Parent Programs Newsletter

Greetings Parents & Family Members,

I've started attending some group fitness classes at the RAC and it's not a place I thought I'd find myself thinking "wow. Our students are awesome."  But there I was, watching our student group fit instructor lead class with such confidence!  I was beaming with pride (or was that sweat?  Who knows?)!  Most of the students participating in the class did so with enthusiasm; others seemed self-conscious.  So, I was also reminded that this is a critical development time in our students' lives.  They are questioning who they are and often feel like they are under lots of pressure.  Take some time this month to tell your student how proud you are of them.  Or how much you support them.  This is the month of love, right?  Arrange for a Valentine's surprise!  Register for a Spring Family Weekend event and tell your student you're coming to visit (see details below).  Mail a care package. The possibilities are endless!

You may notice that our website has changed.  Although it looks lovely, this isn't the final version!  We have lots of exciting changes for parents coming up in the next couple of months.  Imagine - a community where parents of Georgia Southern students can communicate via message boards.  A website that has content tailored to your interests.  E-mail options that let you select the types of news you want to receive.  It's all coming . . . can't wait to tell you more about it!

Lastly, Fall Family weekend has been scheduled for September 27-29, 2013!  Registration won't open until this summer, but begin making your hotel reservations now!

Sincerely,
Erin Sig Transparent

Eagle ROTC Cadets Win Ranger Challenge

Georgia Southern University's Eagle Battalion won the 2013 6th Brigade Ranger Challenge last weekend in Camp Blanding, Fla. This is the first time Georgia Southern has captured the trophy in the two day challenge that tests the physical endurance and mental agility of the nine person team. Today, the cadets presented the championship trophy to University president Brooks Keel, Ph.D.

"I can't tell you how delighted and pleased I am," said Keel. "What an honor it is for our ROTC program to represent the 6th Brigade and to represent Georgia Southern in such an incredible way. We are so proud of these young men and women and for what they do for our University and our country."

The Eagle Battalion won by just one point and beat 37 teams from the southeastern United States and Puerto Rico. The Army ROTC Department fielded two teams this year with 280 cadets. The Eagle Battalion is comprised of Georgia Southern students, and the Coastal Battalion is made up of students from Armstrong Atlantic State University, Savannah State University and the Savannah College of Art and Design. The Coastal Battalion finished sixth in the competition.

Letter from University Housing

Greetings from Statesboro,

It is hard to believe, but it is already the time of the academic year when planning for next year begins: what classes to take, declaring or switching a major, and where to live. Our hope is that your student will choose to remain on campus and continue to enjoy the benefits that living on-campus provides. With new complexes being added in the Statesboro community next fall, the opportunity to live in the "newest" complex can be quite appealing. Despite all of the slick marketing efforts that make off campus living appear very attractive, the truth is that the advantages of staying on campus far outweigh anything off campus housing can offer. Simply...we do it better.

  • Semester payment; summer residence is optional
  • Dedicated University Police presence
  • Superior staff and services
  • Campus resources

There are a few complexes that can match our amenities for upperclassmen and do so for a "less per month" cost. But, as many of our students who live off campus share with us: you get what you pay for. Our facilities are better maintained and our response to issues is without compare. We have highly qualified full time facility's staff dedicated to our residents and complexes: off campus properties cannot match our quality of response. Moreover, we are as concerned and focused on our residents being successful as upperclassmen as we are when they are new Eagles. If it is important that your student to remain connected to and supported by Georgia Southern outside the classroom, then on campus housing IS the best option. Overall, our students feel our housing is superior, and have said so year after year in a national bench marking study we administer every spring.

We are currently accepting applications for our 1500 upperclassmen beds in Centennial Place, University Villas, or Freedoms Landing (our newly refurnished complex).

Class Alumni Connection Lecture Series

The CLASS Alumni Connection Series lecture continues Tuesday, February 26th at 7:00 p.m. in the Foy Building's Carol A. Carter Recital Hall.

