FREE THOUGHTS

To give one's life for another is the greatest act of selflessness. Memorial day honors those who were selfless. Take a moment today and think of a person that has given of themselves for you and us.

Share your feelings with a child so that they can begin to understand that freedom is not free. It has a cost that is great.

Sports and energy drinks and risky behavior - does it lead to unhealthy habits?

The stereotype is the child that plays excessive video games and uses the sports or energy drinks to get exactly that, energy to sustain the gaming. Unfortunately, many children of all walks of life are over consuming these unhealthy beverages. They were initially designed for endurance athletes that would lose electrolytes during intense exercise not for the school age child just playing a recreational game or worse yet the sedentary gamer.

As the consumption of soda and fruit juice has decreased in recent years, sports and energy drinks have tripled in consumption. Recent concerns regarding the negative cardiac effects of energy drinks are still being reviewed.

In an article from Journal of Nutrition Education in May 2014, Nicole Larsen et. al. looked at almost 3000 teens and their behavior patterns in relation to energy/sports drink consumption. They found that these teens were more likely to be active in sports, smoke cigarettes, play over 4 hours more of video gaming per week and consume more sugary beverages.

While this is neither earth shattering news or causal in nature, it does point out the associated patterns of behavior that could be a concern to a parent. More activity is the only beneficial association. The other three are all detrimental to health.

There is no benefit to your children when consuming these beverages. If the data is true, be cognizant of signs of other unhealthy associated behaviors.

Summer Bug Bites

This is the time of year where we see lots of patients with tick and other insect bites. This year seems no different.

Being vigilant for signs of infection and also having a prevention first attitude can save you from needing help.

Ideas:

1) Perform tick checks on your children daily after outdoor play. Check behind the ears, nape of the neck, groin, armpit and between the toes. Ticks in general need to be attached for roughly 36 hours to transmit the spirochete that causes Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain Spotted fever. Remove them gently with tweezers by gently pulling and not squeezing. See this link for details.

2) Mosquito and chigger bites can leave a nasty itchy bump or bumps. Kids will often scratch them open and leave a place for infection to occur. We are seeing a lot of MRSA (a resistant bacterial skin bacteria) abscesses from these bites. Prevent them by using insect repellents and long clothing. Also, reduce outdoor time at dawn and dusk when the bugs are most active.

3) If you get an open sore from a bite, rub it with alcohol a few times a day until healed and that will likely prevent an infection.

4) Use topical products with oil of lemon eucalyptus 30% to prevent tick bites. (not for kids under 3 years old)

5) Apply all repellents by hand to avoid inhalation by your child. (same with sunscreens. Aerosolized chemicals are no good period!)

6) Shower after outdoor activity. Especially, if repellents are used.

7) I like creams like Calendula, aloe vera and cortisone for itching. Also, rubbing a moist tea bag on bites can help with itching and swelling. The tannins act like an astringent.

8) Avoid having standing water in your yard. Mosquito haven.

*Pray that you have a lot of bats nearby so that they can ping the mosquitoes with their radar and swoop in for meals.

The GUT Part 3

The ancient immune system. Our bodies have a naive immune system at the moment of our birth. It has yet to encounter a foreign microbe and thus is not smart. As soon as a child enters the world, the gut, lungs and skin are inundated by bacteria that are teaching our immune system right from wrong

The learning part of the immune system is simplistically divided in two groups of immune cells. The T helper cells 1 and 2. These guys proliferate based on microbial exposure throughout life. One group is set to fight and kill viral and bacterial cells while the other is set to kill parasites. An imbalance of early exposure to parasites and normal bacteria has changed the normal pattern of immune system development.

In the early hours of life a child would be exposed to vaginal and breast associated bacteria that humans historically grew up with. They would then set up camp in the neonates intestines and promote a healthy gut ecosystem. As he grew up he would lick everything in sight including dirt and parasites. Many of these bugs would further prime the immune system for normal tolerance of microbes versus harmful invaders.

Fast forward to the child born via c section, fed cow's milk, given antibiotics repeatedly, given antacid for cow's milk reflux and not exposed to dirt in the modern ultra clean environment of his home. The naive immune system is now challenged with a whole new set of microbes that humans have little experience with at this early stage of life. It turns out that they are harmful to certain genetically susceptible people.

The abnormally formed gut ecosystem is now programming the immune system for fighting excessively in one direction or the other and this leads to allergic disease, auto immunity and excessive inflammation. There is no balance between TH1 and TH2 cells. Think of the battle lines in a war where both armies are of equal strength, little conflict occurs. Now, if one side has much greater strength, then they may be apt to attack the weaker side and gain dominance. This is what we see.

Simple shifts in how humans are raising their newborns are having profound effects on the gut microbes and also the immune system leading to a litany of diseases.

The immune system is our best friend and our worst enemy. If we set it up correctly from birth, it will take care of us. If we treat it poorly from birth by over stimulating it with the wrong bugs, it becomes our worst enemy. It actually starts to kill us. Think of the rise in peanut allergy. A previously well tolerated food protein is now a poison for many.

The gut, lung, skin and the immune system work together as one. It is imperative that we start this at birth. Teach this to anyone that is pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant.

(recently I have discussed that some obstetricians are swabbing newborns born by c section with vaginal flora to simulate a vaginal birth. They are priming the immune system in the natural way. I love this simple solution to our overuse of c sections)

Recipe of the Week

Something new that I tried this week.

Ingredients:

Chili - whatever type you have or like to make or try this one by Emeril

1 Head of cabbage

1 Large avocado - cubed

1 Package of cherry tomatoes - halved

Directions:

In a pot with an inch of boiling water, place a head of cabbage with the core cut out face up. Steam until leaves fall off cooked and wilted. Peal them off one by one with a pair of tongs so as to avoid burning yourself with the rising steam. Let them cool a little and then fill each one with a little chili, some avocado and tomato. Eat like an open taco and enjoy.

A great Paleo style dish (albeit with legumes).
