HAPPY THURSDAY FLASHERS!

Hello flashers first I want to thank those of you who took the time to send an email my way last week . It looks like the craziness of the past few weeks is finally coming to an end. One FLASHER sent me an email with two words... '
Since she works at Indian River State College and since I had never heard of this, I at first thought it was a science email gone awry.  Then I thought, let me do a search and see if it was intended for me. Indeed it was and although I don't follow astrology, I found it a fun and interesting read.  For those who have also been experiencing some wacky situations of late; take a look. It gives us all something to blame for all of the craziness. With the passage of time it seems we will be released from this astrological grip and can move forward to enjoy the relaxed and carefree days of summer...at least until August 30th....when we can all cry out together..."it's baaack!"

But for now enjoy your morning mo-jo and your issue of FLASH.  You will find some sizzling summer features that will have you daydreaming about backyard BBQ's, summer family fun, boating, get-aways and vacations...Hawaii?  Well, FLASH to the rescue again. You do not have to travel all the way to Hawaii. Instead you can purchase a ticket to the Youth Guidance Luau on June 9th. FLASH will have a table and I hope to see a lot of fellow FLASHERS at this fun event.  Youth Guidance offers such an incredible service to the youth in our community and I hope we can all get behind their efforts with our support!

Thank you~

NON PROFIT SPOTLIGHT
INDIAN RIVER EQUESTRIAN FOUNDATION

Vero Beach is a piece of paradise with a great big heart!  Most of us are well aware of the numerous 'high-profile' non profits that provide such wonderful services to our community. My goal during the summer months is to draw attention to some of the 'less known' non profits that are also working incredibly hard behind the scenes and doing such great things. This month I introduce you to The Indian River Equestrian Foundation that not only rescues horses (and other animals) but then works and trains these animals to then provide therapy to those in need. It is a definite win-win situation.

Kelly A. Walker, Founder and President of IREF, has operated Vero Equine Riding Academy for the last 10 years and has seen first-hand the positive effects that working with animals has on people. "I had to do something for the community and the horses," says Walker speaking about the reason she started the Foundation. Whether the horses are rescued from the race tracks on their way to the slaughter house or from owners that are no longer able to provide for them, Kelly nurses these animals back to health and they in return provide therapy and education to adults, children and the elderly.

Currently IREF is working with Youth Guidance, Hibiscus House Children's Center, Goodwill, Daisy Hope, Milestone and area elderly facilities. Soon they will also be offering programs to benefit our veterans.  The benefits of animal therapy is well documented and can help develop self-esteem, self confidence, patience, and develop the mind, body and soul.

Without the funds necessary to support a paid staff or assistant, Kelly works endlessly with a large number of volunteers and a devoted mother, to run the foundation. The care and medical cost of horses and other animals is not an inexpensive endeavor. Without grants, events and community funding this service would not be possible.  The foundation recently received a $1,000 grant from Wal-Mart/Sams to support its mission. They have two fund raisers coming up on  June 1st at Chili's from 4:00-11:00 and
June 14th at Chipotle from 5:00-9:00. Mention Indian River Equestrian Foundation and Chili's will donate 10% of your total bill to the foundation and Chipotle will donate 50%.

For further information or to volunteer; click here. To make a greatly appreciated donation of any amount; click here. All FLASHERS are also invited to visit the facility located at 8130 8th Street in Vero Beach. Kelly allows for volunteers to participate in a volunteer for free riding. Call 772.643.1984

THE CHICK-FIL-A SONG
The long wait is over and you no longer have to travel to Palm Beach for your Chic-fil-a fix. Over one hundred showed up yesterday to 'camp-out' for a chance to win free chick-fil-a for a year!  Those die-hard Chick fil-A fans were invited to 'walk' through the drive through to order a free dinner. To keep the campers entertained there were games, competitions and a live DJ.  Chick-fil-A sure knows how to throw a grand opening bash! I heard the song I have linked above when I stopped by the camp out.  If you are a Chick-fil-A fan...you are going to love it and will find it quite funny. Enjoy some chicken biscuits and honey! YUM!

Beachsiders Toastmasters Offers
"Cure" for
Fear of Public Speaking

One of Florida's top-rated Toastmasters Clubs has returned to its roots on Vero's Beach after a hiatus at the Indian River College Library. Beachsiders Toastmasters now meets each Thursday from 12 noon to 1 PM in Suite 304 at 2801 Ocean  Drive.

Since its founding in 2004, Beachsiders Toastmasters has consistently earned high marks, including nine consecutive years as a President's Distinguished Club.   According to  Beachsiders President Allura Adelson, few people join Toastmasters clubs with the initial goal of becoming professional speakers, although a significant  number do turn pro. There are hundreds of  Toastmasters members throughout the world who have found their true calling at the lectern.  Beachsiders has recently produced two highly skilled professional speakers in Rebecca Carswell and Harry J. Getzov.   Both Getzov and Carswell  are published authors as are founding member Lydia Silvestry and Carrie Deleon.

