Hello There FLASHERS!
Last week I told you that FLASH was turning 5 and Bud Adams turned 90. I also mentioned how it's been a fun five years with a lot of sleepless nights. Perhaps that weariness is the reason I miscalculated! (ha ha) It's our 6th year as one of our first FLASH subscribers so kindly pointed out. Boy...Time is flying faster than I thought ... I lost an entire year!
Here is a bit of history that I promised last week on the creation of FLASH. I started FLASH when my husband and I decided to move to Vero from Miami. I was so involved in Miami and I was afraid that I would be bored without something to keep me busy here! Booyah! Took care of that! I haven't been bored for one second. A friend in Miami had recently started an email that was strictly like our bulletin board. It served to connect subscribers for referrals, ideas, support, etc. It took off in Miami and I thought if it could take off there, it would certainly work in a smaller city like Vero. Being a 'newbie' I thought I could learn a lot about my new 'home' by creating a similar newsletter. While I worked tirelessly to build a subscriber base...not an easy task since I knew no one in Vero... I filled in the 'FLASH bulletin board newsletter ' with things going on in town. Much to my dismay, that was what you ALL loved! I say dismay because I didn't know this town, I didn't know what was going on, I didn't know the movers and shakers, to gather the info I had to dig and research. This was far more difficult than copying and pasting a bulletin board request that I would find in my inbox; not to mention I felt like a complete fraud for quite a while. Here I was kinda wearing a hat similar to a chamber of commerce, telling those in the community, even natives, what was going on in 'their' town. To validate and convince myself I was 'qualified' for my newly evolved position I would tell those I met that my husband was from Ft. Pierce and that my family had built a home in SummerPlace in the 70's and I had been coming here for 40+ years. See I did belong! :)
Well, my bulletin board concept never took off the way I wanted it to. A setback?... kinda...But not really! I remember thinking ... "WOW?" everyone loves the 'what's going on in town' fillers. I also remember exactly where I was on 95 during one of my 3 hour commutes when the idea of a printed calendar popped into my mind. But, I wasn't making any money from my new venture and couldn't warrant paying for a graphic designer. So, without any knowledge of graphic design or any such program software, some would say it was just like me to jump in and decide this too was something I could tackle. I taught myself Adobe Illustrator by watching videos on Lynda.com. (See this week's Tech Tip) I'm absolutely certain that my method would boggle the mind of many...okay everyone! But...it works for me!
Why am I blowing my cover now? Because those who have followed me all of these years hopefully know one thing about me; I focus on the positive! We humans are incredible creatures, intricately designed by God and we can accomplish incredible things if we don't give up! There are so many times that I felt that I 'hit a wall' and I did! But I continued to chisel away! I certainly ran into my share of naysayers...but I would not allow them the power to discourage me! I was the FLASH version of the 'Unsinkable Mollie Brown!' I resolved to stick to my morals and my standards which had never let me down. I was raised with the belief that you treat others the way you want to be treated, always be willing to help others, only in giving the best of yourself can you expect the best from others, and 'NICE' can 'WIN'! I also believe that there are no accidents when you infuse optimism! Many setbacks can be the tastiest fodder for disaster...BUT...DON'T go there!! Stay positive and optimistic and know that stumbling blocks that you tumble over can be used as a step up! Pick up that block and position it to help you over the next hurdle or at least use it as a step up to peer through the window at success! If we all help each other...we can get wherever we want to go! Don't ever be afraid of reinventing yourself or to try something new! You'll never know what you can accomplish unless you try! Thanks for hanging with me for all of these years, FLASHERS! You'll never know the amount of inspiration you provide! ;)
Thank you~
Valerie Watkins

I'm Reesie, and I'm your guy! The yellow smudge on the side of my nose isn't the only unusual fact about me. Golden eye, stripes on the sides of my face and a taste for jalapenos make me a very interesting feline. I'm friendly, chatty, love attention but please, NO DOGS!

