A causal link has been found between violent media and sleep problems in preschoolers, ages 3-5 years old. In a study by Garrison et. al. in September's Pediatrics Journal, they evaluated 565 families for media use and then randomized them for a healthy media use intervention or no intervention.
The intervention included a home visit by a case manager who encouraged age appropriate media to replace the violent and inappropriate content. They then assessed sleep patterns at 6, 12 and 18 months post intervention. Children in the non intervention group had a 38% increased risk of sleep onset latency.
While this study is not surprising, it does reinforce the need to avoid this type of exposure. I am always amazed at how many young kids (<10 yo) are playing games like Call Of Duty or Halo, both rated mature. As a parent of 8 and 6 year old children, I am worried about the exposures that children get when visiting other children's homes. Be aware of the effects of media on your kids.
It is in our best interest to politely let other parents know what your guidelines are for media viewing. Prevention will save problems later.
Have a great day,

Why it matters to look inside and not blame outside!
In reading a book called the Untethered Soul by Michael Singer, I came upon a passage that resonated with me.
What does it mean to be "worldly"?
"Worldly doesn't mean that you have money or stature. Worldly means that you think the solution to your inner problem is the world outside. You think that if you change things outside, you'll be okay. But nobody has ever truly become okay by changing things outside. There's always a next problem. The only real solution is to take the seat of witness consciousness and completely change your frame of reference."
To paraphrase: Your problems are best dealt with from within and not placed onto others.
I think of the life of Nelson Mandela and how he survived 27 years of jail in South Africa only to emerge and become the president of South Africa in the 1990's. I use him as an example of how inner peace and thought will allow someone to avoid self destruction on the hate and anger of oppression. When you cannot change your exterior world, you must move inward for peace.
Everyone has the ability to see every situation from a different and better perspective. That choice is the fundamental path to happiness.
Teach your children to see the half full glass in every situation that exists.
