MERS - Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome.
This is not a topic generally thought of for the pediatric world. It is an awareness topic for all world travelers and people who have friends that work or live in the Middle East.
MERS is a viral infection that surfaced in the Saudi Arabia in 2012. The infection presents as a febrile illness with severe cough and eventually shortness of breath leading to respiratory distress and in 31%, death. All 401 known cases are related to infected people from one of six countries in the Arabian Peninsula.
It is highly unlikely that anyone reading this newsletter will contract this illness, however, it is imperative that travelers maintain awareness of the potential risk if they travel to countries known to have index cases.
The first known case in the United States occurred this week. A traveler returning from the Middle East coming through Chicago developed the acute symptoms of MERS. We live in a connected world and containment of most severe infections indefinitely is difficult. This case emphasizes that reality.
"While experts do not yet know exactly how this virus is spread, CDC advises Americans to help protect themselves from respiratory illnesses by washing hands often, avoiding close contact with people who are sick, avoid touching their eyes, nose and/or mouth with unwashed hands, and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces."
This advice is just common sense when exposed to any sick person with a respiratory viral illness.

The GUT Part 1 |
Introduction:
The gut is so important to our future that I am going to cover this topic for the next few weeks to months.
What is it? Simply, a long tube from our mouth to our rectum. The contents of which contain our digestive engine, 70% of our immune defense system, nutrient and energy source and foreign bacterial reservoir. Historically, we believed that the gut was purely for taking food and breaking it down into easily utilized nutrient components that can be taken up into the blood stream. These nutrients then supplied all of our cells with energy and functional chemicals. And we were happy. Now this reality is only a small part of the story. It is still true that the guts main function is nutrient gathering from food. What has changed dramatically is our knowledge of the microscopic world within. This "micro biome" is where all of the cutting edge research is going and the results are staggering in their scope and utility for human health. In the next few weeks we are going to have a crash course on the gut micro biome. In the end I hope that you will come away with new tools to change your familiy's life. |
Bullying 2 |
Resilience is a key in any scenario regarding abuse or fighting. Whether it is bullying or fighting with friends, children do best when they are able to share their feelings, receive empathy and learn to cope with minor scenarios or be removed from a major issue that is damaging. Helpful counselors and parents will teach a child how to handle a transgression and how to be prepared for any future events.
To come to your child's rescue with every childhood verbal trangression is counter productive. The so called helicopter parent is willing to save their child at any cost. The child inadvertently develops a belief that he is not capable of handling his own issues. The real world will be anxiety provoking when their is no parental safety net.
Teach your child that it is up to THEM to succeed. Teach them how to face a bully and move on with their life. Listen to their story. Empathize and step in only when your child is in danger. Explain to them what a bully is: a person that is using physical or verbal strength to gain control over and/or belittle another. Help them see that words are just that, WORDS. Help them see that a peer group that disagrees with bullying is the best way to reduce the behavior.
If bullying persists, then it is imperative that an adult authority steps in to remove or reprimand the bully. Bullying is abuse and should not be tolerated.
Aside:
On the topic of resilience and self worth, College professors and primary school teachers are seeing parents call and fight to fix a child's bad grade. I recently heard of a story where a parent objected to a teacher's exam saying it was too hard because the child failed. When the teacher showed the parent the other grades and that most children passed, the parent was unmoved and defiant for the child. The defiance and disbelief is a message to a child that it is ok to fail. Mommy will fix it. It is not up to me to study harder next time. How will they develop self worth and resilience with rescue boats around every corner.
