'Violence Against Women' In The Law: A Global Analysis

In this session, Jill and David offer some results from their forthcoming (Fall 2014) book. Based on an original dataset, the book examines the strength of domestic laws addressing four types of violence against women -- rape, marital rape, domestic violence, and sexual harassment -- in 196 countries from 2007 to 2010. The book includes descriptions of the strength of domestic legal protections associated with violence against women, and analyses of why these laws exist in some places and not others, and why they are stronger / weaker in places where they do exist. Hypotheses relating to whether international law drives the enactment of domestic legal protections are tested, as well. Finally, the book examines the sequence of enactment of such legal protections, how the presence/strength of these legal protections is related to economic, political, and social institutions, and how trans-national society affects the presence/strength of these laws.
