editor's note poka-dot

HAPPY THURSDAY, FLASHERS!
Someone, somewhere once said, "I don't know much about art, but I know what I like." Nobody knows for sure, but the quote may have come from the late Will Rogers. The widely popular humorist of the 1920s and '30s was known for his folksy wit and wisdom and it sounds like something he would say.

The quote reminds me of my own taste in art and my favorite artist, Norman Rockwell. Rockwell died in 1978 never  knowing the success of his works today. He received no critical acclaim during his lifetime and was hurt by critics who saw him as a lowly calendar artist and magazine illustrator (because of the covers he did for The Saturday Evening Post), and not worthy of recognition in the art world. One article in the Washington Post said his work depicting life in mid-20th-century America was "an unending cliche." In spite of comments like that, some people 'knew what they liked' and in 1995, almost 20 years after Rockwell's death, his "AFTER THE PROM" sold for $880,000. A lot of money for the 90's but peanuts compared to the value of his work today. In 2014 that same painting sold for $9.1 million at Sotheby's auction! Christie's auction house sold his baseball painting "THE ROOKIE" for $22.5 million, and his "SAYING GRACE" set a record of $42 million!
The surge in the price of Rockwell paintings dates to at least 2001, when the Guggenheim Museum mounted a major display of Rockwell's work. Coming just after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, the show apparently touched a nerve with the American public who had come together with a show of patriotism, - a familiar theme of Rockwell's art which frequently depicted traditional American values. Although some critics trashed the exhibit, the show set an attendance record.

Along with being a fan of Rockwell's, I'm writing this to remind you "to know what you like"and not be afraid to express it.
Recently I saw a movie that has already received awards and I think it was probably the trashiest film I have ever seen. So, w
hether it's movies or art or music, or even political candidates,  I urge you to not
let critics sway your opinion or your values.

Rockwell's paintings are like a pictorial history of the 20th century. For a quick view of his works in chronological order, Click here

unclaimed property FIND UNCLAIMED FUNDS
Maybe you didn't win the big lottery a couple of weeks ago, but all is not lost. You might have some money out there that can't find you. Often utility deposits and other monies get lost when we move. There are a few sites that can help you discover if you have some money waiting to be claimed. Missingmoney.com, is a data base of many state treasuries and unclaimed.org is another site that has a multiple state treasury data base. Or you can go to the Florida state treasury directly. These searches are free and are fairly easy. When searching, it is suggested that you use your name including your middle initial. Ladies...Try your maiden name as well.  Good luck!! :)

Chief Washington Correspondent for the National Law Journal, Marcia Coyle is both a lawyer and a journalist who, for a quarter century, has focused her work on the U.S. Supreme Court. Her reporting has garnered national journalism awards, such as the American Judicature Society's Toni House Journalism Award for a career body of work involving coverage of the nation's courts and justice system, and the Scripps Howard Foundation Award for environmental journalism, among others.

Coyle has covered the U.S. Supreme Court and a wide variety of national legal issues since joining The National Law Journal, in 1987. Coyle also appears as a regular analyst of Supreme Court news for PBS' The NewsHour. Before becoming a legal reporter, Coyle covered state government and politics for The Allentown Call-Chronicle Newspapers as its state capital correspondent in Harrisburg, Pa., and later became its first Washington bureau chief.

Her highly regarded book, The Roberts Court: The Struggle for the Constitution, shows how four landmark decisions reveal fault lines in the Court led by Chief Justice John Roberts Jr. - the court that now sits at the center of a constitutional maelstrom.

WEEKEND PROJECT
Sliding Barn Doors

Barn doors are making a huge entrance into the world of design. They bring a rustic and comfortable bit of charm to a home and can warm up any room almost instantaneously. It is also a logical addition in that it saves space compared to the more common swinging door. You can install doors within a couple of hours and can pick up sliding hardware at hardware stores, Lowes, or Home Depot. I love this idea in a kitchen to close off a storage pantry or closet.  Click Here to see numerous ways you might incorporate this into your personal design and the different hardware options available.

HAPPY 50th ANNIVERSARY SUPER BOWL!
Super Bowl 50 will celebrate its 'golden anniversary' on Sunday, February 7, 2016 at 6:30 pm Eastern Time in the City of Santa Clara, CA at the state-of-the-art Levi'sŪ Stadium, which is the greenest and most technologically advanced professional football stadium in the United States. In a departure from the NFL tradition of using Roman numerals, this game is marketed in Arabic numerals as Super Bowl 50 instead of Super Bowl L (the Roman numeral for 50). I'm glad they've changed it. I had to learn those Roman Numerals in school, but I have to admit...It kinda left me confused. Besides, "Super Bowl L" isn't the most attractive title for marketing and could be even more confusing.
The NFL has already said that the tradition of using Roman numerals will be reinstated in 2017. I guess we have a short reprieve and then it's back to studying those Roman Numerals!
