HAPPY THURSDAY FLASHERS!

Yesterday I was listening to the Today Show and they reported that a recent study indicates that when it comes to summer vacations, the most enjoyable component is actually in planning and anticipating the trip rather than the get-away itself. I beg to differ! I am not big on planning and I love to leave that to someone else. I much prefer just getting on the road! Like the country song goes...'Heads Carolina ~ Tails California' that is far more my style; leave the destination to the flip of a coin! You planners who were polled in the above study and who derive enjoyment from the anticipation and planning are now reading this in disbelief. Not to worry...I will regain your respect when I tell you that I find the 'anticipation' of the fruit of the season far more enjoyable than the 'year round' fruit we have available today.

When I was growing up. we would eagerly wait for the month of May because that was 'watermelon season.' Mom always brought a cold one to the end-of-the-year class party. We'd eat the wedges with our hands and have seed spitting contests on the playground. We enjoyed this summertime fruit again on Memorial Day weekend when there would always be new galvanized garbage cans filled with ice and water serving as the best watermelon coolers ever! Now it seems we have access year-round to all types of fruit and vegetables that come not only from our country, but other parts of the world as well. It's wonderful, isn't it?..... or is it?  I think that having access to something 24-7 reduces the enjoyment.  As that old adage goes..."Absence makes the heart grow fonder!" I also believe that fruit brought to us from far away places just doesn't taste the same. I don't know whether it's because they are picked too green in order to survive shipping or whether it's different varieties, but it's just not as good.

So, there you have it.  I like the anticipation of a fresh fruit season and the actual vacation experience over the anticipation of the get-away. If you are like me,  I hope you all are taking advantage of the plentiful supply of produce grown in Florida and nearby states right now. You can find lots of the tasty home-grown produce at our weekend farmers' markets.  If you've never been, check them out. Mangoes are arriving! That's one of the things I miss the most about our home in Miami. We lived on an acre and my husband planted many different varieties that produced mangoes all summer long; each with a unique flavor! We also had a peach tree, avocado, key lime, orange, dragon fruit and more! But nothing compared to that 'first' mango of the season. Yummm! I miss that terribly since moving to Vero. :(  I did plant a Keitt variety in our yard here and I had been nurturing 3 mangos! Yep...HAD! I'm down to two because I looked out the other day and my dog had pulled the lower one off and was enjoying what was going to be my first mango of the season! Just my luck! Guess Tuck misses our prolific mango trees too! He always enjoyed his fare share because we just couldn't keep up with the harvest. I am 'anticipating' my first sweet and juicy peach when my husband returns from our Georgia farm this weekend.  That comes in a close second place. Anyway, Flashers, summer is here and it's harvest time in our neck of the woods. Click Here for a website that shows the typical harvest time for Florida crops and Click Here for a listing of the U-Pic farms and orchards in Florida. Grab a coin and toss it and head to the U-pic fields close to your destination. Enjoy the anticipation, FLASHERS!

Thank you~

Blitz (black-and-white) came to the shelter a couple ofyears ago from a hoarding situation. He had become nervous and terribly shy, but came out of his shell when he met and started playing with Cole, who had been there even longer. They would love to find a home together where they can continue in their friendship..

CRAFT IDEA OF THE WEEK
.
Though this isn't really a 'craft' the preppy gal inside of me loves a monogram and can figure out a way to turn it into a craft. You can use these stickers to embellish not only envelopes, but notebooks, boxes, computer cases, mirrors and more. You could even double side it with your contact info, laminate it and create a luggage just in time for summer travels.

SUMMERTIME TIP
Natural Mosquito Repellent...
And Yet So Pretty!
Summertime is here, which means we will be spending more time outdoors. Unfortunately, it also means mosquitoes and bug bites. I found this tip that you might want to try at your next soiree!
- 4 mason jars (or any glass jar)
- Fill jars with water
- 10 drops each per jar - Cedarwood, Lavender,
Lemon oils (these oils help repel mosquitoes)
- 2 fresh sliced lemons
- 2 fresh sliced limes
- 8 sprigs fresh rosemary
- Floating tea light candles

Because it is summer and travel is on the list of things to do...We bring you information on airport apps that will hopefully make your travel through the airport more enjoyable. The three apps that have recently been reviewed are MiFlight, Fleet, and My TSA.

Miflight is worth the download and is crowd sourced info from those already in line at TSA check points. Those in line type in how long of a wait you can expect so the information is timely and accurate. Because it is easy to check wait times at a possible other TSA check point in the same terminal, this App can also redirect you.

Fleet is really easy to use with accurate information. You type in your flight info and it tells you how busy lines are. Once you are through the lines it also tells you your exact gate, the exact time that you need to be at the gate, alerts you as to any gate changes and when your flight is leaving. It also has info on the shops that are close by along with all of the restaurants.

My TSA is not worth the download. The information is not accurate and the updates can have lag times of over 3 hours. HMMM...My TSA? Lucky us!

CELEBRITY PROM PICTURES

Yep! That's Jimmy Fallon. Locally, school is out and the Senior Proms are now just a memory. I just wonder if today's prom-goers will someday look back at those prom pics with pride or embarrassment. Some of the celebrities in this slideshow look great, but others probably have regrets. It's hard to make Brad Pitt and George Clooney look bad, but Ellen DeGeneres - oh my! Click Here to view.
