Literature Review:

1) Helmets are of no benefit over time for non traumatic plagiocephaly of infants (misshapen skull). In the British Medical Journal, 84 infants with positional skull deformities underwent helmet correction versus a time control group. At the 2 year mark, evaluations noted no difference between the two groups. The study was funded by the Netherlands Organization for Health Research and Development making it likely to be unbiased. Most previous studies were funded by groups aligned with the helmet companies. 

I find that the best therapy for most positional deformities is early recognition of muscular torticolis and physical therapy/chiropractic care. 

2) Sleep deprivation and obesity are now a real problem. Dr. Van Cauter and her colleagues have found this link in multiple studies. In one specific study she found that sleep modulates neurohormonal function. The hormones affected are insulin and leptin which govern fat deposition and hunger signals. Children who are moderately sleep deprived have alterations in glucose metabolism which in turn contributes to obesity and eventually diabetes. A piece of the obesity puzzle. 

3) More on the imprinted genes and puberty. In a study from the Journal Nature, Dr. Ong looked at pubertal timing and the parental genes that are imprinted. While nutrition and lifestyle do have an effect on pubertal onset, it turns out that inherited and imprinted parental genes have a much greater effect on their offspring after they are born. If you inherit your mother's imprinted gene for puberty, you may enter puberty much earlier than if you inherit your fathers and visa versa. 

The big question that this raises is the 18 month shift toward earlier puberty over the last 30 years a function of these inherited imprinted genes or a consequence of epigenetic chemical shifts that are occurring with estrogen analogues like BPA? I think the latter is the cause since human genes do not change that quickly. It takes generations to alter a populations DNA for a class effect such as this whereas in epigenetic shifts can occur rapidly.

Therapeutic Foods
 
1) Sauerkraut - a staple food from the pre-refrigeration days. Cabbage is fermented and the diverse bacteria that reside in the cabbage are beneficial as they produce short chain fatty acids that our gut cells thrive on. 
 
2) Liver - called a "lost superfood" by the teachers of the Institute for Functional Medicine. It is loaded with vitamins ADEK, Iron, B vitamins and various antioxidants. It can be ingested as a classic southern dish like liver and onions or liver powder in a smoothie. I prefer the second. I think that all liver should come from healthy farm raised animals since it is the major filter of the blood's toxins. 

3) Bone broth/soup/gelatin - loaded with amino acids that are the building blocks of proteins, these soups are a powerful addition to a gut healing diet. It has many easily absorbed minerals and bone enhancing materials. 

4) Fermented GMO free organic soy - a staple of asian cooking that is loaded with healthy complete* proteins and fiber. An excellent source of polyphenols, folic acid, magnesium and calcium. 

5) Water - preferably filtered. You are 70% water. No better way to detoxify your system than to drink lots of water and then sweat through exercise. 

Increase these foods in your diet and aim for longevity. 


* A complete protein is one that contains all of the amino acids that our body cannot synthesize.

Recipe of the Week

Gelatin/Homemade jello

 

Ingredietns:

 

1 TBSP Gelatin

1/4 Cup boiling water

1 1/4 Cup organic grape juice or juice of choice

 

 

Directions:

 

Mix all three ingredients together and then leave in the refrigerator for 3 hours.

 

Gelatin is loaded with glycine and other gut healing properties.