The Toastmasters training program is for everyone who wants to become a better speaker and listener, for business or personal betterment, Adelson believes.   There is also ample evidence that good communications skills can fuel successful careers in the business world. Likewise, lack of the ability to communicate may bar the ladder to success.  We invite the community to join us at one of our meetings.

 FLASH TIPS THIS WEEK

With summer comes mosquitoes! Here is a tip that will have you feeling a little better when the buzzz turns to a bite...

Get out the glue stick and rub it on the bite immediately. It will take the itch away and it won't come back!

RECIPE OF THE WEEK

Fish Tacos
as seen on scrumpdillyicious
Serves 4

1 lb mahi mahi, cut into 4 fillets
4 soft flour tortillas
1/2 tsp Cajun seasoning
Kosher salt and black pepper, to taste
1 lime, sliced
1 bunch of chives, finely chopped for garnish
1 avocado, peeled and sliced, optional

Aioli:
1 egg yolk
1/3 cup olive oil
1 clove garlic, crushed
1 tsp Dijon mustard
1 tbsp fresh lime juice
2 tsp chopped chipotle chiles in adobo

Coleslaw:
1 cup each julienned carrots, jicama and purple cabbage
1/2 cup cilantro, chopped
1/2 medium onion, diced
2 cloves garlic, crushed and diced
1/2 cup rice wine vinegar
2 tbsp sesame oil
1/2 tsp curry powder
1 tbsp Dijon mustard

Place the egg yolk in a small bowl or food processor, and slowly whisk in the olive oil until it becomes a mayonnaise-like consistency. Add the Dijon, chopped chipotle, garlic and juice from a quarter of a lime, and mix to combine. Transfer to a bowl or squeeze bottle, and refrigerate until needed.

Toss all of the cole slaw ingredients together in a large bowl, and adjust seasoning to taste.

Season the fish with a pinch of salt and black pepper and a little Cajun seasoning. Grill the fish outdoors or pan-sear it in a large skillet. Warm the flour tacos in a pan or griddle. To serve, spoon 1/4 cup of crunchy coleslaw on each taco and top with a portion of cooked mahi mahi and a slice or two of avocado, if you like. Drizzle with a little aioli on top and garnish with a slice of lime and a flurry of chopped chives.

HELP FOR FAMILY WHO LOST HOME AND BELONGINGS IN HOUSE FIRE
FROM: SEBASTIAN ELKS
Last Friday, Reinhart and Shelly Anderson lost their home and everything in it in  a house fire. They were able to get out unhurt with only the bedclothes they were wearing.   Their fellow Elk members are organizing a few fundraisers and drives to help them out.

Saturday, 5/29 from 5:30 to 8:30 pm.  Franks and hamburgers will be available for purchase.  'Papa' Pete and Little Debbi will be providing the music.  There will be numerous baskets raffled, a cake auction, and 50/50, the proceeds of which will go to the family.

Monday, May 30th at the annual Memorial Day picnic held by the lodge, from Noon until 4 pm, all profits from the fun activities will go to the family.

Both of these activities are open to the public.

Cash donations, clothes, deodorant, shampoo, toothbrushes, tooth paste, brushes, combs, razors, etc.  can be dropped at the lodge. Anything that you feel they would be able to use (which is just about everything).

Three local schools received grants from the Roller Skating Foundation in April. According to Tim Hunter, co-owner of Skate Factory who presented the checks, Master's Academy, North County Charter School, and Rosewood Magnet are the only schools in the state of Florida to receive the grants. Rosewood Magnet will use their grant money to purchase much-needed PE equipment, such as beaded jump ropes and an air pump. Master's Academy will be using their funds to purchase new fitness training equipment. And North County Charter School will use the money to help fund sunshades for the playground.

Steady hands were at the helm last Sunday, May 22nd as high school sailors from the Youth Sailing Foundation of Indian River County captured 1st and 2nd place wins in the 420 class at the Treasure Coast Sailing Foundation's 2016 Spring Regatta in Fort Pierce. Cody Lanier and crew Holly Gandolfo snagged the first place win, with Brendan Williams and crew Nicholas Davidson right behind them for the second. The high school crews competed against five other 420 class teams.

Vero Knights of Columbus Council 5629 presented checks to The Arc of IRC and Vero Beach Boy Scout Troop 550.  Each check was for $4,700.  These funds were raised by Council 5629 members during their recent annual Campaign for Children with Disabilities.

Each year many of the local merchants allow Knight volunteers to stand outside their doors asking for these donations while giving out Tootsie Rolls - Kudos to these merchants and all who contributed.  These helped The K of C Council 5629 to support this year the fine work of The ARC of IRC and Boy Scout Troop 550 (which is comprised of children with Special Needs).
