Hey FLASHERS~

I hope you all had a wonderful Easter weekend and for those on spring break... I hope it was everything you were hoping for! I headed north to Chicago last week with my sister. Though our original plan was derailed a bit...we still found it easy to enjoy our time in the 'Windy City'! My sister posted on FLASH asking for travel suggestions and we incorporated many of your suggestions into our itinerary. It made for a perfect long Easter weekend! Our fun weekend jaunt was off to a great start as we serenaded our cab driver from Africa with our rendition of Frank Sinatra's, Chicago. When all he had to say was 'You funny', I knew we had nothing on 'Old Blue Eyes!' Surprise...right?
.
We lucked out with our timing! Our visit coincided with the Macy's Flower Show! Macy's produces this show every year in different cities: New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, San francisco, and Minneapolis. It was absolutely incredible! The creativity, talent and implementation was exquisite and impeccable! The theme this year was 'America The Beautiful' and I can't imagine a more perfect tribute. The set build-outs were as impressive as a Broadway production. This show will definitely be on my agenda again next year....Who knows, maybe we will plan a FLASH trip! After thoroughly enjoying the floral creations, I have now moved the Rose Bowl Parade up on my Bucket List!
.
After the show we were in heaven with a highly recommended deep dish pizza from Lou Malnati's in front of us. It lived up to its praise and I have no doubt I will suffer some severe unsatisfied cravings until I am able to return. We went on a scavenger hunt for my father's childhood home in Evanston that included a subway ride and a multi mile hike...But we found it! :) We went to an Easter Vigil Service in a 100 year old church ...There are no words...except AMAZING!, walked the Magnificent Mile, enjoyed the view from atop the Willis Tower, ate Garrett Popcorn, walked along Navy Pier and ate more Garrett Popcorn!
.
It was a quick turn-around trip, but we fit a lot in. The moral this week? You are in life wherever you put yourself! Don't sit idle or let your mind be stagnant! Live life to your fullest potential...wherever you are! Explore! Be inquisitive! Learn new things! Have FUN! Seek help and suggestions from others, (try posting on our bulletin board) and don't forget to smell the flowers along life's way!  Get out and enjoy yourself!  You can start this weekend! There is  quite a lot going on :)
.
Enjoy Life~

FLASH FINANCIAL TIP OF THE WEEK
TAX FILING DEADLINES ARE DIFFERENT THIS YEAR

With April peekin' in this week...Tax season is just around the corner.  You catch a mini filing break this year as the deadline is April 18th instead of the dreaded 15th because of Emancipation Day, an official holiday in Washington, D.C. This holiday celebrates the freeing of slaves in the district on April 16, 1862. Because Emancipation Day falls on a Saturday this year, it will be observed on Friday, thus pushing the tax-filing deadline to Monday for most of the nation, the IRS says.

The exceptions: Maine and Massachusetts will file on the 19th because of Patriots' Day The deadline will be Tuesday, April 19, in Maine and Massachusetts, because of Patriots' Day that is celebrated in those two states commemorating the battles of Lexington and Concord in 1775.

Those states that suffered severe storms get even more time. The IRS recently announced that storm victims in Mississippi and Missouri will have until May 16 to file returns and pay any taxes due. "All workers assisting the relief activities who are affiliated with a recognized government or philanthropic organization also qualify for relief," the IRS says. For more details, see the websites of the Internal Revenue Service or the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

If you find that you need even more time to file, you can request a six-month extension until Monday, Oct. 17. You don't need to give the IRS a reason. You will be in good company as millions of people file for an extension every year. Just remember that a filing extension won't give you additional time to pay whatever you might owe.

HELP OUR FEATURED FRIENDS!
It's spring and birds are going to start nesting! They
 generally line the inside of their nest with a soft lining. This idea is a fun thing ... no matter your age! Make a 'nesting bag'  and place  it in your yard. You can include the following items:
* Clean pet hair
* Cotton
* Yarn cut no longer than 3 inches
* String
* Strips of ribbon
Once you have gathered your items, place them inside a mesh produce bag and hang it in your yard. Birds will appreciate your help and you will enjoy searching for nests in your yard that display selections from your scrap bag! What a fun way to interact with nature!

WEEKEND PROJECT
Plant An Herb Garden
It's SPRING!  That means many FLASHERS will be out in their gardens.  I just planted a new selection of fresh herbs in the 'English Garden' I started last year. It is easy to fit your fresh herbs into your landscape boarders.  Just plan for the mature size of your herbs.  For instance, rosemary can grow into a bush and look quite different from the little 4" greenery that you plant. Click Here for a very helpful guide. If you want to work in a touch of whimsy...Why not have fun painting some rocks that will help you identify your plants. You will get quite a bit of enjoyment out of growing your own herbs. Tend to them and they will produce in abundance providing an opportunity for you to share your bounty with your neighbors and friends!

FLASH TIP OF THE WEEK
Try hydrogen peroxide for whiter teeth

Hydrogen peroxide has a vast number of uses. You can use it as an effective mouthwash to rid yourself of bad breath! Because it works as a bleaching agent, you will have the added benefit of whiter teeth. That's right, Hydrogen peroxide will brighten your teeth as well as refresh your breath. Just swish for 30 seconds with a solution of 1/2 3% hydrogen peroxide and 1/2 water. The hydrogen peroxide will also kill germs. Just remember that when the peroxide is killing germs it will foam. So, don't be alarmed if there is some bubbling' going on when you are using this solution as a mouthwash. If you want to get at any bacteria in your gums, use the mouthwash solution after brushing and flossing. The peroxide/water solution can also be used in your water pic. Never ingest and do not use full strength peroxide as it is too concentrated and can cause blistering. Avoid over-using. You don't want to kill the good bacteria in your mouth too.  Smile FLASHERS and FLASH those pearly whites!

FUN AND FUNDRAISING AT HABITAT HOEDOWN

Indian River Habitat for Humanity's popular signature fundraiser, the Habitat Cracker Hoedown, was a resounding success again this year! A sold out crowd of over 300 guests, donned in western-themed outfits were in attendance on Saturday, March 5, at the Sun Aviation Hangar in Vero Beach.

Attendees enjoyed cocktails and hors d'oeuvres, followed by a scrumptious meal catered by Elizabeth D. Kennedy & Co. Live music for dancing was provided by the band Dreamer.

Guests had fun riding the mechanical bull, posing for a picture in the photo booth, playing Hoedown games and winning prizes. Attendees also browsed and placed bids on 21 packages displayed in the silent auction, in addition to the six raffle items. Real Florida cowboys exhibited their skills at roping and whip-cracking.

Habitat future and current homeowners were present to help while earning their required "sweat equity" hours needed to be a Habitat homeowner.

The event raised over $57,000 to help build, renovate and repair homes for families and individuals in need in Indian River County.
