HAPPY THURSDAY FLASHERS!

Things have been fun, exciting and a bit exhausting around here lately! I have some rip-roaring news! FLASH is expanding into Martin County! Jeff Strahl is taking on that territory and will be building FLASH through the printed calendar and APP.  He will officially launch in August! So, FLASHERS ... So FLASH, let's show hime some FLASH love! if you have friends to the south of us please tell them to keep their eye out for FLASH. I would greatly appreciate you encouraging them to submit events to the calendar as well as explore the advertising opportunities. You can reach Jeff through email or by calling (561) 329-7899.

I can't tell you how much I have enjoyed building FLASH these last 5 years and how thrilled I am with this expansion. You have no idea how much many of your friendships mean to me! You welcomed me, encouraged me, showered me with your suggestions, provided feedback, and I can only hope that the same will be true for Jeff!  He is exactly they type of person with great integrity and commitment to 'community' that I have been looking for and FLASH is so lucky to be able to welcome him to the FLASH family! I have been looking for the perfect fit for about a year and I have found it in Jeff! WELCOME, JEFF! :)

Thank you~

STAY ON TOP OF RECALLS
.
The death this week of  Star Trek actor, Anton Yelchin, reminds us to take recalls seriously. It would be a good idea if we all checked the list of recalls on a regular basis. Yeltsin died after he was struck and pinned by his car in his own driveway in Los Angeles. Yelchin's SUV was being recalled because the gear shifts have confused drivers, causing the vehicles to roll away unexpectedly.

Some fun traditions you never outgrow. :)

WEEKEND CRAFT FOR THE 4TH

This is a simple craft that you can do in time for the 4th of July.  These twine stars can hang as a door wreath, from trees, along your porch, anywhere that needs a bit of good ole USA pride display! Though the natural look is totally 'IN", you can opt to spray your stars red, white and blue. Get busy and display some patriotic allegiance!

Water Safety Part 1 of 2

Swimming is a great recreational sport that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. But it's important to know how to be safe while you're in the water. Below are important swimming safety tips you should be aware of before you head out to the pool or beach:

  • Swim in designated areas supervised by lifeguards.
  • Always swim with a buddy; do not allow anyone to swim alone.
  • Never leave a young child unattended near water and do not trust a child's life to another child; teach children to always ask permission to go near water.
  • Have young children or inexperienced swimmers wear life jackets around water, but do not rely on life jackets alone.
  • Maintain constant supervision.
  • Make sure everyone in your family learns to swim well.
  • If you have a pool, secure it with appropriate barriers. Many children who drown in home pools were out of sight for less than five minutes and in the care of one or both parents at the time.

DID YOU KNOW THIS?
WHY DO THEY CALL THEM 'BUFFALO WINGS?'
Since buffaloes don't have wings, it should be obvious, but I hadn't known. They originated in Buffalo, NY at the Anchor Bar. In the 1960s, then-owner Teressa Bellissimo is credited with the creation of the dish when she deep-fried some wings and covered them in hot sauce and butter to serve her son and some of his hungry friends. Chicken wings were previously used for soup or simply thrown away. She served them with blue cheese dip as hors d'oeuvres at the bar. They were initially offered for free. How they became so widely known is anyone's guess.

THE FLOATING PIERS
in Italy

Anyone traveling to Italy?  You might want to plan a trip to Italy's Lake Iseo where artist Christo and Jeanne-Claude have created a floating pier that connects a tripod of islands. The floating pier opened on June 18 and will be available for touring 24 hours a day until July 3rd. It is free and open to the public, but weather will dictate access as high winds and bad weather will cause it to close to visitors.

Visitors can experience this work of art by walking on it from Sulzano to Monte Isola and to the island of San Paolo, which is framed by The Floating Piers. Come 'walk on water'. Lake Iseo is located 100 kilometers east of Milan and 200 kilometers west of Venice. Wish I was going to Italy! :)

RECIPE OF THE WEEK

EASY CLOUD BREAD
I haven't tried this, but I can't wait. I saw the recipe online and it received rave reviews!
Recipe by:The Wicked Noodle
They say Cloud Bread is soft and fluffy - like a cloud! It's a great substitute for 'regular' bread and is low in carbs. It doesn't slice well, but you can use 2 'buns' to make a sandwich. You can use Splenda instead of sugar or leave it out altogether, or season with garlic salt. It's good toasted, too.

Ingredients
3 large eggs, separated
1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
2 ounces cream cheese, very soft
(or whip with a mixer before using)
1 tablespoon white sugar

Directions
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Beat egg whites and cream of tartar together in a bowl until stiff peaks form.
  3. Mix egg yolks, cream cheese, and sugar together in a separate bowl using a wooden spoon and then mixing with a hand-held egg beater until mixture is very smooth and has no visible cream cheese. Gently fold egg whites into cream cheese mixture, taking care not to deflate the egg whites.
  4. Carefully scoop mixture onto the prepared baking sheet, forming 5 to 6 "buns".
  5. Bake in the preheated oven until cloud bread is lightly browned, about 30 minutes.

'SCENE AROUND TOWN'

Main Street Vero Beach was given $1400 on Wed June 22 for the Design Project Baskets to Banners/Adopt a Pot, by Sunrise Rotary Vero Beach. The club adopted two new pots to go on either side of the Rotary fountain that is located on 14th Ave at 21st in downtown Vero Beach and continues their sponsorship of  eight other hanging baskets along the street. This is the 3rd year for Sunrise to assist Main Street in this beautification project.

Accepting the check  was Elaine Jones, Executive Director of Main Street Vero Beach, Eric Hessler, Rotarian and Immediate Past President of MSVB and Robin Pelensky, Rotarian and Chair of the Design Project.

Camp Haven is pleased to announce the addition of James Kerns as a Member of the Board of Directors.

Kerns and his wife Madeleine have been married for 45 years, living most of that time in New Jersey where he pursued a career in Information Technology. The couple relocated to Vero Beach 12 years ago and immersed themselves in charitable activities in the community and through their parish, Holy Cross Catholic Church.

Kern's selfless giving hasn't gone unnoticed in the community. He was honored for his devotion to helping others with the Unsung Hero award as part of National Philanthropy Day in 2013.

"We are blessed to have Jim Kerns as our newest Board member. He embodies the spirit of community service and collaboration. His volunteer expertise, community contacts, talent, energy and proven leadership skills couldn't come at a better time," stated Lalita Janke, Board President.

Camp Haven is an Indian River County transitional home that provides supportive living opportunities and education to men committed to rising out of homelessness. By implementing a thoughtful intake procedure, and strict adherence to guidelines, residents in the program receive educational opportunities, counseling, and encouragement, as they move from homelessness to hopefulness, eventually becoming active, engaged, contributing members of the community.

Indian River Medical Center adds Pet Therapy Program

Indian River Medical Center (IRMC) has implemented a Pet Therapy Program at the Scully-Welsh Cancer Center, understanding that sometimes a furry friend can offer the best medicine for the psyche. This is just one way IRMC focuses on a patient's mind, body and spirit.

"Patients and their caregivers are comforted by animal-assisted therapy. After a visit by one of our pet therapy dogs, patients visibly show improved mood and energy levels," said Lori McCormick, Director of Oncology Services. "They often say how they look forward to the dog's next visit.
