TOP O' THE MORNING TO YOU, FLASHERS!
Happy St. Patrick's Day...The day we all pretend to be Irish! This day celebrates the Saint who supposedly ran the snakes out of Ireland. Ya gotta love that kind of Saint! But, not so fast. In truth, he didn't because Ireland is one of only a handful of places worldwide where there are no snakes. This is according to the National Museum of Ireland in Dublin where its vast collections of fossil and other records of Irish animals has found no evidence of snakes ever existing there. Other snake-free spots include New Zealand, Iceland, Greenland, and Antarctica. Anyway, St. Patrick was a revered Christian missionary who lived during the 5th century A.D. and it's because of St. Pat that the shamrock is associated with the holiday. It is said that he used the 3 leaves of the plant to explain the Holy Trinity as being three parts in one. This simple analogy is thought to have helped non-Christians understand a fundamental element of the Christian religion. The Shamrock grows abundantly in Ireland and is regarded as the national plant. It's also why the color green is associated with this special day. Many cities that will be holding large parades today include Boston, New York, Philadelphia, New Orleans, Savannah, and other cities worldwide. Drinking is also associated with the holiday because many Catholics are Irish-American and some may be required to fast from drinking during Lent. However, they are allowed to break this fast during the St. Patrick's Day celebrations. Another custom is dying water or beer green. Chicago dies its river green for the festivities, and many bars serve green-dyed beer. Even the White House fountain is dyed green! So, Flashers, enjoy the day. You might want to patronize one our local pubs that will be serving corned beef and cabbage or shepherds pie and (of course) green beer, and here's an Irish toast you may want to pass along:
May your troubles be less and your blessings be more,
and nothing but happiness come through your door!
I can't close without wishing my Mom a very Happy 83rd Birthday today! I have introduced you FLASHERS to her in the past. She is my rock and is absolutely amazing, caring, intelligent, creative, inquisitive, supportive, inspirational, helpful, loving and all-around most wonderful person, friend, mother and grandmother! You have no idea how lucky I am! You benefit from her many attributes and may not even be aware of it. At 83 year's young she searches the web for me every week and finds some interesting, strange and helpful things to pass along to you all.....like the info in this week's Editor's Note! Click Here to give her a shout out! She'd love to hear from you and she deserves it... oh so much! I would love for all of our nearly 8,000 FLASHERS to send her a Happy Birthday wish!
Make sure to check the community calendar. There is still so much going on!!
Thanks FLASHERS!

Make sure you drink responsibly!
It should come as no surprise that St. Patrick's Day is one of the biggest days of year for recreational drinking. Often that takes place at a 'pub' which means you might find yourself faced with the dilemma of how to get home. Don't rely on pure 'luck' to get you home! No matter what...DO NOT get behind the wheel! AAA and Budweiser have paired up and offer a Tow to Go service. This service is confidential and offers a ride within a 10 mile radius to a safe location. It is free and available to both AAA members and non members. The AAA tow truck takes the vehicle and the driver home. Please share this site with anyone that you think might be in need of this service. The service will be available from March 17th - 6 a.m. on March 18th. The number to call for service is (855) 286-9246. Stay safe FLASHERS!

DO YOU KNOW
Sometimes a 'thank you' just doesn't seem adequate...
What do you think?
.
Laurie Rimon was hiking in Israel when she saw something flickering in the grass. Turns out it was an extremely rare coin; nearly 2,000 years old. There is only one other known in existence and it is displayed in the British Museum. The Roman coin is from the year 107 CE (107 AD) and bears the image of Emperor Augustus.
Rimon initially thought her find might be a toy and showed it to others in her group who thought it was legitimate. They urged her to show it to the group's guide. The guide sent a picture of it to the Israel Antiquities Authority, who promptly came out to collect the artifact.
Rimon said, "It was not easy parting with the coin. After all, it is not every day one discovers such an amazing object." But I'm sure she felt much better when they gave her a 'Certificate of Appreciation.'..... That's it!

TODAY'S CHUCKLE
This is a 'blonde joke'.
No offense intended...Just a chuckle for the week! :)
Last year I replaced all the windows in my house with those expensive, double-pane, energy-efficient kind.
Today, I got a call from the contractor who installed them. He complained that the work had been completed a year ago and I still hadn't paid for them.
Just because I'm blonde doesn't mean that I am automatically stupid. So, I told him just what his fast-talking sales guy told me last year... that these windows would PAY FOR THEMSELVES in a year.
Hellooooo? It's been a year, so they're paid for, I told him. There was only silence at the other end of the line, so I finally hung up. He never called back.
I bet he felt like an idiot.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK
CHOCOLATE MINT ICE CREAM PIE
This is a perfect dessert for St. Patrick's Day, and soooo easy! Grown-ups may want to drizzle a little Creme de Menthe liquer on top of each serving.
INGREDIENTS
Prepared Oreo Cookie Crust (usually found on the pudding aisle)
1 carton Chocolate Mint ice cream
Prepared Whipped Creme
Chocolate Syrup
DIRECTIONS
Soften ice cream and fill pie shell. Put in freezer until firm again. Before serving, 'squirt' a border of whipped cream around edge of pie and drizzle some chocolate syrup.
Note: Needless to say, this can be used for any occasion. Just experiment with different flavors of ice cream! Yum!

More than 400 enthusiastic spectators watched the final of the finals of the 2016 King of the Hill event. The open division final was one of the strongest we had in years. Robert Kowalczyk of The Moorings in Vero Beach, Lennart Jonason of John's Island in Vero Beach, Milos Vasovic of Eau Gallie Yacht Club in Melbourne and Michael Alford of Quail Valley in Vero Beach played at their highest ability and kept the crowd very entertained. Every round was very close, and the winner has been decided after a long set in the third round. Supported by a nice crowd from Quail Valley, Michael Alford won every round playing very consistent, and took the title and the King of the Hill trophy at his club - Quail Valley. Lennart Jonason and Milos Vasovic finished in a tie on the second place followed by Robert Kowalczyk on third place. Congratulations to Micheal for winning the event and to Lennart, Milos and Robert for a great night of tennis at The Moorings Club.

The Vero Beach Art Club does it again....80,000 visitors and beautiful weather was on tap last weekend for the 65th annual Under The Oaks Fine Arts and Craft show. There were over 750 artist applications from around the world. The show can only accommodate 209 artists making it an extremely competitive show. The show is ranked in the top tier of art shows, attracting the best artists.
New things were tried this year and 25% of the show were artists Vero had not seen in a while or displayed in a different medium. Piano music was provided by Sergei Novikov, a well known Russian musician, playing soft classical music that blended well with the art and the patrons. |
