A Precious Moment

June seems to be the month for weddings, and I have been thinking more about them lately. Bear with me this week as I let you in on why.

Well, it happened.  One of those moments that you never forget if you have a daughter.  That is a day a young man comes to you and asks for your little girl's hand in marriage.  For a person who tries to be ready for anything, I wasn't very prepared when it happened to me a few months ago.

After all, this is MY sweet little darling, who has been worshipping her daddy (along with her twin sister) for 28 years.  How is there going to be room in her heart to allow for another man to guide her, love her and care for her?

Yes, this is kind of silly, but that's what you think when you are faced with the question "Can I marry your daughter?"  Then, you shake off the shock and realize that you are in a truly precious moment.

I was really grateful that Haley's fiancée Steven Gadeken asked me personally for her hand.   It showed a great deal of class and some nerve to approach the situation in the appropriate way. It also spoke to his character and upbringing.

But even more incredible was his answer to my question, "Why do you want to marry my little girl?" Without hesitation he said he loved her and she made him happier than he has ever been in his entire life. And, just to put icing on the cake, he threw in that he will do whatever is possible to make her happy for the rest of his life.

That was hard to argue with and easy to understand. It made my 43 follow up questions moot.

It was very gratifying to hear a young man indicate that he cared as much about my daughter as I do. It made me feel as though everything was going to be alright and that everything was happening as it should. I don't get that feeling very often.

It truly was a precious moment.

And, the answer was "absolutely."
