Bats in my Belfry

Gary 2013

A few City Council meetings back, John Wells , who is a regular visitor to meetings, came up during Citizen Comments and recommended that we research the possibility of building bat houses to help keep down the mosquito population. The next day, I asked Shawna Eikenberry, Management Analyst, to look into bats and their propensity to remove mosquitos. Shawna is a great asset to our office and is particularly good at researching issues quickly. As always, Shawna came back with a huge amount of information for me to read. It seems that while reading the materials I have become enamored with bats.

In fact, did you know:

  • Bats are recognized as the only flying mammal?
  • In 1995 the Mexican free-tailed bat was designated the official flying mammal of Texas?
  • There are 1300 species of bats, with Texas serving as home to 32 species?
  • Bats fly can over 100 miles in a single night hunting for food and can fly over 60 miles per hour?
  • Mexican free-tail bats can eat 2/3 their body weight in moths, beetles, worms and insects?

I can go on forever with bat trivia, but really what I am saying is bats are fascinating animals. The problem is bats have been long maligned in the movies, books, and on television. After reading all I can about the little critters I have a new respect for them. This bat research process has reminded me that it is important to keep an open mind and not always follow conventional wisdom in order to continue to evolve as a person. It is amazing how looking at something a little differently, or studying something a little more in depth can help expand your understanding.

Thank you Mr. Wells for challenging me to think differently.

Special NOTE
Demo/Rebuild program gets facelift to attract more homebuyers

FARMERS BRANCH ~ New "Demo/Rebuild" rules give homebuyers even more incentive to replace older homes with newer ones.

The availability of quality housing stock in the City of Farmers Branch encourages the retention of businesses, attracts new businesses, and promotes expansion of existing businesses to and within the City. In turn, quality housing stock will stimulate growth, create jobs, and increase property and sales tax revenues.

In an effort to accomplish this, the City Council enacted a Residential Demolition/Rebuild Program pursuant to Chapter 380 of the Texas Local Government Code to encourage the redevelopment of existing single-family detached residential properties with the construction of new, higher value, single-family detached residential structures.

The Council recently enhanced this program by establishing two incentive options: One, to provide up to $5,000 for the cost of demolition and a seven (7) years municipal tax rebate, and two, to provide a municipal tax rebate up to 10 years with the option of advancing 50% of the estimated municipal tax increase upon receipt of permanent financing.

Trend continues with no WNV positives

FARMERS BRANCH ~ Officials continue to urge prevention measures against breeding mosquitoes while Dallas County Health and Human Services reports no mosquito traps in Farmers Branch were found to contain West Nile Virus for the second consecutive week.
Farmers Branch Environmental Health Director Stacy Wright cautioned that there is still several weeks to go before the serious West Nile exposure subsides.
"The extremely wet summer, combined with hot temperatures lately, have provided an explosive breeding environment for mosquitoes, including those that can carry West Nile Virus," Mr. Wright explained. "We should not let our guard down as this is an ever-evolving situation."
