $15 million to relocate and expand its business and innovation center to Chesterfield County. It is expected to create 50 high-skill jobs in the county, while maintaining its current Hopewell manufacturing facility.

 

Kroger recently announced plans to build a 113,500-square-foot Kroger Marketplace on 22 acres off Iron Bridge Road, between Courtyard and Greenyard roads. The store will have fuel pumps and an additional 7,800 square feet in adjacent commercial space.
