Happy Easter, Flashers!
As I look forward to this special holiday, I am counting my blessings as my heart goes out to those involved in the terrible tragedy in Belgium this week. My sister Suzy and niece Amanda are housing an exchange student from Brussels. Victoria is a delightful teenager who has become an important part of our extended family, but we were all concerned about her 'real' family back in Brussels. She was able to reach her Mom by cell phone and she assured her that she and her Dad were safe, but were advised not to leave the house. The chaos in the city must be terrible as we remember so well the days after 9-11.
My editor's note this week is brief because this is a very full issue, but I just wanted to remind you how very fortunate we are to live in this little bit of paradise. Yes, Vero may have an occasional problem or two, but very minor compared to the rest of the world. This Easter I hope you will join me in counting our blessings. Please say a little prayer for the people in Brussels, and have a glorious holiday, Flashers!
Thank you~
Valerie Watkins

Bring chairs, picnic, and a radio on which to hear the announcer. That will ensure that you enjoy the exciting play by play as the horses and riders come thundering past your field-side tailgate space. Dress casually and for the weather....there are often "polo winds" across the field. Flat shoes are recommended for the 'divot stomping' at half time! Admission cost is $10 for car & driver and $5 per passenger. If you don't want to rush to get a tailgate space you can always reserve one ahead for $50 which includes up to 6 people. Make sure to check the APP to be alerted to any possible cancellation due to weather.

IT'S SPRING
TIME TO CLEAN!
This past Sunday was the first day of Spring. I love SPRING! It's time to get outside and garden, kayak, and play! The birds are nesting and the world seems to sing...It's Spring! Color is popping everywhere and the world seems cheerier!! So that's the enjoyable side of Spring. The thing I don't like about spring is 'Spring Cleaning'! Cleaning and I? Well...We aren't such great friends! We have tried to get along, truly we have, and we are amicable enough. However, I do continue to try to create a stronger bond. But success is elusive. So, I share this 'cheat sheet' with you in case you are like I am and have not conquered the clutter and 'creative display' in your own home. If you have suggestions of your own...Please share! :)

Old Vero Ice Age Sites' Archaeologist
Andy Hemmings
to speak
Saturday, April 2nd
at FREE Program at The Emerson Center
The Old Vero Ice Age Sites Committee will present Archaeologist Dr. Andy Hemmings on Saturday, April 2 at 7 p.m. at The Emerson Center. Hemmings, in this free presentation, will discuss recent findings and current thinking on the prehistoric inhabitants of the Vero site as we approach the centennial anniversary of many of the original discoveries from 1916.
"The wealth of ancient plant and animal life at the site were part of a well-watered oasis existing in an otherwise dry grassland environment during ancient Vero's Ice Age" commented Dr. Hemmings this week. "All of which would have drawn some of Florida's first people to this location."A third year of excavations at the Vero site began in February and will continue until May 1. New excavations, laboratory work, and museum collection research at the Old Vero Site continue to build the case for a Pleistocene human presence here more than 10,000 years ago. New finds regarding artifacts, animal bones, earlier work, and the geologic setting of the site will be discussed at his Emerson Center speech.

I'm Lucy and I'm looking for my forever home. I was adopted as a puppy, but sadly I developed Addison's disease and was returned. The good news is that it's not contagious, experts agree that I can live a normal, happy, healthy life with proper treatment, and HALO will supply the medicine I need for the rest of my life. Will you love and care for me?

DO YOU KNOW
THE HISTORY OF THE EASTER BUNNY
Since rabbits are known for fertility and bringing new life, they became a symbol of Easter in Europe. According to some sources, the Easter bunny first arrived in America in the 1700s with German immigrants who settled in Pennsylvania and transported their tradition of an egg-laying rabbit called "Osterhase". Their children made nests in which this creature could lay its colored eggs. Eventually, the custom spread across the U.S. and the fabled rabbit's Easter morning deliveries expanded to include chocolate and other types of candy and gifts, while decorated baskets replaced nests

RECIPE OF THE WEEK
Paula Deen's
PERFECT EASTER CARROT CAKE DESSERT
What's better than an easy carrot cake for Easter? This one uses baby food, so you don't even have to grate the carrots!
For the cake:
2 cups self-rising flour
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
2 cups granulated sugar
2 (4-ounce) jars strained carrot baby food
4 eggs
1 1/2 cups vegetable oil
For the frosting:
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, softened
1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened
1 (16-ounce) box confectioners' sugar
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Grease and flour 3 (8 or 9-inch) cake pans.
For the cake: Mix together the flour, cinnamon and sugar in a large bowl. Add the remaining ingredients and blend well with a handheld electric mixer for about 2 minutes. Pour batter into prepared pans. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until golden brown. Allow to cool in pan for 5 minutes. Invert onto lint-free dishcloth, or waxed paper, and allow to cool completely.
For the frosting:
Mix all ingredients with handheld electric mixer and blend until smooth and creamy. Frost layers, top, and sides of cooled cake.

Gigi Casapu Scholarship Awarded at Tournament Benefitting Youth Guidance Mentoring Programs
One deserving young lady was the recipient of the Gigi Casapu $1,000 scholarship at the closing night of the King of the Hill Tennis Tournament. The scholar-
ship is awarded to a teenager who has been enrolled in a Youth Guidance mentoring program, is graduating from high school, and has been accepted at a college or university. The scholarship is named to recognize the founder and tournament director of King of the Hill, Gigi Casapu.
The scholarship recipient this year was Raliyah Dawson, who is pictured receiving the $1,000 scholarship with her mother Katina Gibson and Mr. Casapu. Raliyah will be graduating from high school this spring, and has been accepted at Florida Gulf Coast University, where she will begin classes in the fall.
This was the 21st year for King of the Hill, and during that time the tournament has netted $318,000 to benefit the children involved in Youth Guidance mentoring programs. Mr. Casapu has worked tirelessly over two decades to build the King of the Hill Tournament into one of the most anticipated events of the year. Presenting an annual scholarship in his name helps to link his efforts directly to the future success of one of the hundreds of children he has helped.
