Free Pets
Adoption fees waived Saturday only for Clear the Shelter Day
FARMERS BRANCH ~ Pets will be free for the taking, with waived adoption fees, during the annual Clear the Shelter day, set for Saturday, July 23 at the Farmers Branch Animal Adoption Center and at shelters across the Metroplex.
The Animal Adoption Center will be open from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. that day and will be hoping to 'clear the shelter' of all adoptable pets.
The effort comes as part of the third annual event for north Texas animal shelters. With more than 50 facilities participating in 2015, nearly 3,000 pets were adopted across North Texas.
Although the normal $85 pet adoption fee will be waived, all regular services remain the same for pets adopted that date. Those services include microchipping, first round of vaccinations including for rabies, spay or neutering, a free veterinarian exam at participating local clinics and, for adult dogs and cats, testing for heart worm and feline leukemia.
Additionally, members of the Farmers Branch Police Department will be on hand to meet and greet members of the community and give kids a close-up look at a police car.
In last year's event at Farmers Branch, all dogs were adopted and all but six cats.
Clear the Shelters Day is sponsored in part by NBC5. Find out more by calling the Animal Adoption Center at 972.919.8770 or visit cleartheshelters.org.

Reconstruction prepping on Valley View from Josey to Webb Chapel
FARMERS BRANCH ~ Continuing work from the voter-approved 2015 $23.5 million street bond, the Farmers Branch Public Works Department will start next week on the reconstruction of Valley View Lane, between Josey and Webb Chapel.
Public Works Director Randy Walhood said the roadway will be completely reconstructed with 10-inch thick concrete paving and will feature seven-foot-wide sidewalks to better accommodate pedestrians.
A new 8-inch waterline will replace the existing cast-iron water line that is more than 50 years old. In addition, the current aerial wiring that connects street lights on Valley View will be placed underground.
Mr. Walhood said the eastbound side will be the first to be paved. The first stage of the project will be the water main replacement on the eastbound side that is expected to reduce traffic to at least one lane for the first six to eight weeks.
Cost of the project is $3.1 million, funded by the 2015 bond issue. The reconstruction work is expected to last until May of 2017. Mr. Walhood said adjacent, affected property owners will be updated as the various stages of the project advance.

Half-staff orders continue this week
FBTX ~ Loss of life from Dallas to France to Louisiana has resulted in an unprecedented number of back-to-back-to-back half-staff honors, extending through this week.
The City traditionally follows protocol for half-staff honors when the White House issues a proclamation.
Flags were lowered two weeks ago, following the shooting of 12 police officers and the killing of five in downtown Dallas.
Shortly thereafter, the terrorist attack in Nice, France resulted in an additional order for the flag honors. The current half-staff proclamation is in honor of the three police officers killed in Baton Rouge, Louisiana last Sunday.
That order expires at sundown on Friday.
