Issue: #50
December 2, 2013
Lake Davidson, NC on a cool fall morning.

Volume 3, Letter 50

Sugary drinks are associated with cancer in women. While this is not a surprising statement to many it is still one to be discussed as to why it is true.

In a new study this year in the Journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & PreventionMaki Inoue-Choi
and her colleagues found an association between sugary beverages and endometrial cancer when they looked at 23,000 women and their diets over a 14 year period. They also found an
association with sugar laden foods.

Many hormonal cancers are known to be associated with obesity and type II diabetes mellitus. Therefore, it is only logical that this study would bear this answer out.

The imperative issue here is that our youth are consuming huge volumes of sugar in all of its forms. See graph below. If this study is true, and I believe that it is, we are in for an epidemic of hormonal cancers as the current youth age.

It is never too late to educate your kids on the dangers of added sugar in the diet. Remember the 90/10 rule!  A little bit is ok, but even modest amounts are turning out to be  an issue.

As always, I recommend a diet loaded with vegetables, fruits and legumes as the cornerstone of disease prevention.

Happy Thanksgiving,

Where does this discussion continue to?

Dysevolution - a term that means a harmful form of change over time. When we dysevolve, we pass on cultural behaviors and environments that promote mismatch diseases.

Think about this for a second! It is brilliant. You can either evolve with the environment in a positive way or dysevolve in a negative way through poor cultural choices and human altered environments. Think of Chernobyl or the 9/11/2001 Tower collapse and the chemical exposure that left thousands ill. These are accidental, but we have many events that are not like the algal bloom in the mississippi delta or agent orange exposure in Vietnam.

The industrial revolution was a major cause of human advancement in labor efficiency and product production efficiency. Mono culture farms are now providing all the food we need. This has allowed us to spend more time thinking and learning instead of farming for a living. This is great, right?

Let us look at it from another perspective. Do you remember the newsletter on the Victorian era of England being a time of unprecedented health? They had huge advantages in that the vast majority of Victorians still had physical labor as a job requirement. Their food was predominantly plant based and local. Their genes were matched well to the environment.

Now the industrial evolution has brought us to a place where we live mostly without sun exposure, we perform very little physical labor daily and we eat a standard American diet loaded with refined and unhealthy foods. Our genes are poorly matched to this environment.

We have essentially dysevolved from health to DYSease without a second thought.

As an Integrative Medical physician I am avidly trying to get my patients to start evolving again with the current environment.

How do we do this????

Write down 10 things that you think that you can do to start evolving again and email them to: newsletter@salisburypediatrics.com.

Recipe of the Week
Left over turkey.

Ingredients:

3 Sliced turkey cutlets from Thanksgiving turkey
1 Cup of pistachios and walnuts
1 Egg

1 Bunch spring mix lettuce

12 Prunes

2 Teaspoons of balsamic dressing

Zoe's Kitchen Spice of Life seasoning

1 Tablespoon EVOO

S and P

Directions:

Grind nuts in coffee grinder to fine consistency (use sunflower/chia seeds if nut allergic). Place ground nuts and 1 teaspoon of Zoe's seasoning in bowl. Beat 1 egg with a fork in another bowl. Dunk turkey in egg and then cover with nut powder. On medium heat pan fry turkey in EVOO. Just enough to cook egg/nut mix. Bake it for a healthier option.

Place spring mix on a plate and drizzle with balsamic dressing. Place prunes and then place cooked turkey cutlet on the bed of lettuce. S and P to taste.

Enjoy this nicely balanced meal.
