editor's note poka-dot

WOW!  What a frightening and sad week it has been. Our neighboring city of Orlando has experienced one unfortunate and disastrous event after another.  I am sure we have all been shocked and saddened. One of the victims of the terrorist attack was the brother of a classmate of my daughter, Allie. Allie played on the school's JV, Varsity, and club soccer teams with Jerry Wright's sister for years! He was an avid attendee at the games; always cheering the girls on. I can now say that I personally know a victim of a terrorist attack. It is an unsettling, helpless, and mournful group to be a part of and I wish I could rescind my membership.  Such a random, vicious, and savage act that leaves lives torn apart.  I will never comprehend such acts! Then my heart was ripped again when I woke to news of the two-year-old being snatched by an alligator during what was meant to be an incredible family vacation. Can't imagine that on so many different levels. Then there is the grief felt by the family and friends of Christina Grimmie that we came to know through her time on The Voice. I don't recall such sadness with the intent to start your Thursday in a depressing way, but rather to redirect our thoughts and our actions.

This Sunday is Father's Day. I can't think of a better reason to get the family together. Often our every-day lives and activities interfere with such gatherings because we 'just can't squeeze it in.' We are just 'too busy'! Well FLASHERS, if this past week doesn't cause us to rethink our priority list then I fear almost nothing will. You can't get back missed moments and we just truly never know when a moment will be lost forever! So, turn your moments into memories that will make you smile rather than regret actions that were contemplated, yet never happened.

We can all use a dose of kindness this week. While you browse this week's issue, Click here to listen to Tim Mcgraw's new song, 'Always Stay Humble and Kind'. He wrote it for his daughter Gracie as she was heading off to college. I love it! Here is an interview with Tim Mcgraw on how it almost didn't make it onto his latest album because he couldn't get through it without breaking down.

 KNOW YOUR FISH!

The fish pictured here is a Dolphin, known on restaurant menus as Mahi-Mahi. Have you ever wondered why the change to Mahi-Mahi? Well, it is to identify this type of dolphin so it is not confused with those other playful Dolphin mammals like Flipper; which look nothing like this. Last week was National Fishing Week. But with summer here, there is no better time to get out on the water or even fish off a dock.  My brother-in-law took my daughter and me fishing in St. Lucie Village last weekend. We caught mutton snapper, a big sheephead, and even a smaller grouper that we released. If you're new to fishing in Florida or if your kids are becoming interested in the sport, there's no better place to pick up some tips than Florida's Fish and Wildlife Commission's (FWC) website. You can learn rules and regulations, as well as how to identify the many different species in Florida waters.

PREVENTING AGE RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION
Science has done a wonderful job of keeping us alive longer, but the older we get, the more we are subjected to many age related problems. One of the most devastating (and very common) is loss of vision from macular degeneration. I know many elderly people who are suffering from this, so I think we all need to do what we can now to prevent it. Below is a link that explains what it is and how it is affected by diet, sun rays and certain prescription medications. Pay attention to the health tip below on how to reduce your exposure to UV rays. Click here.
More than just dueling pianos, Howl at The Moon Experience is a high-energy music show like no other. Sing, dance, and, yes, even howl as the most versatile and talented musicians perform favorite songs from 80's rock, 90's pop, and today's dance hits on dueling pianos. These highly energetic and entertaining shows make for a fun-filled and memorable night!

Every show is different because there is no set agenda or playlist as the audience helps select the songs to create the unique music party experience. These talented musicians can perform just about any song requested.  Starting next weekend, June 24th and 25th, Howl at The Moon Experience will alternate with Comedy Zone Experiences to showcase professional entertainment EVERY weekend, ALL Summer long! And, similar to Comedy Zone Experiences, FREE live music featuring local bands will play the 'Live In The Loop Outdoor Stage' prior to each Howl at The Moon performance. Food will also be available for purchase.
Come enjoy the Howl at The Moon Experience on the following dates:

 DECORATE DAD A SPECIAL CAKE!
Bake Dad his favorite cake and decorate it like his favorite sport or hobby. If you're short on time, you can get a plain iced cake from the bakery and decorate it yourself. The chocolate cake pictured is great for a golfer. You can make 'grass' with tinted coconut and leave an un-iced circle for the 'hole'. Or how about matchbox cars on a track for a Nascar fan, - or a fishing line tied to a wooden skewer 'hooked' to a 'Goldfish' cracker atop blue icing. Check the scrapbook section at the craft store for decorations, - just warn Dad that they're not edible!

Click here to check out and learn creative skills in just 15 minutes a day with bite-sized lessons you can fit in practically any time. This is a great site that allows you to take classes offline with your phone or tablet - on a plane, the subway, the park - wherever your creativity takes you.

How do I protect myself from UV rays?
People who get a lot of exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays are at greater risk for skin cancer. Sunlight is the main source of UV rays, but you don't have to avoid the sun completely. And it would be unwise to stay inside if it would keep you from being active, because physical activity is important for good health. But getting too much sun can be harmful. There are some steps you can take to limit your exposure to UV rays.
  • Seek shade
  • Protect your skin with clothing
  • Use sunscreen - read the labels
  • Wear a hat
  • Wear sunglasses that block UV rays
  • Avoid tanning beds and sun lamps

CRAFT IDEA OF THE WEEK
.
Though this isn't really a 'craft' the preppy gal inside of me loves a monogram and can figure out a way to turn it into a craft. You can use these stickers to embellish not only envelopes, but notebooks, boxes, computer cases, mirrors and more. You could even double side it with your contact info, laminate it and create a luggage just in time for summer travels.