The CLASS Alumni Connection Series brings successful alumni back to campus to talk about the value of their liberal arts education. Speakers will talk about their time at Georgia Southern - the classes they took, influential professors, experiences they had, programs they participated in, and more - and how those experiences have helped them succeed post-college. Freshmen and undeclared students will especially benefit from the series, but students seeking a minor are also encouraged to attend.

The second lecture in the biannual series features Grant Dudley (BS '99), the editor-in-chief of HGTV's blog Design Happens and digital programming manager of HGTV.com.

Since graduating from Georgia Southern with a broadcasting degree, Grant has worked as the associate producer of American Morning with Paula Zahn on CNN, marketing coordinator for Surprise by Design on the Discovery Channel, and editor and digital programming manager for FoodNetwork.com.

Registration for summer classes is now available! Encourage your student to register early for the best selection. Taking summer classes will help your student graduate on time, take advantage of smaller class sizes and even shorter semesters! Your student can even take summer classes abroad! Over 1600 summer classes are available right now.

Georgia Southern's Herty Advanced Materials Development Center Marks 75th Anniversary

The Herty Advanced Materials Development Center, a world-leader in materials research and product development, will mark its 75th year anniversary in 2013 by celebrating its achievements, milestones and growth. Through a host of activities, Herty will honor the legacy of Dr. Charles H. Herty, whose pioneering work in process chemistry helped create the modern pulp and paper industry in the Southeastern United States. The Herty Center will recognize its long-standing achievements and its industrial partners; the impact it has had on economic growth; and present its exciting new initiatives.

Established by the State of Georgia in 1938, the Herty Center was created to provide research and development support to the pulp and paper industry. Early work at the Herty Center focused on chemical pulping and the commercialization potential of southern soft woods, and especially southern pine. This work directly enabled the modern pulp and paper industry to develop in Georgia and throughout the Southeast. This industry has evolved to become a key industry within Georgia, topping $25 billion in output in 2011, providing over 118,000 jobs and generating $15.1 billion in revenues, with the majority of this coming from pulp and paper manufacturing.

Making the Most of Family Weekend

With our first Spring Family Weekend event coming up this month, here are some tips for how to best enjoy the time with your student!

Try New Things There will likely be a slate of activities available during the weekend. Try some new things with your student, from service projects to  a-capella concerts. He/she may find a new hobby, interest, or direction as a result!

Meet and Mingle
Attend receptions, talk with other parents, and meet administrators and faculty. These folks are at your disposal during the weekend.Plus you will get a better feel for what campus life is all about and who is available to your student!

Put Yourself in Visitors Mode
You're on your student's turf now. Let him/her take the lead and show you their place with pride!

Participate on Campus
It might be tempting to head off-campus away from the hub-bub yet participating on campus is how you and your student will feel most connected. Check out the campus facilities while your visiting. If the pool is open, go for a swim! Or roam around the student union and take it all in!

Other Tips:
Get to know your student's friends during the weekend. You may even suggest ahead of time that a group of families and friends should go out to dinner one night!

Ask someone to take a family photo of you during the weekend! Save it as a happy a memento.

Hide a note for your student so that he'll find it once you've gone home! It'll help the good feelings associated with your visit linger on.

Financial Aid Reminder

FEDERAL FINANCIAL AID REQUIREMENT:

Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) is a Federal and State requirement which defines standards of progress for student financial aid.

In order for a student to remain eligible to receive financial aid, a student must make satisfactory academic progress toward the completion of a degree.

All students receiving or planning to receive financial aid are affected.

All students are responsible for knowing the number of hours they have earned and their cumulative GPA to maintain SAP.

Students can calculate their status using the SAP calculator at GeorgiaSouthern.edu/calculator .

The SAP policy can be reviewed on the Georgia Southern University Financial Aid web site at: GeorgiaSouthern.edu/sap.
