Welcome Message From Superintendent
|  Dear Families and Students of Gloucester County Vocational-Technical School District: On behalf of Gloucester County Vocational-Technical School District, I would like to welcome you to our school for the 2013-2014 school year. Over the course of this summer, the administration, faculty and staff have worked to update our facilities, refine our instructional practices, and enhance our resources to support the entire student body. The Gloucester County Vocational-Technical School District is recognized throughout the state as an educational leader for providing programs that ensure that all students can reach their individual goals. Our students engage in rigorous activities that lead to high levels of achievement and skill mastery. The learning experiences in which our students participate in, allow them to be successful in college, careers, and as citizens of our communities. Finally, I would like to acknowledge and thank you for your support. As I reflect on the recent school year, please know that I genuinely appreciate and welcome the positive feedback and constructive e-mails that I have received from parents, students, and community members. Your participation in the educational process is welcomed. It is an honor to serve as your superintendent. For your convenience, all materials for our summer mailing have been provided to you on our website. A letter was mailed home, containing your child's Student ID# and PIN code so you can access the forms and obtain these documents.

Summer Reading
Please be sure that your child has completed the summer reading and is prepared to present his or her project on September 6, 2013.
Every student does not have to give an oral presentation; however, all students must bring in their assignments on that day.
Students who do not fulfill their summer reading obligation will be assigned to our Study Skills Club for freshmen or Book Club for upperclassmen during the first semester.
Drop & Add Classes
The drop/add period for classes will end September 11, 2013. No class changes will be allowed after that date. Students must make arrangements with their guidance counselor as soon as possible.
Student Portraits Individual pictures for underclassmen will be taken on September 24, 2013 in Room 1110. Makeup pictures are scheduled for November 4, 2013 in the same room. Herff Jones Photography will be at GCIT on September 12 & 13, 2013, in Room 1110, for seniors who still need their portraits taken or retaken.
School Rings A representative from Balfour will be at GCIT on September 20, 2013 during student lunches, to collect the balance due on school rings. A "Ring Breakfast" has been scheduled for October 4, 2013, for juniors to receive their rings.

Freshmen Announcements
| Freshman "Meet and Greet" August 21, 2013
For Students Only The Freshman "Meet and Greet," facilitated by SBYS, will be held on Wednesday, August 21, 2013, from 9:00am - 2:30pm.
This day will provide an opportunity for the incoming freshmen to meet their future classmates, instructors and other school personnel. The morning will be spent getting to know each other and having some fun, and the afternoon will consist of tours, question and answer sessions and a special performance by current students.
- This event is for students only
- Attendance strongly encouraged
- Breakfast and lunch will be provided
- Please wear comfortable clothes
- Drop off and pick up at the 400-wing entrance
Freshman Orientation September 3, 2013 - Gymnasium For Students and Parents
Student schedules and locker combinations will be distributed between 6:30pm and 7:00pm in our West Gymnasium.
After a brief presentation and discussion on general topics, students will have the opportunity to tour the building to locate their classrooms and lockers, while parents participate in a question and answer session.

Meet the Teachers Night
|
Please join our GCIT family on Tuesday, September 17, 2013 from 6:30-8:00pm for "Meet the Teachers" Night.
Student schedules will be available in the West Gymnasium at 6:00pm for you to experience what a day is like in the educational life of your child.
Classroom visitations will begin promptly at 6:30pm.
You will visit the three academic classes and one career cluster class of your child minus the lunch period according to their schedule. Student ambassadors will be in the hallways to help guide you.
- Parents and students enrolled in the STEP, Emergency Response/Fire Science, and Law Enforcement programs do not need to pick up their child's schedule. Classroom visitations for those programs will begin promptly at 7:30pm.
Administrators, along with counselors, will be available from 6:30-8:00pm to answer any questions in the 400-wing commons area.

GCIT's Annual Open House

Come visit GCIT during our annual open house, Thursday, October 10, 2013 from 6:00-8:00pm.
This annual event provides an opportunity for parents, guardians, family members, and the community to visit program areas and classrooms. Visitors will be able to see student demonstrations and projects.

Mandatory Parent/Student Trip Meetings |
On Wednesday, September 25, 2013, GCIT will hold its mandatory junior and senior trip meetings in the gymnasium.
If you have an emergency or scheduling issue and are unable to attend the meeting, please email Dr. Gina Mateka at gmateka@gcecnj.org by 3:00pm on September 26, 2013.

