Andrews & Wiest Win Top Tech Challenge
|
On Saturday, Jan. 25, 77 students from more than 30 local high schools participated in a Top Tech Challenge at Universal Technical Institute's (UTI) Exton campus.
Paired in teams of two, students competed against one another by completing various automotive technician tasks, including a written test, automotive part and tool identifications, and an electrical workstation test.
Dave Andrews and Jimmy Wiest, both from Gloucester County Institute of Technology, took home first place after securing the top scores overall on a written test and four hands-on challenges including parts and tool identification, as well as a scanner tool and electrical test.
The winning duo received a stocked UTI Snap-On tool box (valued at $10,000) for their high school.
In addition, other top scoring teams won Snap-On gift certificates valued at $1,000 for first-place winners, $500 for second-place winners, and $250 for third-place winners. "With so much discussion surrounding STEM education and its role in closing the skills gap, events such as our Top Tech Challenge are a great opportunity to get in front of our nation's younger generation to encourage them to begin thinking about their careers early on and get them excited about learning how they can apply STEM principals to their coursework," said Kevin Gero, regional admissions director at UTI-Exton.
"Especially for those aspiring to become automotive and diesel technicians, it's great exposure of gaining a realistic view of what it means to pursue a career in this industry." |

"I Hear GCIT Singing" In Mrs. Williams' Class |
Listen up! The students, or should we say poets, in Mrs. Williams' American Literature classes were busy writing poems this month. They studied several of Walt Whitman's well-known poems, including "I Hear America Singing". In his poem, Whitman celebrates the spirit and diversity of turn of the century American citizens merrily at work.
After exploring the various techniques of writing "catalog" poems, students worked individually and in groups to create their own free verse poetry. Applying the literary techniques of anaphora and rhythm, many of the students produced poems highlighting the "varied carols" heard on the GCIT campus. We sing their praises here for exhibiting not only outstanding talent, but school spirit and pride as well.
To read a sampling of the students' poems, please click the link to Mrs. Williams' blog www.slwilliams.edublogs.org. |
Allied Health News
|
The Allied Health Academy students
of GCIT have been very excited about utilizing their newly improved Health Clinic! The clinic is now in a stand alone room and can be used by all Allied students and is big enough for the whole class to practice their newly acquired skills. Equipment has been updated and improved providing the students with a State of the Art experience. New equipment ranges from hospital beds to blood pressure cuffs, and stethoscopes. Students have been able to practice on new medical mannequins with movable arms and legs, which is a great help in practicing Range of Motion and activities of daily living. They have also been practicing taking vital signs and making occupied beds. The GCIT clinic is a wonderful part of preparing our Allied Health students for their future education and careers.
HOSA
On Saturday, February 1, 2014, AHMS and GCIT will be hosting the HOSA Regional Competition. Many vocational schools, from the southern New Jersey region, will be traveling to GCIT for this exciting event. Over a dozen of GCIT's AHMS students are preparing to compete regionally in individual and team events. Also, many of our HOSA members are volunteering, as the official Courtesy Corp, to guide all competitors throughout the day's events.
Red Cross Blood Drive
The GCIT annual American Red Cross Blood Drive took place on January 9, 2014. Students and staff donated 102 productive units of blood. Besides giving blood, many 12th grade students volunteered their time to assist with student registration, supported other students during the process and served refreshments to those who donated blood.

1st Computer Certification Exam
|
Congratulations to all of the 9th grade students in the Academy of Information Technology & Digital Communications for passing their first computer certification exam.
The students passed their first of three IC3 exams, Computing Fundamentals. They worked very hard in their first year at GCIT to pass the exam. The test includes computer hardware basics, identifying Windows operating system functions, and understanding the basics of system/utilities software and application software.
Up next, they will take the second exam, Living Online. After they pass all three exams, students will be IC3 certified and have the opportunity to use that computer literacy certification for college credit.

Parents & Students Can Subscribe to
Teacher Class Pages | Parents & Students Can Receive Homework Alerts & Students Can Submit Assignments Online
Now students and parents can subscribe to teacher class pages on the GCIT web site and receive automated emails each day as teachers post assignments to their class pages.
This feature is known as the "Student Vault." The feature is only available for teachers who have created class pages on the GCIT site.
Parents can create an account and add their children's classes to their "My Classes" list. The parent account will customize the website and allow parents to see just the classes that they subscribe to and will also send assignment notifications to the email address associated with the account.
Students can create their own account with the added bonus of being able to submit assignments online should their teacher set the assignment up that way. In order to do this, students should print out their verification code that is generated during the registration process and bring it to one of their teachers for verification. This will then allow their account to submit assignments online to teachers that allow it.
Please see the documents below to help you in creating either a student or parent account.
