The mystery of life and health is turning out to be
heavily controlled by bacteria. Go figure, our smallest former enemies, are now our closest allies and the future of our success.

Medicine is always a challenge when what you believed to be true is completely wrong and the opposite is now veritas!!!

Quality Products
A recommended baby bottle. It is BPA and Phthalate free. My review of it looks good. See what you think if you have a bottle fed infant. Glass is still my first preference.

Issue: #33
August 5, 2013

Volume 3, Letter 33

Does sucking on your infants pacifier after it falls on the ground help or hurt the immune system?

Hesselmar et. al. looked at this very question in the June 2013 edition of Pediatrics. The study was performed in Sweden and looked 184 full term infants in an urban setting. 80% of these children had at least one parent with a history of allergic disease.

Parents either cleaned the pacifier by running it under water, boiling it or sucked on it. These children were evaluated by an allergist at 18 and 36 months of age. The results showed that asthma, eczema and IgE (allergy) sensitization were reduced in the parental pacifier sucking group.

"Vaginal delivery and parental pacifier sucking yielded independent and additive protective effects against eczema development. The salivary microbiota differed between children whose parents cleaned their pacifier by sucking on it and children whose parents did not use this practice."

The reduction in allergic disease was 2.5 times compared to the controls.

What does it all mean????

The hygiene hypothesis is coming to life in so many studies. Basically, it states that early microbial exposure by bacteria and viruses promotes immune stimulation in an normal way. The recent over sterilization of the early infant environment has left many children's immune system abnormally stimulated with chemicals and not natural microbes.

The oral flora of the parent is useful to the developing child in the same way as a house dog or farm animal. The evidence is strong. Now it is up to us to go back in time to repair the damage that has occurred in the time of CLEAN IS BEST.

Loving the data,

Teens

Strap on a seat belt and get ready. Teens are one of the greatest challenges to parenting. They are full of zeal and desire to grow and be unique.

Everything that applied to tweens still has merit at this stage. Teens are now fully autonomous of thought and action. They think that they need very little from us except to be chauffeured around. While they may believe this, we know that this is far from reality. The trick is to teach them without them knowing it.

Leading by example is always a starting place for education. If you are texting and driving, they will think that it is ok. If you are industrious and loving at the same time, they will model this behavior.

This an especially important time to be present moment with them as much as possible. Take one on one vacations with them. Attend school events when possible to show support.

Encourage them to work to earn money for their needs. Do not enable them by "giving them whatever they ask for". Jobs can be had anywhere. Mowing lawns, edging and weeding, cleaning out garages, babysitting, dog walking, etc.. can be performed until old enough to apply for a REAL job.

The power of being self sufficient and building self esteem through solid work and school effort will carry them throughout their career and life.

Discuss issues related to girl/boy relationships and respect. Discuss bullying and drugs. Make sure that you keep the lines of communication open. They need to have an outlet and a sounding board for sticky teen situations.

Enjoy them,

Dr. M
