Cutting a rug
Ever have the music in you? Need to kick up your heels? Cut a rug? Scoot some boots? Swing your partner to and fro?
Well, if you're over the age of 50, you're in luck.
One of the finest, and most sought-after, Senior clubs in the entire Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex will give you an avenue to make you feel like dancing.
And, they're right here in Farmers Branch.
Heels were first kicked up in 1988 as Farmers Branch Dance Club hosted their first Monday night dance at the old Farmers Branch Senior Adult Activity Center.
At about the turn of the century, the Seniors moved to the new Center on Valwood Parkway. The Dance Club moved right along with them.
Today, some 1,300 Monday nights later, their weekly crowds usually top 200, dancing to the sounds of different live bands every week, ranging from Country/Western to Ballroom and a few points in between.
A $5 bill is all you need to get in on a Monday night at 7 p.m. (or 6, if you're interested in free dance lessons). That includes refreshments.
The first and third Mondays are typically Country bands while the second and fourth are usually Ballroom.
If there's a fifth Monday? Well, anything can happen.
The success of the group can be attributed to the tireless efforts of Buford Watson, who first became president of the Farmers Branch Dance Club in 1990 and now serves as Chief Executive Officer.
The first half of the Dance goes from 7 until 8 p.m., followed by an intermission until 8:30, then the second half until 9:30 p.m.
Similar clubs have tried and failed to achieve a fraction of the success enjoyed by the Farmers Branch Dance Club. And that Monday night force of nature really brings into sharp focus the vital, vigorous and very active Senior community that is the foundation of life in Farmers Branch.
Drawing on our strengths is how Farmers Branch continues to amplify the quality of life values that continue to draw people to live, work and do business here. It's what makes the difference between communities with a sense of awareness, identity and direction and those that have become so static that they verge on being lost in relevance.
Can something as simple as a weekly dance provide that much energy for a community? You should go by the Senior Center on a Monday night and see for yourself.
The answer is 'yes.'

Valley View lanes taken away under 35E for six months
FARMERS BRANCH ~ Crews working on the 35Express project have closed the left turn lanes of east and westbound Valley View under Interstate 35E for center bridge support and expansion. The closure is expected to last for six months.
Officials with the 35Express project say three lanes will be maintained in each direction during the period with left turns allowed from the coned off work areas under the bridge. The U-turn lanes were already closed from LBJExpress work at that location and will remain closed for the 35Express work during the six month period.
Local residents and businesspeople regularly traveling that route, especially during morning and afternoon rush hours, are encouraged to develop alternate routes.
35Express is the construction group responsible for renovating Interstate 35E from LBJ freeway in Dallas County, north to U.S. Highway 380 in Denton County. For more information on the 35Express project or to sign up for their email and text alerts, visit www.35express.org or call 214.483.7777.

Council set for public hearing on beer & wine sales overlay districts
FARMERS BRANCH ~ As part of their only regularly scheduled meeting in June, the Farmers Branch City Council will hold a public hearing on a proposal to create beer and wine sales overlay districts, following voter approval of a local option to allow such sales for off premise consumption.

This follows a similar public hearing at a special Planning and Zoning Commission meeting last month. The Farmers Branch Planning Department will outline a proposal to create Beer and Wine Sales Overlay Districts, adopting regulations regarding uses permitted to sell beer and wine and prohibiting the sale of beer and wine in drive-through alcoholic beverage sale facilities.
