Volume 3, Letter 1

December 24, 2012

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from all of us at Salisbury Pediatrics and Touchstone Pediatrics. We wish you all a blessed and productive year.

I am going to keep this newsletter simple and joyful.

There are times in one's life when you look back and admire the simplicities of life. Then there are times when you feel the complexities of life. Children and dogs have a knack for seeing the simple while enjoying the moment.

Children don't often get hung up with race, color or creed until we fill there minds with the same. I find as I get older, I love the idea of keeping it simple as it gets more complex. Love every moment as if you have never felt the joy of that experience.

Encourage your children to keep a wide open mind and explore the world and everything that nature has to offer. Keep them grounded as the world tries to unground them. Teach them to love above all and respect everyone. We are all different and that is our beauty.

At this time of joy, hold your children and spouse tight. Make a pledge to simplify the time that is coming.

Enjoy the holidays,

Dr. Magryta

Elderberry

The Flu continues to ravage North Carolina and many are left in bed for a week. What can you do?

The most obvious answer is to avoid those that are ill. Remember that on the first day of the illness you can be fooled into thinking that it is a cold. Flu patients are highly contagious in the first 24 hours.

If you are ill and choose to take the pharmaceutical Tamiflu, it is best to start it in the first 48 hours for best effect.

The flu vaccine has been very effective this year in preventing cases of the flu.

If you have become ill with influenza, Elderberry is a nice herbal remedy to try. It works by reducing nasal congestion and stimulating the immune system to kill the virus. It is used throughout the world and is quite effective.

The cooked berry is the edible portion. The stems, leaves, seeds and roots are poisonous and can have a cyanide like effect. Elderberries have a diuretic effect, therefore, use with caution when taking prescription diuretics.

Sambucol is an elderberry combination with vitamin C. Nature's Way makes a nice clean product. Talk to your physician about dosing based on weight. Be proactive if you have any signs of the flu.

The flu - can't kill it,