YOUR IRS TAX RETURN
IS NOT DUE TOMORROW!
If you missed the post a couple of weeks ago...Good news, procrastinators! You get three extra days to gather your paperwork
and file your federal tax return. The tax deadline is April 18th instead of the 15th this year because Washington DC usually celebrates Emancipation Day on the 16th. (The day President Abraham Lincoln signed into law a bill ending slavery in Washington, D.C.) Since April 16 falls on a Saturday in 2016, Emancipation Day will be celebrated on April 15.......And Tax Day will be pushed back to April 18! What does this mean?... There's still time to dig up your paperwork and look for new deductions. Here are a few:
* You can deduct your medical expenses (including dental) that are more than 10% of your
adjusted gross income. For those 65 or older the AGI threshold is 7.5% (This exception
applies through 12-31-2016)
* If you own your own business you can:
Write of the cost of your car lease, a room in your home if you use it as your main office, (you
will need proper proof)
* Diet Costs and/or plan if it is prescribed by a doctor.
If you still need more time you can file for it and the extension. Just remember your extension as an extension to file... Not to pay.

You can click here for an easy 'how to' guide on how to add molding. You get a big impact for relatively little cost! Take a before and after picture and send it to us! :) We love seeing what our FLASHERS have created!

Lynda.com is an online education company that offers video courses on many different programs. It is a fantastic and convenient way to learn something new or gain additional skills. I mentioned in my editor's note that I had no knowledge on how to use any design program. I taught myself Adobe Illustrator from lynda.com. It only cost $25 a month and you can view as many videos as you'd like. The videos are categorized and you can select the one that fits your knowledge base from beginners to advanced. They also range in length from 10 minutes to one hour. Lynda.com offers a free trial and I
highly suggest you check it out. Some software they offer instruction on are: Excel, Word Press, Photoshop, Illustrator, HTML Training, Quickbooks, InDesign and more. Click Here to explore the site and view video tutorials that are taught by industry experts.

DID YOU KNOW? Today is the 104th Anniversary of Titanic Disaster.
The Titanic hit an iceberg in Newfoundland on April 14, 2012 at 11:40 P.M. and sunk the following morning. The ship cost $7.5 million to build and surprisingly had many of the amenities of present day cruise ships. It featured a swimming pool, a gymnasium, a squash court, and a Turkish bath and two separate libraries - one for first-class passengers, and one for second class. The ship was equipped to carry 64 lifeboats, but to keep from cluttering the decks, it only carried 20. Including crew members, there were 2,228 people on board and over half (1,517) of them drowned. To put that number in perspective, 2,043 were killed in the Pearl Harbour attack and 2,996 on 9/11.

TODAY'S CHUCKLE
A French man nearly got away with stealing a number of paintings from the Louvre.
However, after planning the robbery and getting in and out and past security, he was captured only three blocks away when his van ran out of gas.
When asked how he could mastermind such a crime and then make such an obvious error, he replied, "I had no Monet to buy Degas to make the Van Gogh."

RECIPE OF THE WEEK
MENU AND RECIPES FROM THE TITANIC
Since this is the anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, I thought it might be interesting to know more about the setting on that tragic night. Remember, the ship hit the iceberg shortly before midnight, so a majority of the passengers had just finished a gourmet meal and were still in the dining room dancing to the orchestra and enjoying the merriment of this maiden voyage when suddenly disaster struck. If you would like to read more about that evening and try some of the recipes for the meal, Click here. But here is one I thought sounded yummy!
MINTED GREEN PEAS TIMBALES
15 ml (1 tbsp) salt
1 l (4 cups) peas, fresh or frozen
40 ml (2 1/2 tbsp) chopped fresh mint or (1 tsp) dried
1 ml (1/4 tsp) granulated sugar
1 ml (1/4 tsp) pepper
3 egg whites
125 ml (1/2 cup) whipping cream
Fresh mint sprigs
Sour cream or crème fraîche
In large saucepan of boiling water, dissolve all but 1 ml (1/4 tsp) of salt. Add peas and blanch for two minutes. Drain and rinse under cold water until chilled through. Drain well.
Place peas, mint, sugar, remaining salt and pepper in blender or food processor. Purée until very smooth. With motor running, add egg whites one at a time. Pour in cream and blend until well combined.
Divide pea mixture among 6 greased 125 ml (1/2 cup) ramekins or custard cups lined with parchment rounds. Place ramekins in baking pan, pouring in enough water to come halfway up sides of dishes. Cover with foil, and using sharp knife, make vent holes at random intervals. Bake in 350 F oven for about 30 minutes until tester inserted into centre of timbales comes out clean. Let rest for two to three minutes. Run knife around edge of each dish and turn timbales out onto warm plates. Remove parchment rounds. Garnish with sprig of mint and dollop of sour cream. Makes 6 servings.
