BRANCH BULLETIN - eNews from Farmers Branch
Farmers Branch Market to keep things cool with Splish Splash Saturday

FARMERS BRANCH ~ Continuing their trend of featuring a special event each first Saturday of the month, the Farmers Branch Market is planning "Splish Splash Saturday" on Saturday, August 6 at The Grove @ Mustang Crossing, 12700 Denton Drive.
Held every Saturday from May through the end of October, from 8 a.m. until 12 noon, Farmers Branch Market has proved to be one of the more popular Farmers Market concepts in the DFW area and the only one directly on a DART Rail Line.
"Splish Splash Saturday" will include activities and entertainment including water games, a water slide, live entertainment by 'Over a Barrel' seven-piece steel drum band, playing everything from traditional calypso to pop hits. There will also be sno cones from Kona Ice of North Irving/Farmers Branch/Addison and ice cream from Rolling Cone.
In addition to the other vendors, Nuevo Leon will be on hand serving breakfast tacos and mimosas.
The first-year Market regularly features an eclectic selection of vendors from fresh produce to honey, eggs, specialty meats and pasta.
Farmers Branch Market is held at The Grove @ Mustang Crossing, directly adjacent to the Farmers Branch DART Green Line Station and across Denton Drive from the Dr Pepper StarCenter. Parking is available at the StarCenter or the DART parking lot.

Mosquito spraying set tonight in specific neighborhoods

FARMERS BRANCH ~ Mosquito traps positive for West Nile Virus have precipitated mosquito spraying to be scheduled for Wednesday night in designated geographic areas.

Farmers Branch Environmental Health Manager Katy Evans said the areas to be sprayed include specific areas along the southern and northern borders of the City. Spraying began Tuesday night and will continue Wednesday after 9 p.m., weather permitting and will conclude before dawn.
Mosquito dunks (larvacide briquettes), for the treatment of standing water, are available free of charge (limit one per household) at Farmers Branch City Hall and at the Farmers Branch Senior Center.
For more information, please call the Mosquito Hotline at 972.919.9868 or visit farmersbranchtx.gov/mosquito.
Battle of the Badges blood drive takes on new significance in the wake of July 7 sniper attack

FARMERS BRANCH ~ Normally a good-natured competition for bragging rights between Farmers Branch Police and Fire Departments, the Battle of the Badges blood drive, set this year for August 26 & 27, takes on new meaning in the wake of the July 7 sniper attack on police in downtown Dallas.
The annual event will take place between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. that Friday and Saturday at the Community Recreation Center, 14050 Heartside Place. A photo ID will be required.
Carter Blood Center has reported the incident put a strain on the local blood supply with more than 400 units sent to assist the officers and civilians who were shot, but survived.
As such, the Farmers Branch Police and Fire Departments are putting special emphasis on this year's invitation to donate blood to help replenish the local supply. All participants will receive a free, commemorative t-shirt and can still cast a ballot for Police or Fire, in order for one of our local departments to secure those bragging rights.
   For more information, call 817.343.1271.

Code Corner: Trash & Recycling

In an effort to maintain neighborhood appearance, the City Code specifies certain time frames that material can be placed out for trash or recycling collection.
Whether it be trash, recycling, brush or bulk, items SHOULD NOT be placed out for collection earlier than 6 p.m. the day BEFORE designated collection.
Likewise, recycling containers SHOULD BE returned to their storage locations no later than 9 a.m. the day AFTER scheduled service.
Materials and containers out too early or left out too late is a violation of City Code and may result in a court citation. Find out more about trash and curbside recycling collection.

Additionally, recycling containers should be shielded from street view when not placed out for collection. This could be:
  • In the back yard
  • In the garage
  • Behind a screening fence if stored beside the house
Code Enforcement has provided a helpful video tutorial of how to construct a simple screening fence. A sample screening fence and recycling container can be seen in the lobby at City Hall. If any resident is unable to construct, or afford to construct, a screening fence, there may be assistance available from local civic agencies (as resources are available). For more information on screening requirements, call Code Enforcement at 972.919.1414.

DART blogs on Farmers Branch 'sharrows'

FBTX ~ The installation of shared lane markers for bicycles on Valley View Lane has attracted the attention of Dallas Area Rapid Transit that blogged about the new features last week.
"As part of its Trail Master Plan, the city is painting sharrows, or shared-lane arrows, on the outside lanes of Valley View Lane between DART's Farmers Branch Station and Midway Road, except for the stretch between Josey Lane and Webb Chapel Road," wrote DART's Linda Webb-Manon.
She went on to explain that DART buses and light rail trains make it easy for cyclists to transfer between destinations via DART options.
Valley View project gets underway

FBTX ~ With the two outside eastbound lanes of Valley View Lane now under construction, the largest project to date from the 2015 street bond is now underway.
Continuing work from the voter-approved $23.5 million street bond, the project will reconstruct Valley View between Josey and Webb Chapel.
The work is expected to take 10 months to complete.
Public Works Director Randy Walhood said the roadway will feature 10-inch thick concrete paving and will feature seven-foot-wide sidewalks to better accommodate pedestrians.
A new 8-inch waterline will replace the existing cast-iron water line that is more than 50 years old. In addition, the current aerial wiring that connects street lights on Valley View will be placed underground.
'Food Face Off' donation deadline is Friday, August 5

FBTX ~ Chief Sid Fuller and the Farmers Branch Police Department have until Friday to best their counterparts in Addison, Coppell and Carrollton by raising more food donations for the Metrocrest Services Food Pantry in the 'Metrocrest Police Food Face Off.'
   Deadline is August 5.
Donation boxes have been placed in the lobbies of the Justice Center, City Hall, Manske Library, Community Recreation Center and Senior Center.
Anyone can drop off food items to help Farmers Branch Police win the challenge.
Senior Center plans 'Grand' event

FBTX ~ The decades will roll by, from the 1940s to the present day, at the Farmers Branch Senior Center's "Grand Event," planned for Saturday, August 20 from 6 until 9 p.m. at their facility.
Planned as the "ultimate decade party for all generations," the event will feature music, dancing, food and contests.
Officials note this is a Senior Center event so someone over the age of 50 must be included in each ticket sale.
Tickets are available through August 18 at $5 per person or a $25 maximum for each family. Call 972.919.8740.
