A balanced Italian Snack

Vitamins, probiotics and supplements, do you need them?

People ask me all of the time whether or not they should take vitamins and minerals. The simple answer is NO - but that is only if you eat a varied and balanced diet everyday. Most children are not following a varied and balanced diet, therefore, the answer is YES.

Here are my recommendations for daily supplements:

A good quality multivitamin/multimineral is a great starter for any child. Avoid big box stores/pharmacies which sell only synthetic varieties. Here are some natural recommendations:

For 1 to 10 years of age:

1) Nordic Naturals Nordic Berries

2) Animal Parade

3) Balanced Essentials

Whole food supplements:

1) Juice Plus - good for any age.

For Ages 11 and up:

1) Nature's Plus

2) Balanced Essentials

3) Kirkman Spectrum Complete

High quality fish oil is recommended for all. Fatty acid deficiency in Americans is well documented.

For all ages:

1) Carlson

2) Barleans Omega Swirl

3) Kirkman Coromega

Finally, a probiotic provides for solid gut health. Probiotics are especially necessary for children born by c section and those that were bottle fed a cow's milk formula instead of exclusively breastfed.

For all ages:

1) Primadophilus powder - Excellent all around probiotic

2) Culturelle GG - Perfect for children born by c section

3) HMF Neuro Powder - Very useful for children with major GI or neurobehavioral disorders.

Ask your healthcare provider for doses.  I prefer to dose based on a child's need and medical history.

Diet is most important, but we can still enhance our health

Allergies

For those who suffer from allergies, the time is here for relief. The days of allergy shots with multiple doctor visits are going away.

Sublingual immune therapy, SLIT, (under the tongue) is now available for all allergy sufferers. Burks et al. have proven the efficacy of food allergy desensitization via oral immune therapy. Allergy Choices is a company that has made SLIT available for any patient.

We start by desensitizing the child to outdoor/aero allergens first and then move onto foods. The beauty of this form of allergy desensitization is that it occurs via the mouth and at HOME. The mouth is the site of allergy development to foods and most other allergens.

We are effectively retraining the immune system to behave normally towards natural proteins.

Recipe of the Week

Roasted Beets with Dijon Vinaigrette

Ingredients:

1 Pound beets

1/3 cup EVOO

2 TBSP of Trader Joe's Dijon Mustard

4 Shallots

2 TBSP of red wine vinegar

S and P to taste

Directions:

Wash, peel and cube the beets. Peel and chop the shallots coarsely. Place in a deep baking pan. Drizzle with EVOO and mix. place in oven preheated to 400 degrees F and bake for 40 minutes. Stir frequently. In another bowl, mix vinegar, mustard and 1/4 cup EVOO. Mix thoroughly.

When the beets and onions are finished, add the mustard mix to the beets with a brush. Add more mustard mix if you like it more spicy.  S and P to your taste.  Remember less is more.
