Starting a bucket list

   Sid Fuller retired today.
We had a reception and everyone had cake and Sid was presented with some lovely parting gifts. But, it would be wildly inappropriate to let this day pass without at least a glance at the impact Sid Fuller had on Farmers Branch during his 10 years and 10 days as its Chief of Police.
After 23 years in law enforcement in Irving, Sid came to us in the steamy summer of 2006 and immediately promoted an atmosphere of quiet command at the Justice Center.
Never comfortable in the limelight, Chief Fuller usually let his people shine when it came to advancing community policing initiatives, implementing crime reduction strategies in apartment complexes and dropping the crime rate in this City to record lows.
However, make no mistake about it, all of those things, and so much more, are directly attributable to his leadership.
At his retirement reception today, Chief Fuller received numerous gifts, some serious and sentimental, others not so much.
Sid Fuller is one of the good guys and Farmers Branch is a much better place because he spent a decade here. His tenacity to see things through shone brightly in times of controversy as well as calm. He may have started here six years after the millennium but he clearly brought his department into the 21st century. And, as a result, the Farmers Branch Police Department is nicely positioned for a seamless transition of leadership.
   More on that later.
Today is a day to celebrate a consummate law enforcement professional, tireless advocate for this community and, to many of us fortunate enough to have known him well, a good friend.
Sid says he plans to spend retirement at the lake, teaching part-time and engaging in an "extensive bucket list." It's well deserved.
And, from a grateful community, Chief Fuller, please take our gratitude and very best wishes with you.

Manske Movies to feature 80s classic this Saturday

FARMERS BRANCH ~ Martial arts and lightsabers will dominate the special slate of Manske Movies set for the Library's outdoor amphitheater on certain September Saturdays.
First, the 1984 fan favorite 'The Karate Kid' will kick off Labor Day weekend on September 3.
Then, two weeks later, on September 17, fans are invited to travel to a 'galaxy far, far away' for 2015's "Star Wars: The Force Awakens."  Fans can test their Star Wars knowledge with a trivia contest and their galactic fashion sense with a costume contest before the movie starts.
Both showtimes are at dusk. Both movies are free and open to the public. Blankets and lawn chairs are recommended for the tiered, grassy levels of the amphitheater. Some snacks will be available but families are invited to bring their own picnics (no alcohol, please).
For more information on either feature, call 972.247.2511.

CODE CORNER: Trash & Recycling

In an effort to maintain neighborhood appearance, the City Code specifies certain time frames that material can be placed out for trash or recycling collection.
Whether it be trash, recycling, brush or bulk, items SHOULD NOT be placed out for collection earlier than 6 p.m. the day BEFORE designated collection.
Likewise, recycling containers SHOULD BE returned to their storage locations no later than 9 a.m. the day AFTER scheduled service.
Materials and containers out too early or left out too late is a violation of City Code and may result in a court citation. Find out more about trash and curbside recycling collection.
Additionally, recycling containers should be shielded from street view when not placed out for collection. This could be:
  • In the back yard
  • In the garage
  • Behind a screening fence if stored beside the house

Code Enforcement has provided a helpful video tutorial of how to construct a simple screening fence. A sample screening fence and recycling container can be seen in the lobby at City Hall.
If any resident is unable to construct, or afford to construct, a screening fence, there may be assistance available from local civic agencies (as resources are available). For more information on screening requirements, call Code Enforcement at 972.919.1414.
