editor's note poka-dotHello FLASHERS...
                              and .. WOO-WHO!
Its' time to celebrate! Bring out the party hats, confetti and noise blowers... This week FLASH is celebrating it's fifth anniversary. Boy oh boy has it been a cyclonic five years filled with self growth, excitement, challenges, exhaustion, creativity, networking, expansion, sleepless nights, endless fun,  brainstorming, deadlines, and did I mention a touch of weariness? Not to be confused with burnout! No WAY! I still have an abundance of ideas I want to implement!  My family members just shake their heads and laugh at me because the 'wheels on the bus may go round and round' but they rotate much more rapidly at the top of my 5'2" frame...I promise! This month I will share more thoughts on where FLASH is today, where it came from and the road I travelled to get to where we are! But... I don't want to take up all the space this week because we have another iconic celebration to blow out candles for!

Bud Adams is a classic, patriarch, genuine 'Florida Cracker' who was born on Easter morning 90 years ago! This community owes a great deal to him and I trust that the majority of you know of him. He is a lifelong friend of my husband's family and was one of my late father-in-law's best friends. My husband, Howell grew up with the Adams boys and are dear friends to this day. So much went through my mind this past Tuesday as I looked across at this 90 year old who still has a twinkle in his eye!  My mind was overwhelmed at the thought of the difference between the world that he entered 90 years ago and that which he survives today. Ponder the reality of that for a second because it is truly quite profound! Simply put he has seen it all! You are all well aware of the industrial and technological advances that have transformed life in the past 90 years, but here is something you may not know about this great man.

It was his Father, Alto Adams, who started the ranch in 1937. Alto later moved to Tallahassee when he was named to the State Supreme Court and Bud returned to work the ranch during his summers. The Adams family was in the ranching business before there were 'fence laws' and when their neighbors were indians.... Truly! Bud started to expand the ranch in 1949 after marrying his wife Dot; whom he is still married to today. It is said that necessity is the mother of invention and I guess such is the story here. Back in 1949 ranching was difficult due to screwworms that attacked cattle. There was also a problem with Malaria and flooding. That was what propelled Bud to begin experimenting with breeding. His goal was to develop a cattle breed that could survive and thrive in Florida's conditions. He  was finally successful with the creation of the Braford breed, a 60/40 cross between Hereford and Brahman breeds. Not only is the ranch surviving today, it is thriving and is one of the largest cow-calf ranches in the entire country! The Adams family has somehow managed to evolve, transform, and stay 'up' on today's trendy ways as well. Bud's granddaughter, Lee Ann Simmons will be heading to Whole Foods in Destin, FL soon to on location for the kick-off of the partnership between the Adams Ranch and Whole Foods.  The ranch will now be providing natural grass-fed beef to this popular grocer chain. So, though quite a few years have passed, the legacy that Bud Adams has created continues. Not only has his savvy business prowess been passed on genetically to the fourth generation, so has his integrity, genuine kindness, loyalty, and humbleness. There is nothing 'showy' about this man except for his humanitarian spirit, modest manner, love of nature and devotion to 'old Florida'! I know you all join me in wishing Bud Adams a very happy birthday! PLEASE watch the video at the end of today's newsletter to peer through a window at the life and legacy of this incredible man! HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO FLASH and to BUD ADAMS!

His cake was a replica of the ranch...complete with everything: cattle,  fencing, trees, pond ... even Bud's alligator!

Thank you~

In celebration of National Library Week, the Indian River County Library System is offering the "Food for Fines" program.  Patrons can bring in non-perishable food items to receive library amnesty.  All branches of the IRC Library System will be accepting items during the week of April 10-16.  All items collected during the drive will be donated to UP formally known as Harvest Food and Outreach Center.

