Apathetic people sit back and wait for things to get better before they move. Radical people make things get better, by how they move.

The need for motivation is constant for many people. Complacency and comfort rule people's minds. What is the secret to motivation? The obvious answer is that it is different for every individual and finding what makes them tick is the key. Personalized care.

I think of movies like Dead Poets Society speak to this issue. The theme powerfully states "carpe diem" or "seize the day". No matter your lot in life, everyday has the opportunity for greatness. Greatness of your choosing. Seizing the opportunity is the choice one needs to make.

I recently cared for a young lady with a tough past and a desire to hurt

herself. I found that the only discussion that resonated with her was truth and desire. We discussed the fact that you cannot change the past. You have to accept it for what it is and decide on a new path where possible. The future is the major point of discussion. She could seize this bad moment as a motivator against a continued negative future. She felt heard and at least momentarily was able to smile and see a light of hope.

Motivation must come from within, however, it can be stimulated from without by a conscious listener who picks up on the cues of the unmotivated. Listen where you can and offer advice that is motivating for the individual.

So often when I listen to interviews of great Americans, a common theme resonates with me. These Americans were motivated by their parents to seek and learn by themselves. Parents expected exploration. Often they demanded it. These children then realized that their personal growth came from within and they had to depend on themselves. This cannot be overstated. Self motivation is always preferable to external motivational needs. Both are useful but the self style is best.

The GUT Part 7 - Function

Gut bacteria have many functions including playing a role in our neurotransmitter, vitamin and enzyme manufacture. They produce fatty acids and amino acids from the metabolism of non digestible foods. They also affect and produce signaling molecules that provide crosstalk between our immune system, our gut and metabolic systems.

The far reaching effects are notable for the regulation of our stress levels and metabolism. Both of which have been well studied with fecal transplants and biochemical analysis.

It is therefore a reality that we are fundamentally reliant on our microbes to advance our overall health. If we don't nourish them appropriately, then their beneficial functions will be impaired. This can ultimately lead to a breech in the intestinal wall and lead to an inflammatory state where the immune system abnormally reacts to bacteria, food and and chemicals. This inflammation will have far reaching negative effects on us.

Unlike the rest of the human cellular system where nourishment is provided through the blood stream, our intestines are unique in that they are nourished by these foreign bacterial byproducts.

Thinking of the sequence of the gut sections already discussed, there appears to be a divine plan where we are symbiotically linked to bacteria that reside within us and that it should be our goal to learn how to nourish the right bugs (to be determined) while undernourishing pathogens.

E Cigarettes

A new problem that our youth have to face. E cigarettes are being bandied around as an alternative to the toxic conventional cigarettes and as a method of quitting. The thought was that cigarette addicted individuals could use e cigarettes as a way to wean off of nicotine while not being exposed to the harmful chemicals of smoked tobacco.

Unfortunately, that is not happening. E cigarette use appears to be just reducing the volume of conventional cigarettes smoked but not aiding the quit process. Access to them by teens is high and some teens may consider them as a safer alternative to cigarettes. This effect may inadvertently get them hooked on nicotine. Their is little to no good reason to start using e cigarettes.

Be aware of the draw that e cigarettes has on our youth. Educate your children to the dangers of nicotine in all forms including e cigarettes, chewing tobacco and cigarettes.
