Mentor: someone who imparts wisdom to and shares knowledge with a less experienced colleague.
Frank T. Saulsbury, MD is a mentor of mine from my years at the University of Virginia School of Medicine Pediatrics Residency. This past month, Frank retired after years of service to the children of Virginia. Two months ago, I went back for one more Immunology clinic day with Frank. I wanted to see his greatness one more time and reflect on how he has helped me become a better healer.
Frank educated his students by challenging them to be great. He led by example. He approached every patient with the curiosity of an inspector. No case was too difficult. You wanted to be with Frank and hear him work through a case. He was always kind and thoughtful in his delivery of diagnosis and management. He was purposeful in his choice of words and he loved his patients.
Finding a mentor in life is like hitting the jackpot. Very few people can be the ONE that moves you. I have been fortunate to have had three great mentors in medicine. Frank is the best of them.
When it comes to your children, teach them about the qualities of a good mentor. Help them to see the greatness in people and let them know that it is ok to emulate qualities that they wish to have. They will always be themselves, but God willing they will incorporate the best of others while they become productive citizens.
Be a mentor,

2 Day Diet |
What is a 2 day diet??
It is a diet that is based on the principles of mild calorie restriction pushing the body into a weight loss state. Many cultures practice fasting intermittently to gain mental clarity and transcendence. Think of the anti Thanksgiving feeling.
In an average week, you would reduce your calories to 500 per day from Sunday night at 8pm until Wednesday morning at 8am. In effect you are dieting without having to perform the diet 365 days a year. The constancy of dieting is the root cause of failure for most dieters. (Historically, most dieters end up heavier in the long run than non dieters because they overeat when they fall off the diet wagon.)
Mark Mattson at the NIH has been involved in animal research for years regarding calorie restriction and longevity. His group has shown life can been extended in animals that are calorie restricted by 30%.
Why would this be? Unsure. The same results have not been reproduced in primates and humans. What we do know is that humans on calorie restricted diets are less prone to chronic disease likely due to reductions in insulin promoting foods that are in excess on the standard American diet.
"Studies indicate that rodents that feast one day and fast the next often consume fewer calories overall than they would normally and live just as long as rats eating calorie-restricted meals every single day." This is exactly the effect on humans as studied by Dr. Harvie. Overall, people who fasted for two days felt better and these effects affected the way they ate for the other 5 days.
The intermittent fast also increases the sensitivity of insulin and will counteract the effects of insulin resistance which is a hallmark of metabolic syndrome.
"In 2007 Johnson, Mattson and their colleagues published a clinical study showing a rapid, significant alleviation of asthma symptoms and various signs of inflammation in nine overweight asthmatics who near-fasted every other day for two months." This is likely due to the removal of protein triggers and inflammatory foods from the diet on fast days. This would be a great adjunct to disease management if only patients would comply.
The bottom line:
Eating a well balanced anti inflammatory diet is still likely the best plan for most humans. However, for those that struggle with weight control and disease, the 2 day diet may be a nice solution to the problem as you learn to master moderation.
Fasting for life,
Dr. M
