Memo from the MANAGER

Don't worry, be happy

This week I am taking a break from life, and going to a place where I can't be reached.

You see, as City Manager I seem to be on the job 24/7. If you look at my phone records, e-mails, and texts you would know part of why this is true.

The other part of the equation is in regards to my constant concern for the 362 full time staff, hundreds of part time employees and the 30,000 citizens that I am responsible to and for.

Even though I have tried, I can't seem to turn this concern off. I am constantly engaged when I am in or around the city limits. This sometimes wears on me and some, especially my wife and the folks in the City Manager's office, can see a change in my personality.
When I get too stressed out, I am grateful for those who help me realize that I need a break. Last week, bless his heart, Mayor Phelps told me to go on vacation and leave the city behind and concentrate on celebrating my 31st wedding anniversary without distractions.
That order pretty much foiled my plans to read the first draft of the budget and the 1999 Farmers Branch Creek report on the beach this week.
I am lucky that I have great folks working for the City, like Charles Cox, Managing Director, who can step in and manage anything that comes up in my absence. I appreciate this more than he will ever know.
If you need anything this week, Charles is in charge.
So, I am taking a vacation and trying to let things go, knowing the City is in good hands. I promise I will not do any work related to the City this week, but I will think about how grateful I am to have such a tremendous group of employees and citizens to work for.
I will listen to an assortment of calming island music, including Bobby McFerrin's 1988 hit, "Don't Worry, Be Happy."
   See you next week!

Disaster Assistance
FEMA to stage sign-up event for residents, businesses affected by severe weather

FARMERS BRANCH ~ The Federal Emergency Management Agency will be staging a Disaster Recovery Center at Farmers Branch City Hall, July 1 & 2, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day, to allow Farmers Branch and Dallas County residents affected by May's severe weather to request assistance.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency, along with the American Red Cross, will be at Farmers Branch City Hall July 1 & 2 to assist residents and businesspeople affected by severe weather in May.

Record rainfall in May resulted in widespread flooding across Dallas County. In addition, an EF-1 tornado skipped across Farmers Branch in the early morning hours of May 24, causing minor damage. Even residents with some form of flood insurance are encouraged to apply to see if any federal benefits are available to offset non-covered costs.

There is a federal disaster declaration for Dallas County that covers the period from May 4 through June 19. Citizens will have until July 28 to sign up for individual assistance at the Farmers Branch Disaster Recovery Center or others located throughout Dallas County in the coming weeks.

FEMA Disaster Assistance Teams will also canvass affected neighborhoods to help people sign up for Individual Assistance.

In addition to FEMA, the American Red Cross will also be on hand to offer assistance to anyone affected by the severe weather. The Small Business Administration will also be there to sign up any commercial establishments that were affected by the weather. Businesses have until July 28 to sign up for physical damage to their buildings and until February 9, 2016 to file for economic losses.

For more information, contact Farmers Branch Emergency Management Specialist Ashleigh Feryan at 972.919.2640 or email emergency.management@farmersbranchtx.gov. Additional info on federal assistance can be found at www.disasterassistance.gov or by calling 800.621.3362.