With so many of us managing our lives online, I know it is difficult to keep track of all of the passwords that are required. Here are two programs that can help us safely store our passwords for free. My hope is that one of these two programs will help simplify your online life!  Click here to check them out. DID YOU KNOW THIS?
There is an entire subterranean world under Seattle, Washington? This came about after the 1889 fire, which prompted a rebuilding project that elevated Seattle's city streets approximately 12 feet higher than before. The city was then rebuilt on top of the old ruins, which are still open for tours today. I think you'll enjoy this 4 minute tour of the area from the History Channel. Click here.
TODAY'S CHUCKLE
While having their evening dinner together, a little girl looked up at her father and asked, "Daddy, you're the boss in our family, right?"The father was very pleased to hear it and confidently replied, "Yes, my little princess." The girl then continued, "That's because mommy put you in charge, right?"
FLASH TIP OF THE WEEK

Monday will be 'Summer Solstice' which is the longest day in the year, meaning even more daylight than our usual Daylight Savings Time provides. (If your little ones refuse to go to bed until dark, well - good luck with that!) The Solstice also marks the official first day of summer and it doesn't end until the Autumnal Equinox on September 22, 2016.  So, it will indeed be a 'long, hot summer'!  When you grow up in Florida like I did, you learn to cope.  Here are some suggestions: Wading pools aren't just for babies. They're cool for adults to recline in too or set your chair up next to it so your feet can dance in the water. Keep grapes, berries, bananas and watermelon cubes or wedges in the freezer for a healthy, cool snack. (For kids, cut off the rind and stick in a popsicle stick before freezing for a special treat.) Invest in ceiling fans. They're great and also help to lower your power bills. To cool down super fast, apply ice packs or cold compresses to pulse points at the wrists, neck, elbows, groin, ankles, and behind the knees. When all else fails head inside to air condition. Movies are great info entertainment and kudos to the Majestic theater for offering free movies for the kids every day at 10 AM! For their schedule, Click here.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK
Lobster Corn Chowder
from keyingredient

This is a tasty recipe that is perfect to include in your menu this time of year because of delicious fresh corn and lobster. Dad's will love it too! :)

Ingredients:
3 - 1-1/2 poud cooked lobsters
3 - ears of corn
6 - Tablespoons unsalted butter, 3/4 of a stick
1- cup yellow onion, chopped
1/4 - cup cream sherry
1 - teaspoon sweet paprika
4 - cups whole milk
2 - cups heavy cream
1 - cup dry white wine
1 - Tablespoon good olive oil
1/4 - pound bacon, large dices
2 - cups large unpeeled Yukon gold potatoes, diced
1-1/2 - cups yellow onions, chopped a
2 - cups celery disced
1 - Tablespoon salt
1 - teaspoon freshly ground pepper
2 - teaspoons fresh chopped chives
1/4 - cup cream sherry

Directions
Remove the meat from the shells of the lobsters. Cut the meat into large cubes and place them in a bowl. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate. Reserve the shells and all the juices that collect. Cut the corn kernels from the cobs and set aside, reserving the cobs separately. For the stock, melt the butter in a stockpot or Dutch oven large enough to hold all the lobster shells and corncobs. Add the onion and cook over medium-low heat for 7 minutes, until translucent but not browned, stirring occasionally. Add the sherry and paprika and cook for 1 minute. Add the milk, cream, wine, lobster shells and their juices, and corncobs and bring to a simmer. Partially cover the pot and simmer the stock over the lowest heat for 30 minutes. (I move the pot halfway off the heat.) Meanwhile, in another stockpot or Dutch oven, heat the oil and cook the bacon for 4 to 5 minutes over medium-low heat, until browned and crisp. Remove with a slotted spoon and reserve. Add the potatoes, onions, celery, corn kernels, salt, and pepper to the same pot and sauté for 5 minutes. When the stock is ready, remove the largest pieces of lobster shell and the corncobs with tongs and discard. Place a strainer over the soup pot and carefully pour the stock into the pot with the potatoes and corn. Simmer over low heat for 15 minutes, until the potatoes are tender. Add the cooked lobster, the chives and the sherry and season to taste. Heat gently and serve hot with a garnish of crisp bacon.

The Arc thanks the Replogle family for The 34th Annual "Ocean Grill Night"

Thanks to the Replogle family The Arc has received $166,000 since Jake started the Ocean Grill night in 1982.  At the conclusion of the 34th annual Ocean Grill night last May, Mary Ellen Replogle said "Every year it gets bigger!  It's great to see how many people turn out for this great cause. I feel bad that we had to turn people away because we were full.  If we had the seating, I'm sure we would have raised at least another $500!"  The proceeds from this evening go to The Arc for its much needed programs. In Indian River County alone, more than 2,000 families are impacted by special needs such as Down's syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism, and other developmental and traumatic brain disabilities.

For more information about The Arc and its programs, call Executive Director Charles Bradley at 772.562.6854, ext 235.  The Arc is a United Way partner agency.
