Happy December, Flashers!
Can it really be the last month of 2015? And what a busy month it's going to be! You will quickly agree when you see all the fun that is in store this weekend alone! Oh my... You have choices to make, FLASHERS!
Our Jewish friends are going to be even busier. Their eight day Hanukah celebration begins this Sunday evening, and doesn't end until December 14th. They don't have much time left to buy gifts and to plan and cook the special meals. The Jewish holidays are filled with family focus and tradition. I enjoyed learning more about their traditional gifts that are given over those 8 days. Hallmark has a great gift suggestion list for the 8 nights which can easily feed into the idea of gift giving for Christmas. It begins with Night 1: Family Activity Night, then on to Night 2: Favorite Things Night, Night 3: Handmade Gift Night and you can click on the link in the post below to discover the remaining themed nights. I think each one, with its varied focus, has the ability to develop different character 'building blocks' that instill the importance of family, friends, community, laughter and love!
Those are traits that are certainly shared; regardless of whether you celebrate Christmas or Hanukah. December is certainly the season for such wonderful things! I hope the lessons of the eight days of Hanukah serve as something that each FLASHER can take to heart. What a tremendous world it would be if we all focused on such things as family, bringing laughter to others, giving from the heart and not the bank, helping others, etc. It's a shame we concentrate all of those wonderful things into one seasonal holiday a year! But... How wonderful that we focus on it at all! Just do it FLASHERS and enjoy the miracle of the season! Happy December! :)
Thank you~

HANUKKAH
In less than a week, Hannukkah, the Festival of Lights will begin, celebrating when the Jews reclaimed the Holy Temple in Jerusalem from the Greeks and rededicated it to the service of God, and how a single cruse of oil to light the Temple's menorah for one night, lasted eight whole nights. This holiday celebrates the triumph of light over darkness, purity over adulteration, spirituality over materiality, and in the modern years, it has become a tradition for American Jews to give gifts on the eight days of Hanukkah. Hallmark has an interesting suggestion to make the gift giving even more special by giving each night a different theme. To read more about the themes, Click here.

This month we will feature a FLASH Christmas Song of the week.
Nothing can set the mood like music. It is there to console us, inspire us, entertain us, energize us etc. This is the season of carols and Christmas songs will be spilling through the air for the next 3 weeks and I will be singing along to each one. I remember our home ALWAYS being filled with music. My father acquired and loved his music library of albums, tapes and CD's and I guess he passed that love of music on to me. This week's song is by Kenny Loggins. and is one that he would have played a bit too loud to where you would feel the vibration in the room... much to my mother's dismay. Listen for the piano solo in the background! He would have loved that and is part of the song I enjoy the most! If you are like me you will want to jump in the car, turn up the music and head to family! :) Enjoy FLASHERS!
Click Here and have it play through in the background

FINANCIAL TIP
CHARITY RANKINGS
This is the time of year when we are inundated with donation requests from various non-profit organizations. Making annual donations all at the same time is a good idea, and it makes it easier to keep track of them for tax purposes. However, you may be surprised at how some of the charities spend your donations. I was disappointed to learn that several of the charities are on the 'naughty' list when a large percentage of the funds they receive (some over 40%!) are spent on operating costs rather than the program itself. Before you write that check, you might want to visit a website called Charity Navigator. You can put in the name of a charity and it will give you a rating of up to 4 stars, then click on "details" and scroll down to get the percentage allocations. To try it, Click here.

 WEEKEND PROJECT
I love this lighted garland and can think of some fun ways to use it so that it would spread some holiday cheer to those whose eyes catch a glimpse. Test your burlap to make sure the dye will not run when wet. I think it would look great draped over your front door. I think it would also look great on your Christmas tree and could even make a great display for Christmas cards if you tie some plain satin strips of ribbon from the garland to stick your cards to. What a fun and inexpensive way to transform a stand of lights. Click Here for directions

NEW BUSINESS FEATURE
If you: have a pet, love your pet, enjoy helping others, and don't like paying the very top dollar for services...yet want to receive incredible quality care...Then you are going to love Dr. John Clark and his new clinic; Community Veterinary Clinic (CVC)! The
Community Veterinary Clinic will practice
Community Based and Conservation Minded Medicine. What does that mean? It means
the clinic will not only have the mission of offering quality and affordable preventive care but a dual focus to raise awareness and funding for conservation projects in Indian River County and abroad.
When envisioning CVC John and his wife, Rachel,
wanted to create a clinic that was different from all others. They wanted to offer high quality care and advice to the community while incorporating their passion for wildlife. Their mission really is to promote animal welfare within IRC and beyond.
A portion of every veterinary service bill will be donated to each client's choice of one of three conservation projects they have identified: the Environmental Learning Center in IRC, The South Luangwa Conservation Society and Chipembele Education Trust in Zambia, Africa and Ocean Spirits in Grenada, West Indies. The conservation projects are an integral part of the Clinic and are represented physically in the clinic through the three 'themed' exam rooms. At the end of each month the clinic will make a donation to each charity that reflects the desires of its clients.
The clinic will work closely with local shelters such as Rescue Adoption and Halo to spay and neuter their animals at a discounted rate, and they'll pass along the savings to adoptive parents by offering free establishment exams to animals who have been adopted within three months of their appointment.

DID YOU KNOW?
THE JAPANESE ARE OBSESSED WITH KFC
Since only one percent of the Japanese population is estimated to be Christian, Christmas isn't a national holiday in Japan, but a bucket of "Christmas Chicken" has become a popular tradition anyway. According to the Smithsonian Magazine, it's all thanks to the insanely successful "Kurisumasu ni wa kentakkii!" ("Kentucky for Christmas!") marketing campaign in 1974. You can't find turkey in Japan, so KFC saw this as a prime commercial opportunity to offer the next best thing and launched its first Christmas meal that year: Chicken and wine for 2,920 yen($10)-pretty pricey for the seventies. Today the Christmas chicken dinner, which now includes cake and champagne, goes for about 3,336 yen ($40). Click here for full story.

TODAY'S CHUCKLE
Martha went to the Post Office and asked the clerk for 100 stamps for her Christmas cards. ' What denomination?' asked the clerk. 'Oh! Good heavens! Have we come to this?' said Martha, 'Well give me 50 Methodist, 30 Catholic and just mix up the rest.'
