We would like to share with you some information about our  Artist in Residence Program as well as some tips on how to write a stand-out Artists and Education Grant for the Alberta Foundation for the Arts (AFA) if you are looking to subsidize some of the costs.  AFA grants are due April 1st, and we would be happy to assist you with this!

WP Puppet Theatre's Artist in Residence Program


An Artist in Residence is a wonderful opportunity to have an in depth artistic experience in all aspects of puppet theatre production and performance. Led by Wendy Passmore-Godfrey BFA, Founding and Artistic Director of WP Puppet Theatre; she has over 25 years' experience, and is a lifelong learner and a child at heart. 

  • Planned directly with teachers to meet their needs and goals
  • Links to priorities in any curriculum
  • Puppet making, script writing, character development and performance
  • Supplies and equipment included
  • Learning opportunities for Kindergarten through to grade 12
  • Fund up to 75% with a successful Artist in Education grant from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts (AFA)
  • Schools typically book 1-3 weeks

Grant writing tips from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts (AFA)


 

We recently asked the AFA if they had any tips on grant writing that they could share and here are a few:

 

To help your application stand out and compete as effectively as possible, consider the following:

 

  • Be careful not to rely solely on information provided by the artist. Artist residency information is an important component, but should not be used as a substitute for a fully developed proposal. The artist may be providing their exact same information to other schools. Jurors notice identical sounding proposals and may be left with the impression the school did not make sufficient effort in formulating the proposal.

  • Demonstrate how the residency ties into the school's overall direction. How will residency activities compliment the direction articulated in the school's self-described profile? Why does the school want this particular residency?

  • Schools should provide a detailed description and schedule demonstrating how the proposed residency will involve and benefit students. Describe exactly what arts activities students will actively engage in and how this activity links to curriculum. A description of the creative process is important. How will the residency allow students to explore, discover and realize solutions to creative challenges? Describe professional development opportunities for teachers.
