Memo from the MANAGER

Servant leadership

I've always thought there was something reassuring about the peaceful transfer of power in government leadership. There may be many things amiss about the American political landscape but one thing we get right is having the people decide who will lead us and those decisions being adhered to with the reverence and respect that our system deserves.

Gary 2013

It will happen again in Farmers Branch on June 30, at a special meeting to canvass the votes from the June 21 runoff election, when the gavel will be passed to a new Mayor from retiring Mayor Bill Glancy.

As those election results won't be known for a few more days, I'd like to take this opportunity to express my deep appreciation for the servant leader I've come to know during his term as Mayor during the past three years.

A description of the current era in Farmers Branch history probably depends greatly on who you talk to but one perspective is inarguable - this has been one of the greatest periods of commercial expansion our community has seen since the first economic downturn of the early 2000s. Make no mistake that the can-do attitude and welcoming spirit Mayor Glancy expresses to all prospective business citizens has much to do with their very wise decision to locate, or to keep their existing business, in Farmers Branch.

This has also been an important time to navigate headlines and Mayor Glancy has exhibited a deft touch in dealing with the media. He knows how to cut through the noise of auxiliary issues to discuss the important points of any given story.

Bill & Frances Glancy

City services and facilities continue to grow and expand during his tenure with a new fire station, redesign of the Gussie rose garden and guidance towards a landmark makeover of City streets, that will be forthcoming in the next 10 years.

But, what has made Bill Glancy a successful Mayor in Farmers Branch has little to do with economic development or street projects or rose gardens. Bill Glancy lives and models the principles of servant leadership every day, dedicated to the people that elected him and always mindful of the future and the legacy the leadership of this era leaves to the children of Farmers Branch.

Still, we also know his 40+ years of service to this community doesn't end here. As much as we can be certain of anything, we can be sure that Bill and Frances Glancy will continue to work for and support Farmers Branch to the best of their abilities in the years to come.

And that is quite a legacy.

Volunteers sought for the Rose Gardens of Farmers Branch

FARMERS BRANCH ~ With the ever-expanding selection of roses in several different gardens, the need for volunteers in the Rose Gardens of Farmers Branch is greater than ever.

Between Gussie Field Watterworth Park, the rose gardens near the DART station and in the Historical Park and other beds, Farmers Branch is home to more than 500 different roses.

Maintenance and upkeep of these gardens takes time which is why the Parks and Recreation Department is actively seeking volunteers (green thumb optional) to assist in rose garden beautification projects under the guidance of the City's expert Landscape Manager, Pam Smith.

Perks of volunteering include access to the exclusive invitation-only City Manager's Rose Party, limited-edition Rose Garden t-shirt, top-notch gardening tips, and more. Outdoor-loving individuals interested in volunteering should contact the Parks and Recreation Department at 972.919.2620 or visit fbroses.com.

Vacant lots dedicated as park, named for longtime volunteer

FARMERS BRANCH ~ Three vacant and undeveloped lots adjacent to Oran Good Park have been dedicated for public park purposes and named for Raymond DeLeon, longtime Farmers Branch resident and former Executive Vice President of the Farmers Branch Baseball Association.

Raymond DeLeon

The action was taken by the Farmers Branch City Council during their regular meeting, June 17. Accompanying this dedication of land for park purposes is a plan to construct a tee-ball field and associated parking on the property.

The three City-owned lots have been vacant since 2009.

Mr. DeLeon has dedicated untold volunteer hours to further baseball in Farmers Branch and was selected to the Farmers Branch Sports Hall of Fame in 2006.
