Do it anyway
One of the best pieces of advice I ever received was "it's not the events in your life that make a difference, its how you handle them."
Call it maturity, call it self-actualization or whatever, but with each passing year I seem to more fully understand that credo - that we each have a choice in how we react to everything in our lives. The variables are character, ethics, integrity and courage.
Another part of this equation is the concept of balance - not just balance between work life and home life but balance in facing challenges and giving them the attention they deserve.
Achieving that balance and making choices to handle life's challenges with character, ethics, integrity and courage sometimes takes a healthy dose of perspective.
This one comes from author and speaker Dr. Kent M. Keith, when he was a 19-year-old undergrad at Harvard. It has always been one of my favorites. I hope it becomes one of yours.
The Paradoxical Commandments
People are illogical, unreasonable, and self-centered.
Love them anyway.
If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives.
Do good anyway. If you are successful, you win false friends and true enemies. Succeed anyway. The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway. Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable. Be honest and frank anyway. The biggest men and women with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest men and women with the smallest minds. Think big anyway. People favor underdogs but follow only top dogs. Fight for a few underdogs anyway. What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight. Build anyway. People really need help but may attack you if you do help them. Help people anyway. Give the world the best you have and you'll get kicked in the teeth. Give the world the best you have anyway.

Farmers Branch recognized for financial transparency
AUSTIN ~ For setting the bar with efforts of transparency in government accessibility and reporting, the City of Farmers Branch has been awarded the Gold Leadership Circle Award by the Texas Comptroller's Office for the fourth consecutive year.
The Leadership Circle program was launched in 2009 to recognize local governments across Texas that are striving to meet a high standard for financial transparency online.
Specifically, award criteria includes whether or not the government is opening its books to the public, providing clear, consistent pictures of spending and sharing information in a user-friendly format that lets taxpayers easily drill down for more information.
The Comptroller's Office defines "Gold" as those agencies that are excelling with transparency efforts. "Silver" is designed to encourage those who are making progress, while "Bronze" is meant to inspire those who are just beginning their transparency efforts.

Town Hall Meeting attendees to vote on bond preferences, Thursday
FARMERS BRANCH ~ Popular at last summer's Town Hall Meeting, handheld voting devices will be making a return appearance at Thursday night's event so that those in attendance can weigh in on preferences concerning a possible bond election in 2014.
