AAa/e Revels in Sell-Out Banquet
37th annual gala a huge success!

On Thursday, October 2, the Biltmore Bowl was filled to the brim with the who's who of the AEC industry.  Embodying the theme, "Honoring our Mission, Shaping our Future," Metro executives, LAUSD directors, Port of L.A. and Long Beach leaders, clients, sponsors, elected officials, and scholarship recipients reveled with good cheer as AAa/e celebrated its 37th Annual Awards Banquet and VIP Reception.  Elected officials in attendance included Congresswoman Judy Chu, Assemblymember Ed Chau, Assemblymember Steven Bradford, Former Assemblymember George Nakano, LACCD Board of Trustees Members Mike Eng and Steve Veres, and Pasadena Community College District Board of Trustees member Linda Wah.  Representatives of other elected officials were in attendance and we thank them for their support.  Throughout the evening guests relished in the fantastic networking opportunities at this sold out gala.

A special thanks to Rear Admiral Brett Muilenburg of the Naval Facilities Engineering Command Pacific, for delivering an optimistic and inspiring keynote address, and to our Mistresses of Ceremonies, Hannah Marte and Monica Morales, Misses Philippines USA 2014.  We also congratulate Leadership Award recipient Raymond Chan, General Manager, City of LA Dept. of Building & Safety; Visionary Award recipient, Martha Welbourne, Chief Planning Officer, Metro; Community Enrichment Award recipient, Bea Hsu, Sr. VP Related California and LAWA Commissioner; as well as our nine scholarship recipients, who received a total of $24,500!

This success of this banquet was only possible with the extraordinary leadership of Banquet Chairs John Posadas and Joseph Fong, and the time and dedication of the Banquet Committee, VIP Committee, AAa/e Foundation, Board Members, all the volunteers, and our association manager Dianne Ochoa.  We sincerely appreciate the generous support of Platinum Sponsor Glumac; Gold Sponsors Metro and URS; Silver Sponsors Gensler and K.D. Navien; and all of the Bronze, Community, and half-table sponsors, as well as the silent auction item donors and bidders, and all of you attendees!  See you at next year's banquet!

CHSR Project BAC Rep Update, October 2014
PP&GA Committee Chair Linden Nishinaga reports the latest on the California High Speed Rail Project

The $68 billion CHSR Project continues to move forward.  Business Advisory Council (BAC) and Professional Services Committee (PSC) meetings took place in Sacramento on August 21 and October 16, 2014.  Current issues include:
  1. FHWA "Safe Harbor Rate":  PSC recommends we allow the Safe Harbor Rate in the currently proposed "Fiscal Year 2014-2015 Annual Work Program Guidelines," and for the pre-audit.
  2. Disparity Study Contract:  Although the Study is completed the Authority cannot release it without FRA's review and approval.
  3. Design-Build Contracts:  The PSC seeks that the Authority's 30% goal for SBE's to be separately made for both design and for construction pursuant to better opportunities for SBE design firms.
  4. The Authority gave updates of the contracts and procurements.  They said ARCADIS won the Project and Construction Management (PCM) contract for CP- 2/3.  They mentioned that design-build RFP proposals for CP-2/3 are due at the end of October 2014.  Also, the RFQ for CP-4 will be issued soon after that.
  5. A representative of prime contractor TPZP gave an update on CP-1.  Per him the project is about 7% complete and is still in the design phase.  This includes test piling, geotechnical investigations, project property acquisitions, abatement, and demolition.  He also gave a current SB utilization report as 29.65% of the contract dollars committed to SBE's, 19.68% to DBE's, and 1.51% to DVBE's so far.
  6. The Authority announced that Thomas Fellenz will soon be stepping down as the BAC Chair in favor of the new chair Jose Camarena.

Congratulations!
