Memo from the MANAGER

Civic pride

For most men, there are more comfortable places to be in the world than amongst throngs of women, celebrating fashion and style.

Gary 2013

However, when the group is the Farmers Branch Woman's Club, and the occasion is their annual Spring Luncheon and Fashion Show, there is no place I would have rather been on a midday Friday.

The stereotype of any community's Woman's Club conjures up images of ladies in hats, partaking of tea with finger sandwiches and a little Mozart playing in the background.

   Not here.

Oh, there might be tea and lunch, and maybe a hat or two, but these ladies aren't messing around. They are passionate, they are dedicated and they are very serious about the business of supporting the Farmers Branch community.

And, they have fun doing it.

The Farmers Branch Woman's Club donated fountains to the Rose Gardens at Gussie Field Watterworth Park in celebration of their 50th anniversary this year.

For 50 years, the Farmers Branch Woman's Club has been active in this community, knowledgable about this community and among the best ambassadors Farmers Branch has to offer. That makes them invaluable to this community and I know the City staff joins me in expressing our appreciation to them for the ongoing work that they do.

Whenever you see the new fountains in the Rose Gardens at Gussie Field Watterworth Park, think of the Woman's Club because that's where they came from, in honor of their 50th anniversary. This year, their philanthropic causes include the Metrocrest Medical Foundation, Bea's Kids and senior benefits for Metrocrest Services.

In addition to this, they also give scholarships to high school graduating seniors. Depending on how successful fundraising has been in a given year, this can range from five to 10 scholarships.

When I was among about five men at their annual Style Show on Friday, one thing became apparent. When you have a mission in life and you're committed to it, there's no reason you can't have a good time on the journey. Suddenly, I realized that I wasn't outnumbered, I was among like-minded friends.

Make no mistake about it. Farmers Branch is a better place because of community pride and civic participation. No where is that more evident than among the membership of the Farmers Branch Woman's Club.

FARMERS BRANCH ~ Prescription and over-the-counter medications can be turned in for destruction to the Farmers Branch Police Department at CityWide CleanUp Day on Saturday, April 12, from 9 a.m. until 12 noon, at Oran Good Park.
This is the second year the FBPD has participated in the Drug Enforcement Administration's annual medication take back event as part of CleanUp Day.
Farmers Branch Police officials said the program is anonymous with no questions or requests for identification. Officers will not count, inventory or log drugs turned in.
Medication may be disposed of in its original container or by removing it from the container and disposing of it directly into the box.
Other DEA guidelines for the take back event include:
  • All solid dosage pharmaceutical product and liquids in consumer containers may be accepted.  Liquid products, such as cough syrup, should remain sealed in their original container.  The depositor should ensure that the cap is tightly sealed to prevent leakage.
  • Intra-venous solutions, injectibles, and syringes will not be accepted due to potential hazard posed by blood-borne pathogens.
  • Illicit substances such as marijuana or methamphetamine are not a part of this initiative and should not be placed in collection containers.
In addition to the medication takeback, CityWide CleanUp Day will include household chemical collection, electronics recycling and document destruction along with donations of materials and media to the Farmers Branch Manske Library and to Metrocrest Services. The Library requests that donated materials be clean and intact. Metrocrest Services will be accepting clothing and shoes only.

News NOW
The past will be 'Encountered' this fall at Keenan

FARMERS BRANCH ~ Switching seasons from previous years, officials at the Farmers Branch Historical Park have announced that the hugely popular 'Encounters from the Past' interactive tours of Keenan Cemetery will be moving to the autumn months.

The 'Encounters' tours offer visitors the chance to walk through the oldest cemetery in Dallas county, encountering historic figures in Farmers Branch history (portrayed by costumed re-enactors). For the past several years, the tours have taken place in the early spring. However, officials said the fall season offers a better opportunity for staffing the event and a special atmosphere, with the impending holidays and other programs set for that time of year.
Specific dates will be announced later this year. In the meantime, for questions about this or any other program at the Farmers Branch Historical Park, call 972.406.0184.

Voluntary water conservation remains in effect

FARMERS BRANCH ~ Although 2013 proved to be wetter than usual for north Texas, Farmers Branch City Manager Gary D. Greer wants to remind residents voluntary water conservation measures remain in effect.

"Although the rain we've had last summer was extremely rare for that time of year, we remain in the clutches of a prolonged drought," he explained. "That's why we implemented Stage 1 voluntary conservation measures, under our drought contingency plan, in early 2012 and that's why we're continuing that stage now."
