HAPPY THURSDAY FLASHERS!
Oh Boy...It's June and that means we will be half way through 2016 when the end of the month arrives. Incredible! How that happened; I just don't know! But, I do know that June is the month for weddings, outdoor get-togethers, beach days, and road trips. Throughout the month we will be touching on all of the above which we can now enjoy to the fullest because during June we seem to be able to take a step back, catch our breath and say ahhh... :) You will find some fun features in this issue that will hopefully give you ideas on how to enrich your summer days!

There are quite a few fun days in June. June 11 is the Belmont Stakes and although we do not have a horse in the running for a Triple Crown win this year...It is still a great excuse to gather friends and throw a party! June 12 - 18 is Flag Week and it was 100 years ago that Woodrow Wilson proclaimed June 14 as FLAG Day. Everyone is encouraged to fly the flag with great pride. Next week we go over 'Flag Etiquette'.'  June 19th is a day that we will all be giving 'shout outs' to dads everywhere .... because it's Father's Day! Love you Dads! And now for a couple of those 'bit different' recognition days... June 24th is 'take your dog to work day'. It was established to recognize the companionship of our four-legged friends and to encourage pet adoption. June 25 is The Great American Backyard Campout. The national Wildlife Federation encourages everyone, regardless of age, to get out and camp out.

Call me crazy...many of my friends do...But I LOVE to camp out! So, I might just find a spot and head out with my tent.  When I graduated from college my BFF and I went on a bike trip through New England. We had an absolute BLAST on our adventure and we mixed camping with stays at some of the 'nicest' hotels. Our unforgettable journey began with us guiding our bikes through the lobby at the Waldorf Astoria in New York because the front desk told us we would have no bikes if we left them locked on the car rack. We celebrated the 4th of July on the Esplanade along the banks of the Charles. Listening to the Boston  Pops in Boston on the 4th....Check that one off on the bucket list.  We peddled from Boston to Hampton Beach caught a ferry to Nantucket. We looped back to the car we left in Boston and drove to Maine where we jumped back on our bikes for our final ride to Booth Bay! I have a lifetime of memories from that trip. That is where I experienced the 'fun' of camping.  Up to that point I had only 'camped out' as a child in our backyard play house for the night.  Scary?...You betcha! Not sure we actually ever made it through the night. HA!

Never stop actually 'living' life FLASHERS! Make it an adventure ... It can sure be FUN!... And if you have been a FLASHER for a while, you know what I say about fun...it IS the BEST thing to have!

ENJOY~

FUN RELAYS For Summer Gatherings, Family Reunions  & 4th of July
The competitive side of me just loves relay games. They always conjure laughter and team work while providing active engagement for all guests. It definitely will be the linchpin for a memorable party. This link will show you five different relays that you may not have heard of and some are easy to plan. for Add them to a few of the 'classic' relays such as egg on a spoon relay, human wheelbarrow, water balloon distance toss, etc. and you have the recipe for spectacular memory building. If you have a pool, you might consider a coin dive for the kids. This was always one of my favorites as a child. Get rolls of pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters and toss them into the pool. Reserve and restrict the shallow end and steps for the younger party goers and the deep end for the older kids. Trust me...The kids love this one! :) Fun ... Fun ... FUN! Enjoy your summer FLASHERS and plan now to celebrate it actively.

AN ANONYMOUS POSITIVE PERSON
As I sat at the Memorial Service this past Monday on our incredible Veterans Memorial  Island, I heard the keynote speaker talk of how the silent majority in today's world is giving mind-boggling power to the VERY vocal minority by simply doing nothing. It reminded me of a principle my mom instilled in me ... All it takes for evil to prevail is for good men and women to do nothing. This woman did something and my 'pollyanna' outlook has me believing she changed the way these girls will act  in the future. She dropped a pebble and we can only imagine the ripple effect. Drop your pebbles, FLASHERS! ripple...ripple...ripple!

            SOME DIFFERENT HURRICANE TIPS
Most of us who have lived in Florida for awhile are familiar with what to do in the event of a hurricane. The obvious things on your check list are to have canned food, flashlights, batteries, etc.
However, the   website below has more unusual tips. One good idea is to video your home and possessions before a storm in case you have to file an insurance claim for damage. And remember 'cash is king' in the event of a power outage. To learn more, Click Here.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK
(Refreshing Summer Cocktails)

WINE 'COCKTAILS'
A Wine Spritzer or Cooler is a refreshing cocktail to have during the summer. It's light, delicate, and not as heavy as liquor. It's even better when you have a lot of different recipes from which to choose, so here are a few. It's fun to garnish with a straw or stirrer with fresh fruit or a tiny paper umbrella!

POOR MAN'S CHAMPAGNE
This was my grandfather's drink of choice. In a tall glass of ice, fill 1/2 with white wine and 1/2 with club soda. For a sweeter version use Ginger-ale or Sprite. (Diet variety is okey.) Garnish with a strawberry on a pic. Try it with red wine if you prefer.

FRUIT JUICE SPRITZER
Mix 1/2 juice, 1/2 white wine, and a dash of club soda or Sprite and pour over ice. Try this with orange juice, cranberry juice, apple juice or lemonade. Garnish with appropriate fruit.

WINE PINA COLADA
Mix in a blender: 1 part white wine, 1/2 part coconut cream, 1 part pineapple sherbet. Garnish with a fresh pineapple wedge.

SPARKLING ROSE' SANGRIA
(Serves 4 to 6)
2 cups strawberries, hulled and sliced
1 Valencia orange, sliced into thin rounds
1 lemon, sliced into thin rounds
1 bottle dry, sparkling rosť (750 mL)

3 tablespoons simple syrup
2 cup sparkling water

INSTRUCTIONS
  1. In a large pitcher, combine the strawberries and orange and lemon slices. Use the end of a wooden spoon to muddle the fruit a bit.
  2. In a small glass combine the brandy and the simple syrup. Pour this and the bottle of rosť wine over the fruit. Chill for at least an hour, or longer if you have it. Just before serving, stir in the sparkling water.
  3. Spoon some of the fruit into glasses, pour in the liquid, garnish, and serve.
  4. Mission accomplished!

We Bid A Fond Farewell!

I received a request  from two individuals asking if FLASH would feature, James Sammons. How could I not? Mr. Sammons has impacted so many lives for 35+ years. Now that is service, FLASHERS!

You see, James Sammons has been the band director at Vero Beach High School and has dedicated himself to our children all this time. He has decided to retire at the end of this school year and therefore only has a few more days in a surrounding that has become a second home. He is leaving while at the top of his game and has developed an incredible program at our local high school.  Mr. Sammons has conducted concert bands that have consecutively received Superior ratings at State for the past 30 consecutive years. WOW! The VBHS Band also received the prestigious Otto Krashaar Award for a perfect sweep of Superior ratings at the Florida Bandmaster's Association District Marching, District Concert, and State Music Performance Assessment. VBHS is the only school band program on the Treasure Coast to achieve this honor. James Sammons, quite deservingly, has been inducted into the American Bandmaster's Association.

Passing the director's baton is not going to be easy and James Sammons is going to be greatly missed.   FLASH is honored to recognize him today and we give hime a huge 'shout out' of sincere appreciation! To borrow a line from 'Mary Poppins'...Thank you Mr. Sammons for 'molding our young breed' for over 35 years! Your impact and spirit will not be forgotten!

Pictured here is 04 Lieutenant Commander Alfred Lee Keller. I accidentally missed the email from Barbara Haven with the information on her son-in law who is currently serving in the Navy. My oversight prevented me from including him in our special Memorial Day issue. I am honored to spotlight him this week.