The Food for Fines program allows those patrons who may have stopped using the library because of fines to clear up their account and take full advantage of the services the library has to offer.  The bonus of this program is that in doing so, we are helping out a great cause. APRIL  POSITIVE  PERSON
ANNA  VALENCIA  TILLERY
April, being our anniversary month, is the perfect month for FLASH to bring back a favorite feature; the 'Positive Person' feature! Spotlighting the 'positive' aspects of our fair city was always my mission with FLASH and I am thrilled to give a shout out once again to those in our community who infuse a great deal of heart into our surroundings! This month we shine the spotlight on a gal who has spread joy, enthusiasm, and kindness to so many people and organizations since she arrived to Vero Beach nearly 14 years ago. Anna Valencia Tillery is Mom to 9 year old Charlie and recently married Michael Tillery. She somehow manages to fit it 'all' in and juggles a life-plate that would come crashing down if handled by many of us! If you have attended or helped with any event in town, you have undoubtedly crossed paths with Anna! She currently works with White Glove Moving, Storage and Delivery as their 1st VP of Marketing. She has brought a tremendous humanitarian spirit to that position and has affiliated with nearly 50 different events and/or organizations. She sits on committees performing the 'behind the scenes duties' to pull off many of the incredible functions that so many of us get to enjoy. Anna was recently recognized by the Indian River Chamber as the 'Volunteer of the Year' and is pictured above on the right receiving this award. She was chosen for her years of membership at the chamber and ability to serve on a number of groups including the YPN Advisory Committee, Ambassador, Ribbon Cuttings, Industry Appreciation and a regular networker/host at a number of events throughout the years. She has also been recognized by Habitat as their outstanding volunteer.

Anna points to her son as her greatest accomplishment and when you don't see her volunteering around town, know that she is either enjoying time with her family, biking, exploring, or reading the paper .... everyday! Anna is motivated by her desire to be proud of the place she calls home. She is also inspired be nearly everyone and says you can always learn something from others. Those around you can serve as examples of how to do something better or as specimens of what not to do. Her words of advice ... "Listen and think before you speak; always remember and adjust based on your audience; whether it is one person or many."

Anna, thank you for all that you have contributed to Vero Beach and to so many of our local non profits! FLASH joins our community in giving you a well deserved 'Congrats and sincere Thank You!  You make the place we all call home a much better place! Thank you .... Thank YOU!

MEET MICHAEL BLAUBERG OF TOMOKO RIVER BASIN HONEY
KASHI SUNDAY MARKET
APRIL 10, 2016  9 AM-2 PM
11105 Roseland Road, Sebastian, FL 32958
If you want to hear a fascinating story about bees, sit and talk with Michael Blauberg, a third generation beekeeper who dates his expertise in beekeeping from both his father and Australian grandfather. Michael's honey comes out of the Tomoko River Basin, north of Ormond Beach, where exotic florals abundantly grow to which the bees are attracted.  Unlike other honey producers, Michael only produces what they term mono-floral honey which means the honey is individually harvested from either swamp lilies, Brazilian red pepper, Spanish needle flowers, or other equally exquisite florals and then personally tested for their unique quality.  To top it off, Michael only gives his bees filtered water to drink from so that the honeys retain their purity. Fresh and wonderful, there is a harvest every 28 days from one of these florals.
While we have heard about sommeliers who taste wine for their purity, Michael tells me that he and his wife can not only taste honey but tell what floral it originated from with a 90% surety of the floral.
And what about the health benefits of these honeys? Lighter honeys are good for sinuses because of its extremely high pollen and Vitamin C count. Darker honey is good for muscles and joints and have anti-inflammatory healing properties.
If you wish to speak to Michael and ask about shipping, you can contact him at 386-451-8782. If you wish an immediate response, you can also text him.

FLASH TIP OF THE WEEK

Last week we shared how hydrogen peroxide can work as a mouth wash and teeth whitener. This week we will share how it can help whiten yellowed linens.  Try tis on curtains, napkins or tablecloths that have yellowed over time.  Wipe the yellowed areas down with hydrogen peroxide.  Alternately, just throw them in the wash with the rest of your whites.

The Boys and Girls Club Partners with Vero Beach Power Squadron

Imagine the excitement for many youth that have never boated or fished before as they reel in their first fish. The annual Boys and Girls Fishing Day is a partnership between the Boys and Girls Club and the Vero Beach Power Squadron(VBPS). On Saturday March 19 at 8 am, captains arrived at the Power Squadron building to take the youth boating and fishing. The biggest fish was a 23" sting ray, the smallest fish was a 2" pinfish.

Some basic boating information was provided in the classroom first and each child put on a PFD and safety goggles. After returning to land, members of the VBPS cooked and served hot dogs and hamburgers to the hungry youth.

The mission of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Indian River County is to inspire and enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible, and caring citizens.
