I beg your pardon
The late, great Joe South once wrote a song that country singer Lynn Anderson made big in 1970. As the lyric goes, "I beg your pardon, I never promised you a rose garden."
Well, to paradoxically paraphrase that classic, in Farmers Branch, I actually did promise you a rose garden.
Several, in fact.
When you look around, you can see roses proliferating all over the City as part of the Rose Gardeners of Farmers Branch program that enlists our homeowners to build on the beauty of our larger rose gardens by including roses in their own landscaping.
The result is going to be a City of roses like no other.
I bring this up now because the timing is right with prime blooming season coming up in October. And, we'll be celebrating the beauty those roses bring to our streets and our neighborhoods in a couple of unique ways.
First, on October 19, rosarians from Farmers Branch and beyond will converge on our rose gardens for the annual 'Celebration of Roses' to include tours, expert lectures and the Dallas Rose Society's fall show, here at City Hall. Also in October, the Rose Gardeners of Farmers Branch will get together for their annual Garden Party to celebrate the year along with the opportunity to show off their most beautiful products. And, the great thing is both of these opportunities are free. If you're interested in roses, come by the 'Celebration' on October 19. If you have ground to plant, you're cordially invited to become one of the Rose Gardeners of Farmers Branch. Simply register by October 1 to be eligible for this year's Rose Gardeners of Farmers Branch Rose Show (separate from the October 19 event) and garden party. All participants receive a Farmers Branch Rose Garden Crest to display at home, a rose plant at the Garden Party and a specially engraved bud vase for entry in the show. To discuss roses, ask questions or to get involved and volunteer to adopt-a-bed, call Parks and Recreation Department Landscape Manager Pam Smith at 972.919.2625. |
