Dear Provider,
The holiday season is quickly approaching and there's no time like the present to tell you how thankful we are for the commitment you have made to Orange County's children. Through our partnership children are learning how to read, learning self-management skills and are more prepared to make academic gains once they enter elementary school.
This organization has so many things to be thankful for such as the generous support from the Orlando Magic Youth Foundation for sponsoring a CDA training program. We're also thankful for the volunteers who read to VPK students during the week at early education sites.
As you'll read below 2013 is already shaping up to be an exciting year. Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida! is right around the corner so stay tuned.
Happy Holidays,
Karen Willis

Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida!
| |
Mark your calendars and rev up your engines to "Take the Lead and Read" for Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida! 2013 which is scheduled for the week of January 14-18, 2013.
The goals of Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida! are to promote literacy throughout the state by raising awareness of the great things happening in school districts and coalitions. Most of all, the objective is to promote the enjoyment of reading for children and adults of all ages.
We're trying to reach one million minutes, so don't forget to keep count of how many minutes you read that week. That Wednesday VPK classes are being asked to participate in the Simultaneous Reading of Hot Rod Hamster, by Cynthia Lord.

Infant/Toddler Child Development Associate (CDA) Coaching Program
| |
Congratulations to the 19 infant/toddler teachers who recently submitted for their Infant/Toddler Child Development Associate credential after completing a training program sponsored by the Orlando Magic Youth Foundation.
The teachers received specific infant/toddler training and observations focused on strengthening the quality of the care provided to the little ones in their classrooms. ELCOC's own Joan Bell led the classes and conducted the students' observations.
Participating providers included Phyllis Williams (Anointed Word Faith Academy), Rowena Judd (Apopka Children's Academy), Hope Smith (BETA Center), Cristal Bambino (Childtime), Christina Folsom & Katy Vickers (First Steps), Isbeth Lopez (Good Homes Preschool), Maribella Terrero & Nikkita White (La Petite Lake Underhill), Maria Gonzalez (Lashundra's Tots), Yolanda Bennett (the Little Red Train Preschool), Misty Harmon (Margie's Non-Stop Kiddie Kare), Angelina Nichols (Mt. Sinai Child Development Center), Sharon Thomas (Orlando Day Nursery), Kristi Holton (Prince of Peace Preschool), Terri-Ann Clarke & Suroojdai Singh (Today's Kids), Angel Barkley (Trinity Lutheran School), and Nikki Maynard (Treasure Kids Academy). |
ELCOC CLASS Pilot | |
We implemented a new quality measurment known as CLASS this year. It's an observation tool that focuses on the effective classroom interaction between teachers and children. It consists of 3 Domains (Emotional Support, Classroom Organization and Instructional Support) with 11 Dimensions.
The pilot began with 60 directors who will complete training this year. At this time we would like to congratulate: Patricia Moser, Marie Brown, Klara Pasquale, Roshanda Clay, Billinda Boldt, Jeana Palomino, Gwendolyn Irvin, Natasha Hamilton, Lynn Redd, Andrea Patulak, Dayannara Sanclemente, Meralis Acevedo, Patricia Ruiz, and Misti Castner.
Our goal is to have each director "own" CLASS and the results. |
UF CLASS Pilot Project | |
The second assessment of the University of Florida CLASS pilot program will be over before the end of the month.
In early March the Office of Early Learning (OEL) developed a pilot program with the University of Florida using the CLASS tool. Ten educators participated with the pilot and beat the national class average in 10 out of the 14 domains.
Congratulations and best wishes on the second assessment! |

Early Learning Information System
E.L.I.S. | |
In a little under five months, we will switch to the web-based Early Learning Information System (ELIS). It will be used to manage the delivery of Child Care Resource & Referral (CCR&R), School Readiness (SR), Voluntary Pre-kindergarten (VPK) and related child care services in Florida.
Orange County will switch over to ELIS April 1, 2013. The system will be accessible to everyone, including parents and providers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You will now be able to do your work "your way" and when it's convenient for you.
More information on training and new processes to come. |
