Memo from the MANAGER

The weather outside is frightful

It is, in fact, beginning to look a lot like Christmas. And, the weather outside (will soon be) frightful.

Gary 2013

Yes, it is a standard Christmas season in Texas with 80 degrees expected today and freezing rain by tomorrow afternoon. Of course, how this winter storm develops could have an effect on plans for the Christmas Tree Lighting event, set for Saturday evening.

We understand that so many families in Farmers Branch count on this event as the official kickoff to their Christmas seasons. As such, I can tell you with absolute certainty that the Parks and Recreation Department and everyone involved with the event want to do everything possible to make the Tree Lighting happen on Saturday.

However, the safety of our citizens, and our City employees, is our number one priority, so stand by for more information in the next 24 to 48 hours as it becomes available. I would recommend staying updated via the City's website, Branch Mail and the Special Events Hotline number at 972.919.1433.

Also, you should know that our Emergency Management Coordinator, Fire Chief Steve Parker and our Public Works Director, Randy Walhood, are in close contact with the National Weather Service and all affected City staff. The bottom line is we hope the weather passes us by, but we'll be ready if the slick stuff sets in.

Now, this is Texas, so, Saturday could be balmy and 72 or it could be the next great ice age. Best advice I can offer is to stay tuned and, when the weather is not so frightful, take in the Christmas Tour of Lights. If you haven't found your holiday spirit yet, that's a great way to bring it on.
