156 Newsletters down and how many to come?

At the end of each cycle, I try to reflect on the past while looking to the future.

I am a huge fan of the future. As I have aged, I have found that time offers me the ability to learn new things, correct past mistakes and grow as a husband, father, teacher and healer. What a gift time can be when you look at it from this perspective.

This past year we have developed a better understanding of metabolism and obesity, epigenetics and health, memory and sleep, failure and leading, parenting and being parented, and many great recipes to improve our health collectively.

What does 2014 have in store?

I am steadfast in my belief that the future is all about the mismatch of our genes and our environment. I plan to continue to look to great thinkers like Drs. Lustig, Lieberman, Weil, Bland and countless other brilliant men
and women that allow me to be a better teacher. We need to continue to personalize our lifestyle choices based on our DNA and heritage. The answers to all questions will be in our DNA and how we respond to the environment.

I look forward to more questions from you all on topics of interest. More than 50% of last years topics were requests or forwarded material worth sharing.

Keep sending pictures of interest. The community feel of the main picture is nice. Any great devices or books that you want to share are also welcomed.

SLIT

Well it is finally on its way. The FDA advisory panel, Allergenic Products Committee, has recommended the approval of a pharmaceutical sublingual allergy pill for kids and adults for timothy grass allergy. The name will be Grastek. While at first I am skeptical of this approval, I am hopeful that this will finally open the door for targeted physician based SLIT to be covered by insurance.

If you remember the Pediatrics article from June 2013 that showed the equivalent efficacy of sub cutaneous versus sublingual immune therapy for the treatment of allergies and asthma, you now see that if the FDA starts to approve Big Pharma's therapies then they will have to approve the high quality products that are available already from companies like Allergy Choices.

Where I find this tacit approval troubling is that it took far too long for the FDA to give this type of therapy the nod. It has been known for a long time that sublingual therapy is safer than the shot version and is more cost effective. It has been shown to be as effective and readily available. Parents can do the therapy from home and children do not need to receive mildly painful shots weekly.

We have been using this route of allergy desensitization for allergies for a few years now with great results. The only hangup remains the FDA which in turn allows the insurers not to cover the service.

I highly recommend sub lingual immune therapy for children who suffer from allergies.

Recipe of the Week

Prosciutto Wrapped Scallops by Giada De Laurentiis

Ingredients:

1/4 cup chopped sun-dried tomatoes
2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil leaves
2 tablespoons chopped pitted black olives (about 10 olives)
1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
12 medium scallops
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
12 slices prosciutto
2 cups arugula
1 1/2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

In a food processor, add the tomatoes, basil, olives, and olive oil and process until finely chopped.

Season both sides of the scallops with salt and pepper. Rub each scallop with the tomato mixture. Fold each slice of prosciutto in half lengthwise, then wrap each scallop in 1 slice of prosciutto. Place wrapped scallops in a buttered baking dish, seam side down. Bake until scallop is cooked through, about 15 minutes.

In a medium bowl, toss the arugula with the balsamic vinegar. Season the arugula with salt and pepper. Place the arugula on a serving platter or divide among individual dishes. Top with the scallops and serve immediately.