The senior trip is scheduled for June 6-11, 2014 to Disney World in Orlando, Florida.

SkillsUSA National Medals Awarded
| Students Earn Medals at SkillsUSA National Competition GCIT students, representing the State of New Jersey, received 11 medals at the 48th Annual SkillsUSA National Leadership Conference in Kansas City, Missouri.

FCCLA Students Win 8 Medals at National Conference

GCIT FCCLA students took home 2 gold medals and 6 silver medals at the 2013 Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) National Leadership Conference in Nashville, Tennessee from July 7-11, 2013.
Students were able to participate in leadership development courses, culinary demonstrations, experience fantastic keynote speakers, and compete in national competitive events.

A+ Certification
Congratulations to the following juniors and seniors of the Academy of Information Technology & Digital Communications students who earned their CompTIA A+ computer repair certification this past June: Austin Bendzynski, Frankie Echevarria, Sam Emmett, Chris Gilcrest, CJ Green, Tyler Postorivo, Ric Rey Vergara, Hunter Banks, Dan Barrett, Jon Compton, Camryn Doty, John Dwyer, Dan Ferrell, Tom Hacker, Molly Jacoby, John McConnell, Chris Niemann, and Tyler Whybrow.
The CompTIA A+ certification is the starting point for a career in IT. The exams cover installation, configuration, and maintenance of PCs, mobile devices, laptops, operating systems and printers.
Most of the students from the class are participating in a paid internship as IT technicians at both GCIT and GCSSSD.
IC3 Certification
We are proud to announce that the entire freshman IT class passed their third and final IC3 certification test, Key Applications, this past June and are now fully IC3 certified.

The Key Applications exam covers popular word processing, spreadsheet and presentation applications and the common features of all applications to help you learn faster, work smarter, and present yourself better.
The Internet and Computing Core Certification (IC3) provides students with the foundation of knowledge they need to succeed in environments that require the use of computers and the Internet.

Power Announcement
GCIT uses a notification system called Power Announcement. Power Announcement allows GCIT to send messages using email, voice, and text messaging.
Now parents can enter and maintain their own contact information and communication preferences through PowerSchool. View the Power Announcement Instructions.
PowerSchool
PowerSchool is the online system you use to view your child's grades, report cards, progress reports, schedule, and attendance. If you misplace your PowerSchool login or do not have Internet access, please call the Guidance office.
Class Pages
Many of our teachers utilize a class page to post homework assignments, handouts, class calendar, and more. You can create a parent account on our website and add your child's classes to your list. You will receive an email when teachers post assignments, including due dates.

HOSA Nationals
|
In June, GCIT's Allied Health HOSA State Champion students, Tricia Gregory, Zachary McDonald, Brandon Jones, Marissa Moore, and Alyssa Ungrue, attended the HOSA National Leadership Conference in Nashville, Tennessee. We are so proud to announce that they placed in the top ten, nationally, in their Public Service Announcement event.
All had a great time trading state pins, meeting students from all over the country and of course taking in all the warmth of the traditional southern hospitality.

School Based Youth Services
|
SBYS is a counseling agency set up in GCIT. Counselors are on staff to assist with any issue that someone might want to explore in the confidence of a trained professional.
Services are open to Gloucester County high school students.
8am - 7pm Friday 8am - 3pm
In addition, SBYS hosts many recreational and leadership trips during the school year. For more information, visit www.gcit.org/sbys or call Kim Glazer, Director of SBYS, at 856-468-1445 X 2691.
The Branch The Branch is a teen drop-in group held every Thursday at GCIT when school is in session. It is open to all Gloucester County high school teenagers. The group is for teens, facilitated by trained teen leaders with adult staff present.
Topics of discussion include communication skills, enhancing self-esteem, drug and alcohol education, stress reduction, and more. The group meets in the Media Center, 2nd floor, 200 wing. Sessions begin promptly at 3:30pm and end at 5:00pm. The first meeting of the 2013-2014 school year is scheduled for Thursday, September, 26, 2013. Red Ribbon Week and School Violence Awareness Week
We will be celebrating RRW in October, 2013. Please continue to check the website for more information.
Bystander Intervention
SBYS will continue to train GCIT students in Bystander Intervention. This valuable program encourages youth to intervene in situations where harm may be caused to another person, while keeping themselves safe. Personal safety and suicide prevention will also be discussed during the presentation.
