HAPPY THURSDAY, FLASHERS!
You'll have to pardon me because I'm going to step up on my soapbox this week. Did you watch the Golden Globes last Sunday? Apparently some of the language used was so bad that the frequent 'bleeps' had people thinking that something was wrong with the audio. Equally shocking were the fashion chosen by some of the women that went more than just a little too far. You will see in post below that this trend has been around for some time. It seems that some of the lesser-known stars seem to use these award shows to draw attention to themselves by wearing shocking outfits. Then once they establish their fame, they begin to dress more modestly. If you remember some of Lady Gaga's wacky outfits in the past, you were probably as surprised as I was to see how absolutely gorgeous and elegant she looked in the simple but beautiful black gown she wore last Sunday. It seems that "Freedom of Speech" has been stretched so far that it now includes foul language, pornography and nudity in fashion. There's not much we can do about it except point out the 'good guys (and gals)' to our children. I don't recall 'good guy' Tom Hanks using bad language in his movies and former winners Julia Roberts and Sandra Bullock have always looked elegant when they have accepted their awards. So lets spread the word that you don't have to get attention by adopting some outrageous style or poor behavior. In all that we do...I think a 'bit of class' can take us all a long, long way! Stay classy FLASHERS!
Changing the subject, I'm back in Georgia this week to celebrate my eldest daughter's birthday and, as you will see in this issue, I'll be missing a lot of the fun back at home! I hope you will support the events coming up and if you snap a picture...send it my way and find yourself in our 'Scene Around Town' section next week!

The series launches on January 16 with two distinguished Americans who survived an unthinkable ordeal. REVEALING 'RED CARPET' FASHIONS IN THE PAST
I don't think I'm a prude, but whoever said that "less is more" was wrong because many of the celebrities at last Sunday's Golden Globes should have worn "more." I just think it is 'classless' instead of 'classy' and I hate the message it sends to the young viewers who idolize these stars! I decided to look back at some of the awards shows of the past, but I was even more shocked by what I found in this slideshow from TVGuide and I think you will be, too. Jennifer Lopez, Katy Perry, Cher and even Barbra Streisand were guilty of some pretty poor choices in years past.

WHAT THE CONSTITUTION STATES ABOUT ELIGIBILITY TO BE PRESIDENT.
By now you have probably heard about the controversy over whether or not Ted Cruz meets the criteria to be President. The problem stems from the fact that he was born in Calgary, Canada to an American mother and a Canadian father. Because his Mother was an American, he is an American citizen but...
"No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty-five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States."
Eight of the first nine presidents, (Martin Van Buren being the exception) were born as British subjects in the British colonies before the American Revolution, but they were eligible for the office by virtue of having been citizens at the time that the Constitution was adopted.
Amendment 12 declared the same criteria for Vice-President: "No person constitutionally ineligible to the office of President shall be eligible to that of Vice-President of the United States." But Amendment 14 adds to the confusion because it does not use the phrase natural-born citizen. It does provide, "All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside."
Are you confused? So am I!

TODAY'S CHUCKLE
Two brothers ages 8 and 10 were always getting into trouble. The boys' mother heard that a clergyman in town had been successful in disciplining children, so she asked if he would speak with her boys. He agreed and asked to see them individually.
So, in the morning, the mother sent her 8-year-old first, with the older boy to see the pastor in the afternoon.
The preacher, a huge man with a booming voice, sat the younger boy down and asked him sternly, "Where is God?"
They boy's mouth dropped open, but he made no response because he was so frightened.
The clergyman repeated the question. "Where is God?"
Again, the boy made no attempt to answer.
So, he raised his voice some more and shook his finger in the boy's face and bellowed, "Where is God!?"
The boy screamed and bolted from the room. He ran directly home and slammed the door behind him.
When his older brother saw him, he asked, "What happened?"
The younger brother, gasping for breath, replied: "We are in real BIG trouble this time! God is missing, and they think we did it!"

Thumbs Up For
Military Moms Prayer Group
'Holidays for Heroes' Gift Packages!
U.S. soldier in Afghanistan give thumbs up to gifts from Indian River County. According to one report, the men came running when the packages arrived. Since 2006, an estimated 16,000 packages have been sent to US troops deployed to hotspots around the world through the military moms prayer group holiday outreach Drive.
Here is an excerpt from a letter received from a Captain in Afghanistan:
"There were times I was overcome with all the love and compassion contained in the letters and packages that have arrived throughout the past few months. While the tempo is pretty high here, I made time to read each note...Even now, I write this note with extreme gratitude of all the time and effort that all of you put into supporting us during our time deployed."

 We were saddened to hear that Ron Van Sweringen passed away shortly after New Years day. Ron was a catalyst for the resurrection of the Downtown Arts District both as an artist and as an investor. He owned Gallery RVS on the corner of 14th Avenue and 19th Street which in turn became Lighthouse Art and Framing and now is Threads. He also owned the properties where the Patisserie, the Kilted Mermaid and the Antiques Mall are located and he was committed to bringing arts related businesses to Downtown Vero. He was a internationally collected artist in his own right and his shows at Lighthouse Art and Framing were groundbreaking, especially his controversial show inspired by the Ferguson riots. Always outspoken, always interesting, Ron will be sorely missed by the Vero Beach Arts community.
Ron will be interned near his ancestral home in northern Virginia. No details have been given by the family as yet to funeral arrangements.

CALLING ALL ARTISTS
Art By The Sea is a Prestigious Exhibition by Members of the Vero Beach Art Club and the Vero Beach Museum of Art and is being held Jan 22-24. It is held in the beautiful Holmes Great Hall at the Vero Beach Museum of Art, this show offers artists a chance to show one piece each of their artwork, all available for sale. A percentage is donated to the Vero Beach Art Club to support their educational outreach programs such as the scholarships they award to high school seniors and the donations they give to Elementary Schools, Middle Schools and various art classes in Indian River County. Last season's show sold 23% of all the artwork on display at the show, it was an incredible success and the artwork was considered to be outstanding.

The rides will originate at South Beach Park - East of AlA at the end of East Causeway (17th Street Bridge). Multiple distance options will be offered ranging from around 12 miles (Round Island Park and back) to around 30 miles (Ft. Pierce Inlet and back). Riders will be separated into small group based on each rider's desired pace (speed). The slower groups will be "no drop" meaning that no one will be left behind no matter how slow they like to ride.
