"From the Principal's Desk"
A Message from Mr. Dundee
Each newsletter will feature "From the Principal's Desk." Below is the first from our new principal, Mr. Jamie Dundee.

Dear Parents, Families and Friends of GCIT:

Let me begin by expressing how excited I am to begin a new school year. Although I am not a stranger to many of you, I would like to formally introduce myself and provide you with some background information about my experiences. I have been a part of the GCIT school community since 1996, serving in various capacities from School Psychologist, Director of Athletics and Director of Special Education. As I begin my first school year as Principal of GCIT, I am energized and deeply committed to making a positive difference in the lives of your children. We will accomplish this by setting high academic expectations for all learners and providing supportive systems to assure they are met. By addressing school culture, setting high standards for teacher performance, increased academic expectations for all students and engaging the community, it is our goal at GCIT that all graduates are college and career ready.

Click here to read more from Mr. Dundee about his philosophy, what GCIT and its staff will provide the students, and how a working relationship between home and school can be accomplished.

Allied Health News

HOSA Nationals

In June, GCIT's Allied Health HOSA State Champion, Caitlin Ross, attended the HOSA National Leadership Conference in Orlando, Florida. Caitlin competed against ninety HOSA members from across the United States in the Medical Photography Event.  GCIT recent graduate, Sarah Mae Medalla, campaigned for National HOSA Office. In order to qualify she had to take a rigorous exam along with participating in an intensive interviewing process from the HOSA board members. It was a great learning experience for Sarah Mae. We wish her the best of luck.  Our HOSA students had a great time trading state pins, meeting students from all over the country and of course enjoying the Disney theme parks. The HOSA Co-Advisors and Allied Health and Medical Sciences faculty would like to extend our sincerest congratulations!

Summer Camp at GCIT

This summer, the Allied Health Department was busy with four weeks of summer camp. Sixth, Seventh and Eighth graders attended Miss Johnson's "Is it Magic or Medicine?" program. Students learned magic tricks that connected them to various Allied Health fields, including Surgery, Nursing and Dentistry. The room was filled with laughter and clapping as student's demonstrated their own exciting magic tricks. They also learned medical techniques such as how to take temperatures and how to use a wheelchair. It was an exciting summer to see these young people taking advantage of all the great programs. I know we will see some of them in the years to come.

Academy of IT & DC

Freshman Achieve IC3 Certification

Congratulations to the IT/DC freshman class. All twenty-four students passed their final certification exam, Key Applications. The Key Applications exam covers popular word processing, spreadsheet and presentation applications and the common features of all applications.

By passing all three exams, each student is now IC3 certified. With IC3 Certification, they are instantly recognized as someone with the critical entry-level skills needed to use the latest computer and Internet technology effectively to achieve business objectives, expand productivity, improve profitability and provide a competitive edge.

Juniors & Seniors Pass Networking Certification

Both the juniors and seniors in the Fundamentals of Networking class took their Cisco Certified Entry-Level Networking Technician (CCENT) exam this past June. Sixteen students are now CCENT certified!

The CCENT certification validates the ability to install, operate and troubleshoot a small enterprise branch network, including basic network security. With a CCENT, a network professional demonstrates the skills required for entry-level network support positions - the starting point for many successful careers in networking.

Congratulations to: Elizabeth Culver, John Dwyer, Nathan Evans, Benjamin Wooler, Zachary Unkle, Jacob Simila, Jonathan Abbott, Christopher Niemann, Daniel Barrett, Paul Barrett, Cory Monteleone-Haught, Ashley McGinn, Brooke Schiesser, Thomas Hacker, Drew DeLellis, Robert Koestler.

IT Students Work for District IT Department

Many of the students in the IT class continue to participate in a paid internship with the school district's IT department. They are able to assist the staff in fixing, repairing, troubleshooting and maintaining the school district's network, computers, tablets, SmartBoards and all other technology.

Two former students, Ric Rey Vergara ('13) and Tyler Postorivo ('13), continue to work for the district while they are going to college. Both former students participated in the internship program in their junior and senior year and were hired immediately after graduation. Ric Rey attends Rowan University and is majoring in Computer & Electrical Engineering. Tyler also goes to Rowan University and is majoring in Marketing. They both enjoy teaching the current students what they learned through the program and how an IT department functions.

A faculty representative of each of our Academy programs attended the annual National Academy Foundation Conference from July 8 - 12, 2014. The goal of the conference was to improve and maintain the quality of our NAF academies to ensure high school students are prepared for college and career success. This professional development will enable teachers to adapt new strategies and ideas to implement the NAF model which has led to career and college readiness.

Parents & Students Can Subscribe to
Teacher Class Pages
Parents & Students Can Receive Homework Alerts & Students Can Submit Assignments Online

Now students and parents can subscribe to teacher class pages on the GCIT web site and receive automated emails each day as teachers post assignments to their class pages.

This feature is known as the "Student Vault." The feature is only available for teachers who have created class pages on the GCIT site.

Parents can create an account and add their children's classes to their "My Classes" list. The parent account will customize the website and allow parents to see just the classes that they subscribe to and will also send assignment notifications to the email address associated with the account.

Students can create their own account with the added bonus of being able to submit assignments online should their teacher set the assignment up that way. In order to do this, students should print out their verification code that is generated during the registration process and bring it to one of their teachers for verification. This will then allow their account to submit assignments online to teachers that allow it.
Please see the documents below to help you in creating either a student or parent account.
